As I type this it is 3:20 am on a Monday night and I have to get up for school in about 4 hours or so. For the last month or so I have been having frequent late nights because I just can't seem to sleep no matter what I do. So i'll pass it on to the Petelings - what do you do to help yourself get to sleep? |

Exercise tends to help. It tires you out and I end up collapsing on he bed afterwards. Go for a run outside or do just do some push/sit ups indoors. |

If you're feeling brave, you could do an all nighter to tire yourself out for the next day. As in, stay up all night, don't sleep, go to school, and try and sleep at a normal time the night after. But that seems a bit risky... It can be done to get your sleeping pattern back in check. I remember having really bad sleeping pattern during the summer, I always tried to get it in order when I was at school though, and now I'm at uni and usually have early starts, I go to sleep quite early. Other things you could maybe do; read a book and try to get tired, drink some milky drinks like hot chocolate (cocoa for the Americans), have a bath (I dunno, I think they are relaxing, but not for everyone..) Some people watch films/TV to fall asleep, but I can't fall asleep with a movie unless I'm really tired. Hopefully that helps! Having been to school, college and three seperate university degrees, I know how difficult early mornings can be! XD |

Try not to think too hard that you have to sleep, all it does is frustrate you when you can't and makes it even harder to fall asleep < My best piece of advice! Warm milk has helped me a few times, a couple of years ago I suffered from a period of semi-insomnia, I couldn't sleep even when I was really tired, then I tried drinking some warm milk and it knocked me out a couple of times. Another trick that worked for me was to read a book when I was in bed, no matter how exciting the book was it completely wore me out to read. Just never, never drink alcohol or use sleeping drugs. Alcohol gives you very uncomfortable REM sleep, and sometimes you can wake up feeling more tired than when you went to bed. Sleeping medication should ONLY be taken if you can't possibly fall to sleep any other way, simply because sleep medication is addictive and can make it nearly impossible to sleep without it. Continue what you are doing. Eventually you will crash, and sleep for about 14 hours. |

They're processed and combined with other chemicals though. Personally I've been listening to Slacker radio on a low level with the sleep timer on (using my phone). Seems to have helped a bit, I've never been a fan of sleep though. |

I have horrible sleep problems from time to time, and the conventional methods of dealing with it (warm milk, hot bath, etc) almost never help. For me, the only solution is to just keep getting up at the same time every day and eventually my body clock falls back into place and I sleep soundly. The more I try to fight insomnia, the more frustrated I get, so I accept it as a temporary thing and try to let it pass naturally. What I find does help on occasion is to listen to something as you close your eyes. I listen to a lot of podcasts, and I often fall asleep to them. The voices are comforting and downbeat, so it's more relaxing than music which can from from quiet to loud. Edited by browland1, Apr 23 2012, 05:14 PM.

I generally let the TV on, or have sounds running while I'm attempting to sleep. The main problem I have is that I tend to think, and me thinking prevents me from dosing off, so I try to get something that will prevent me from thinking while I am lying in bed. Also, another solution is to get up earlier on the weekends and not sleep until 1 PM. I tend to have this habit, so I'll always attempt to set my alarm clocks to wake me up earlier. Perhaps 8:30 AM, 9? People think I'm funny for have three different alarm clocks, but I'm against sleeping in into the afternoon. |

Oh yeah, try to sleep on a consistent schedule too. I dream too much because of my lack of consistency, and so I don't get the best sleep. Or sometimes I wont really fall asleep, so my mind is really awake while I'm unconscious.. It's the most frustrating thing. |

Take advantage of the male refractory period by having sex/jerking off just before bed. |

i actually have a take on counting sheep that works extremely well for me. Counting sheep just takes your mind off of "trying" to sleep and so eventually you relax and off you go, but counting sheep isn't very enjoyable for most people. So on to my tip, pick a task (hobby, big upcoming plans, football game you'll be playing in....) and play out the details of it in your head. Be sure not to think of specifics or in depth planning or you'll end up staying awake actually planning the task, restrict yourself to the more mundane portions of the event arriving at the airport, packing your bags, setting up a new system getting ready to play...and stick to one situation, if you are bouncing from one event to another you'll just be thinking too much and you'll keep yourself up bouncing from one thing to another. personally I just bought a car so if I'm having trouble sleeping i think about getting in my new car playing with the buttons, stereo and whatever random shit I can think of, driving around.....very generic but enjoyable to me stuff. Anyway give this an honest try, clear your head of all the school work, actual work, gf drama.... and think about something along the line of what I described and I assure you, you'll fall asleep significantly faster.

I really can't understand how people don't get sleepy and/or tired at the end of the day. Come midnight I am both physically and mentally exhauseted and cannot help but crash. I feel if you do enough during the day it will register you getting tired at the end of it. |

That won't work for everybody, last year we had a really busy week at my job so I worked 20hrs/day for about 5 days in a row, at the end of the day I was literally a fuckin' zombie and still couldn't sleep. As browland was saying, a sleeping schedule is the best way around it, worked great for me. Edited by Bomboulder, May 1 2012, 12:59 AM.

Warm milk and a nice ambience always works for me. Also, it may sound crazy, but I but my clock ahead in my room by about an hour or two and set the alarm you use to wake up with (phone, etc) at the normal time, believe it or not, my head believes that the clock on the wall is the actual time! |

I get trouble sleeping every now and then. The different solutions that work for me include taking a hot shower before going to bed, sleeping on the floor, changing my position in the bed, or by simply freeing my mind and counting endlessly until i pass out. |

I have frequent bouts of insomnia, have done since my mid-teens and feel like maybe it will always pop up for me. Things I find helpful are taking a bath before bed, reading in bed, making sure I don't eat after 8/9pm (I've read up a lot on insomnia in order to combat it and I read that your body digesting food can actually keep you awake) and putting on a comfort dvd in the background, so a movie or TV show I'm familiar with and find relaxing and comforting. I also try not to stay in bed tossing and turning if I can't sleep because all that does it make me restless and more frustrated. If I can't sleep after around twenty minutes I'll get up, get a glass of water or milk, flick through a magazine or something like that and then go back to bed and try again. Another thing I do that works a lot is to lay in bed and do a sort of 'happy place' thing with my imagination. For example I'll think about my version of a perfect house that I'd love to have built, so in my mind I'll go through it room by room, building it as I go along and daydreaming about my perfect day in my perfect house. Sounds lame but I find it so relaxing. |

Oh and I wanna add that I'm the kind of person that can't sleep with total silence. So everytime I go to bed, I leave the All Gen Gamers podcast playing. True story. |

Like HBF, I also can't sleep in total silence. I need some kind of "white noise" to help relax me, so I have a fan that I keep running to provide some soothing ambient noise. The point is to create an environment where you can relax. The other thing I've heard people say is that you shouldn't do thinks like work or engage is stressful activities in your room, and that you should do these things is separate rooms. In short, your room should be the plaee you relax, not your command center. |
