Hey Jesus, whats your thoughts on the guitar player buckethead?
I saw Buckethead play live one night years ago... and I got really bored with him very quickly. I just felt the dude was running scales for 30 minutes.

However, I like anything wacky and weird, so I totally dig his style! I also think he's done some cool stuff with Guns n Roses & Les Claypool

Metal Jesus, people often have misconceptions about buckethead saying he only shreds and has no soul. But you really have to dig for the good stuff off his albums. Buckethead, yes he can often play the scales a little long but he only does that really at live shows. As i've been to about two of his live shows myself. I'll give you a example on some of his more soulful tunes. Hopefully you'll give these songs a appreciation you being a guitar player yourself. By the way the stuff with Les Claypool was pretty sweet.

I've found buckethead to be hit and miss, some of his tunes are really interesting where others I find forgettable. It's really a hit or miss.

He is an undoubtedly talented musician, but i know people in my town that verge on virtuoso and after a while you tend to think guys like this get a bit too much praise. I like his work with Les Claypool though, anything funky and quirky gets me going.

I've never listened to Warbringer, but this track sounds too much like modern Kreator to me...It sounds like its right off of the Enemy of God album.

I used to listen to Hayseed Dixie quite a bit too but not really so much anymore. It was the AC/DC tribute that got me into them but i actually prefer some of thier other covers.

I don't mind shredding, it usually means you know the ins and outs of your instrument. What I find most irritating is when people go into a Death song and claim that Death isn't because Schuldiner isn't near virtuoso as Mustaine. You can't even make such a comparison, aside from the fact that there's long guitar solos, Sound of Perseverance has a completely different feel.

Chuck Schuldiner is waaaaay better than Dave Mustaine. Mustaine is mainly pentatonic all the way with a few injections of colour here and there.

Chuck is a different beast altogether, less of the rock licks and way more inventive with his phrasing. Thats the the simplest way i can break it down anyway.

Loving the segment so far. I'm a huge grunge fan and that was really cool hearing you guys briefly touch on grunge later in the podcast and living in the Seattle music scene in the 90's. Very envious! So im hoping MJ formally gives one of his favorite grunge albums some spotlight during the segment.

Some recommendations I'd like to add:
- "Mutter" by Rammstein (Released 2001)
- "As Daylight Dies" by Killswitch Engage (Released 2006)
- "Killing With A Smile" by Parkway Drive (Released 2005)

All classic metal & metalcore albums, definitely check them out!

Nice! Live aus Berlin is a great album (and DVD).. I prefer the harsher sounds of their guitars outside of the studio.. If I'm not mistaken I think they will be in Seattle (or were?) within the month...? I've never seen them live, but that'd be badass to do so!

I love your new segment for the show, Jesus. I've noticed a lot of people talking about Warbringer but I never heard their music until now, I think the next time I need some new metal I'll pick them up. I'm not a fan of contemporary country music but I grew up on Johnny Cash, Charlie Pride and Willie Nelson so Hayseed Dixie sounds like it will be a great addition to the country music I like to listen too. Blanche is a great folk/country group that people have described as Gothic Folk because of some the moods their songs convey. If you check them out you'll notice that the male lead vocalist played Luther Perkins in Walk the Line.

Also, what's your thoughts on High on Fire's new album De Vermis Mysteriis? I've been really digging that album along with Rise and Fall's Faith album.

For Pete: If you like more melodic epic sounding metal you should check out Amon Amarth. They've been described as viking metal and have a similar feel to the metal you like but the vocals are little more growly and angry.

I haven't listened to High on Fire in a couple years. I guess I got burned out on them from listening too much when their Surrounded By Thieves album came out. I should add that to my Want list...

Glad you like the new segment!

Amon Amarth are awesome =p I like quite a bit of Viking, Folk Metal and Melodic Death Metal like In Flames. Power Metal is one of my favourite sub-genres too, I never thought I'd hear Sonata Arctica on the podcast, awesome stuff! =D

Also Travis, you put the same link twice, but I'll link to an Amon Amarth song for ya http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSJWOV44Otc&feature=relmfu

MJ, with you being from the Seattle area I was wondering if you had heard of the prog rock group The Fall of Troy? They have been broken up for the last 2 years or so but before their split they released one hell of a concept EP called Phantom on the Horizon. The EP is split in to 5 songs (or chapters) and tells the story of a Spanish galleon ship encountering a ghost ship from another dimension. The EP comes in at only 37 minutes so I highly recommend listening to the whole thing. There are times when the songs can get pretty epic!

Also... Thomas Erak is one of the greatest guitar players of this generation. Not my opinion... simple fact
(For those who disagree.... Go see a live show)

You are the second person to ask me this in a week? Crazy! I thought they were just a one hit wonder with that song "I Believe in the Thing Called Love". That song was a pretty cool mix of Queen and hair metal... but I don't know anything beyond that.
