Alternatives to credit cards; Are there any?

I went to the App Hub website so I can sign up for XNA and get started on making games for the XBox 360 but I'm stuck. Apparently to sign up for XNA, you need a credit card. Problem is I do not have one, I only have debit.

So I'm looking around for answers to this dilemma. I do not want a credit card because I will have no use for it other than this. So I'm hoping there is some kind of alternative I can use. Anyone know any substitute for a credit card I can use?

Drop XNA, and go with Unreal Engine, you can download it for free without any credit card. It's a much better engine, and there's easily just as many indie developers using it, which means that you can most likely find tutorials for beginners.

XNA is good, but Unreal is 10x better.

Unless they specifically mention that they don't accept debit cards, you should be able to use it like you would a normal credit card. Does your debit card have a visa or mastercard logo on it? If so, I bet it'll work.

1) Most debit cards can be run as credit
2) I believe pre paid visa gift cards can also be used as credit cards.
3) You should not shy away from a credit card just because you have no other use for one. Having one and using it wisely helps your credit score which later in life can help you get a car, house, and in some cases a job(ones that require certain background checks). Credit cards are not your enemy unless you use them very unwisely and make them your enemy.

@lol_pc: I would but I want to attempt to make some cash with my games. XBox Indie may not be the greatest but it's a lot more known than anything outside of it.

@Inazuma65: They specifically said no debit.

@eSkilliam: Yeah, I've been considering getting one if I can't find any alternatives, but I have no real use for a credit card at all. I prefer not to get one.

I don't personally have any credit cards (got into a bit of a pinch with them - long story) and therefore my only option is to either ask my girlfriend if I can use her's, which I rarely do, or I buy pre-paid Mastercard/Visa gift cards from the store. The only kicker is that many online retailers will not accept pre-paid cards because the address can't be verified, since none is attached to the card. Most offer a way to register your address to the card, effectively getting around this, but make sure this is an option before you buy it. The Vanilla Mastercard is the one I usually use and I've had no problems with it.

Most credit cards can be used as debit and vice versa I thought. When you go to some places they will often ask if you want to run it as debit or credit. If you say debit you will have to enter your pin number. Credit cards aren't bad to have, in fact, when I turned 18 I found a good one and got it. It helps you with responsibility and to build your credit score up not to mention gives you some money in case you really need it. Credit cards arent something to be feared, just don't get too many of them and don't go crazy charging stuff on them. In my opinion, you should keep one credit card to use in case of emergencies or to put gas in your car occasionally then pay off the balance in full.

Upon reading everything, I'm surprised most people on here DON'T use credit/debit cards. Unless of course they are too young to do so. I rarely carry much more than $20 on me at a time if that anymore. Everything I pay for including bills, I use my debit card. Be it food, dinner, movies, etc. Cash is too easy to spend for me and a card makes it easier for me to save. That and cards are so much easier. Checks are useless as well at this point. Unless you have to mail in a check or provide one in person which is the only time I write them.

I use my credit card whenever possible(I also pay it off immediately to not have to pay any interest). My particular card has reward points and I usually end up getting a free $250 gift card about 2 times a year. Having revolving credit can help out your credit score. It's important to build up good credit from an early point. It can make life much easier later on. As far as cash, the only time I usually have cash on me is when I'm preparing to order out Chinese with the guys at work. I hate putting all of their meals on my card and take their cash, so I pull some out for those times. As far as checks, I really wish they were useless, but I have at least 2 bills that I pretty much have to pay with check.

Good credit is important, so never let anyone tell you that getting credit is bad. You just have to watch how you use it. The only time credit is bad is for someone that has already proven they can't handle it.

This.

But remember, with great power comes great responsibility.

So, don't screw up your future with a giant TV or video games. NEVER live beyond your means. Credit cards are only bad when you turn them into villains.

The guys over at App Hub have not responded to my post on their forums about the situation so I got no choice but to get a card now. Though I don't know how to do that.

Where does one go to get a credit card?

Where does one go to get a credit card?
Choose a reliable bank or credit union. You can go with a local one, but my preference is to go with a national institution. Only get one that says Visa or Mastercard. Other cards are not as widely accepted regardless of what they say in their ads. If you already have a bank for a checking or savings account, you may check with that bank to apply for a card. (They already have your information so this may make things easier and you may be able to link it to your other accounts which can sometimes have added benefits.) If there is a local branch of the bank you select, simply walk in and ask a teller to help you apply for one. Avoid applying through the mail for a credit card since this is your first time. Perks you can look for are rewards programs or frequent flyer miles and other rewards for spending money on your card. I like having my credit card with my main bank because I can pay on it online whenever I want to. Only get one card. Do not apply for multiple cards. If you get rejected for one, then you may apply for another one elsewhere.

Things to note: You will not get a high credit limit when you first get a card and you don't want to(Credit limit is how much you can spend on the card). A low credit limit is good, especially at first because your card will stop working when you go over the limit, stopping you from getting in credit trouble. Also you will have a high interest rate starting out. This is because you have little or not credit built up and is absolutely normal. Just pay off your card every time you spend money on it and you will not be charged the monthly interest.

DO NOT: Use this new found credit to go out and buy a big ticket item like a game system or a TV. Something do is to never spend money on my credit card that I don't already have the money to pay off in the bank. (I am just now breaking that rule for one big ticket item and I've had my card for 14 years.)

When I turned 18 I got a credit card upon advice to help build credit. I recommend doing this but don't go crazy spending on it. I kind of got caught in that trap a bit. Late fees will eat you up too. And when you turn 18 you will get swamped with credit card offers. If nothing else open up a checking account at a bank you like which will give you access to a debit card which makes spending much easier than carrying around cash and change.

That seems very reasonable. I would recommend (to get the cards rewards if they exist and to build credit) to pay any bills you can on the card, then pay the card right back off. For example pay your cell phone bill with the card, then go to the bank or log into the banks site, and pay the card back to $0.

KBK brought up a good point. I'm assuming you live in the United States. Are you 18 years old or older? If not, then you cannot get a credit card.

I am 26. I don't have bills at all. My cellphone is paid with prepaid cards. Like I said, if I get this card, I will only get App Hub. The card will have no purpose other purpose since I get by just fine without one.

Though you seem real enthusiastic about credit cards.

26 and no credit cards? Hurry and start building your credit now, or else you will regret it when you want to buy a car, house, get a loan, etc.

It's not that i'm enthusiastic. It's just that later in life, if you want to buy a car or a house or any large purchase like that, unless you have cash on hand to buy it, then you need credit. The interest rate you get when you buy those items depend on how good your credit is. If you buy a $20,000 car it could mean the difference between you paying $3000 in interest or $10,000 in interest. If you ever want to buy anything big you owe it to yourself to build your credit as soon as possible and keep it as good as possible. It's not just credit cards. Other factors play in(like having and paying bills on time), but credit cards help. I would recommend you switch your phone bill over to your credit card also, and just use it like your pre-paid.

I just though about something else. You can actually get pre-paid credit cards. That may be the option for you to look into. You pay like $250(or whatever you want to) to the credit card to begin with and use it til it gets down to 0, then recharge it. Otherwise it is a normal credit card, and it helps you to build credit because it's in your name. People with really bad credit used to use them to get their credit back on track. Not many people use them anymore, but I bet they still exist. Check into those.

Also, going back to the original question, you can always make you XNA games for windows to get them working (even with a wired xbox controller) and then port them over to 360 after they are mostly done. It should be almost identical code.
