Extra Credits is a series on Penny Arcade TV, these guys share industry information to gamers. The videos are always entertaining and informative. This particular video addresses the issue of harassment in the gaming community. Anyone that games online should take a few minutes to watch this video. http://penny-arcade.com/patv/episode/harassment |

I love Penny Arcade but I think I'll skip this one. I have no idea what it's about but if it's as it seems it's another commentary on how mean and rude and hurtful people are online. Grow a pair people. (I could be wrong, and that's ok with me.) Edited by SCScanlan, Apr 25 2012, 11:05 PM.

Grow a pair? Really? Do you walk up to people in public and say awful filth to their faces without repercussion? Just because you're anonymous online you condone the behavior? Thanks for taking time to discuss a video you didn't care to watch. Derp. |

If we already have the option to mute players who harass us, what is the problem exactly? I know that there are tons of ignorant fuckers on these games, but I don't like the idea of any kind of censorship, even just a little bit. Look at Nintendo's online games. You can't communicate at all. That sucks. Implementing any of the ideas from the video would only make things worse. We should treasure what freedom we have, instead of complaining about it and demanding more restrictions. I want more options and more freedom, even if it means being called a fag more often. As long as there is a way to mute or block these ignorant people, there is no problem. Fuck censorship. |

Oh fuck off, of course I don't walk around in public and say terrible things but it's an inherent part of being online and if you don’t believe that then you’re either ignorant or delusional. I think people have every right to say whatever they want and if it’s vitriolic and hateful or ignorant then like Inazuma65 said I can mute that person. Oh and guess what, if you don’t like my comments you can ignore me! I don’t understand why we can’t count on our own devices and just handle it… this is why governments think we’re so stupid. I think we all know the formula... ![]() |

To each their own opinion. I just don't think behavior shown in the video should be tolerated by any community. As far as ignoring you, well that would be silly because this is a forum, and I'm here to talk with other gamers. Edited by ciscoidiot, Apr 26 2012, 11:19 PM.

That was far too civil... Anyway, I did watch it, and I'm not impressed. There's literally nothing new about this and the "solutions" like the auto mute (do you know how many people on my friends' list mute an entire room as soon as they join?) are idealistic at best. Especially on a paid service such as XBL. |

I suppose my issue is that it's tolerated or accepted as being a norm for the gaming community. Amongst my peers we all understand that XBL is full of savage hateful young people with the audience to say whatever they want. However, if I was 13 years old and my parents found out what was being said by the average player in a game of CoD they would probably be upset. I couldn't have said "Oh, don't worry mom and dad, calling women slutty bitches, whores, and cunts is just what we do for fun. Oh and don't worry about the black people on there, we're mean to them too!" When did trash talk require people to be sexist and racist? Do you like the fact that you have to mute an entire group of people because you can't stand to hear the crap they're saying? Sorry, I just find it foul. |

Man, I feel Extra Credits need to hop down from their moral highhorse and reel in their white knighting douchebaggery. This isn't just gaming voicechat, it's an issue spawned as a moronic side effect of the nature of the Internet. Anyone that has spent any time online will know it's populated by utter retards. It's an 'issue' that will never go away, and nor should it. It's up to the recipient to understand that they're heading into a public forum populated by utter morons. If they don't like what they're hearing - mute and report. It's unrealistic and naive to think that given free-speech and a media to express it, that there won't be abuse. Hell, I'd go as far as to say that the 'victims' of comments just need to HTFU. Mute, report and move on. Absolutely no point in crying about it. Edited by AndsyRR, Apr 27 2012, 01:40 AM.

So, instead of fighting for a cause they believe in, even when odds are against them, you'd rather they just give up? Accept the hate and do nothing about it? The point of this episode wasn't necessarily to say, "Hey, here are all these great solutions!" because the EC crew admit that the ones they offered aren't perfect, but to at least get people thinking about this and not just letting the status quo remain. Besides, the stuff they're talking about isn't even remotely about trolls being trolls, it's about people being inconsiderate assholes and not taking responsibility for the words they use. Like the example they cited early on in the episode, during the Cross Assault competition, there was a heavy amount of rampant sexism. Sure, Super_Yan passed it off for a while, but after days and days of harassment, it just sort of wore down the girl, so she finally got sick of it and forfeited. The harassment was so blatant to viewers on the streams that Capcom also issued a formal apology for not realizing what was going on earlier. Later on, statements made by the chief harasser actually went so far as to say that removing sexual harassment from fighting game tournaments would be morally unjust. That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard, and it's certainly not something I want to be guilty by association with as a gamer. (Also, just in case no one believes me, I'll link to it here.) Also, the insensitivity of the last statement tells me that you've never really been bullied before. I'm sorry, but it's not the fault of the offended people that they're offended by the spewing hatred of idiots. You're right, there will always be idiots, but that doesn't mean you simply have to sit on your hands and do nothing about it. I mean, are you really okay with this? The fact that things like this are causing people to abandon video games a wide brush of an opinion that "many gamers must think this about me," is disheartening. (And while that doesn't sound very rational, when people have been harassed, abused, or even just insulted, they never really think rationally.) Edited by CronoLink9, Apr 27 2012, 04:12 AM.

That's completely different. You can't draw a comparison between a girl being in an inescapable situation at the event, and one that allows you to silence the troll with the push of a button. Of course I'm not saying that the real life trolling is OK, I'm saying that shit should be punished accordingly. The event organisers should have warned, and then kicked out the sexist arseholes. This poor lass should never have been made to feel like she should forfeit, it's inexcusable. But online interactions are so very easily ignored. People need to stop being so sensitive when it comes to online interactions, if you don't like it, ignore it, move on and enjoy your game. ![]() But no, going on a self righteous crusade to silence the Internets because you don't like what they're saying is stupid. The Internet should be uncensored (within reason of course, no kiddie porn etc). It's up to the recipient to decide what, and what not to listen to. Suck it up peoples. It's the Internets. |

I don't really understand what's so different here. The only difference is that online you have the ability to mute someone being disgusting, in person you don't have that option. You just have to endure the garbage. I think what's important about the video and the guys at EC is that they're addressing the issue, not necessarily the solutions. There is something wrong with people if they think it's okay to speak to others like that. If it's not tolerated in society, why is it tolerated online? Why can't gamers use voice chat as intended? It's usually muted because of trolls or used to troll others, never to actually communicate tactics unless you're in a party chat with friends. Instead a generation of gamers have the understanding that it's okay to log in and say whatever they can get away with. |

My question remains: Why is it too difficult to mute a troll? I don't listen to anyone on public chat whatsoever, and I haven't for many, many years. I've learnt my lesson. I can only hear a high-pitched kiddo call me a gay ass nigger fag so many times before it grows tired. It doesn't offend me, nor was I offended the times I was told I was going to be killed, my family raped and killed etc etc. You cannot silence these people en mass, without stepping on the toes of people who are doing nothing wrong. I think the main issue here, is people are too damn sensitive about online interactions. The fact that you have people refusing to use XBL due to abuse speaks just as much about them, as it does about the trolls. Get abuse > Report and Mute > Harden the fuck up. Microsoft, Sony etc need to take these reports seriously, and be hot on the press with dealing with abuse claims very seriously. Anyone uses the word 'nigger' or variant thereof for example, should be warned, and then banned. Same with false claims, chuck out an abuse claim without foundation, you get warned, and then banned. This 'earn the right to chat' bollocks is unrealistic and stupid. There will always be dicks in the world, there will always be people saying shit you don't like or agree with. Sure, the frequency is amplified online, but so are your tools to ignore the idiots you don't like. People just need to stop getting offended for the sake of being offended. TLDR: Online - suck it up pussy. Mute and report. Dont be a little wuss and cry about it. Real Life - Shit needs to be taken seriously. Sexism isn't cool, nor is racism or any other kind of 'ism. Except furryism. Fuck those dudes. |

Yep, although I think online it's an ignore it and move on situation that event needed to have somebody step and give one warning... and then an ejection. Plain and simple... kick those assholes out, that's the fault of organizers who are either too stupid or too scared to do something. Oh, and furries freak me out, even if one is Will Wheton. |

He was on The Guild as a furry and now we've gotten off topic lol. So seriously though, you mentioned 13 year olds and there are a LOT of them playing online, playing M rated games, and playing unsupervised. What do you think about that? |

WW actually walked through the youtube meetup at PAX Prime last year wearing his dick robe, so it should be on the HCG PAX meetup episode. Onto the topic, I think kids playing M rated games is another monster in itself. In a nutshell, I don't think kids playing Call of Duty makes them all hot and frothy at the mouth when they get online. I think it's a cultural norm, so these kids get on there, hear these horrible things and think it's okay. If mom and dad aren't around then they get away with it, and continue. I think 13 is an acceptable age for kids to play M rated games as long as the parents understand what they're getting their kids for entertainment. |
