Now, most of you are probably wondering what this title is about, well, let me tell you, I have officially declared the Legend of Zelda series dead. Now, let me rewind a bit, as a young boy, at the age of 3 or 4, I put a game into my SNES, out of sheer chance of seeing the game in a Walmart add in the paper, and saying to myself "Hey, I have that game! I wanna play it!" (My mom technically sold the game on Ebay, but the guy never payed for it, some say luck, I say fate.) That game happened to be The Legend of Zelda, A Link to the Past, and it was the game that made me love video games. I played the living fuck out of that game, clocking in atleast 100 hours, and for a 3 year old, that's a lot of time. Now lets fast forward to the year 2000, it's my birthday, and my family was quite poor at the time, so all I ever had was my Super Nintendo (And my neighbor's Ps1) but that morning I awoke to my slightly wealthy uncle over at my house with a large gift, It's a N64 Pokemon Stadium bundle, my eyes lit up, but wait, there was more, my parents pull a gift out, saying they looked all over, and grabbed the last copy of whatever this gift was at a Toys R Us. To my surprise, it was Ocarina of Time. Now I've played other Zelda games, the Gameboy games, which I loved all of, DX, Ages, and Seasons, but Ocarina was something else. This game, Ocarina of Time, is one of the biggest parts of my life, hell, it's even responsible for allowing me to meet my best friend in the whole world, and it allowed my family to bond, it was one of the only games we would crowd around the T.V and help each other play. so you can understand my love for this game. I put well over 200- 300 hours in this game, most of which just fucking about, picking up chickens, exploring, all sorts of stuff. A year later I bought Majora's mask, just as excited, but, to my dismay, it didn't have the same spark as Ocarina did for me, and felt like more of the same, nothing too new, but granted, it was still fun. A few years later I hear an announcement about a new Zelda game, called Wind Waker, it would change up the formula a bit, and boy was I excited. As it was released, I bought it and the strategy guide on day one, and sat down with my family to relive the Zelda experience...except...we didn't. The first thing I realized about Wind Waker was that it didn't look like a Zelda game, and sailing around the map felt like padding instead of a key part of gameplay, and to be fair, I haven't played Wind Waker since I was a kid, but it was the first Zelda game to leave a bad taste in my mouth. But wait, it's 2004, talk of a new Zelda game, it bringing back the old graphics and gameplay style, oh boy, my excitement rose again. I had Twilight Princess pre-ordered at a local blockbuster for 2 or 3 years, so as you could tell, I was excited. I got a new Wii that year, and Twilight for both Gamecube and Wii, but of course I played the Gamecube version, but, sadly, I never finished it, that bad taste was still there. The game felt like one big gimmick, and had no where near captured the magic of the Zelda games I once knew. After a few DS games that were sub par at best (Nothing compared to the old GB games) and 5 years, I finally see something new at E3, a Zelda game called Skyward Sword, I also hear talk how it beats Ocarina of Time for best Zelda game, but little to my knowledge, that would be the death of Zelda in my eyes.

Now that we're up to speed, and you basically know my whole Zelda life story, you will understand why it is so hard for me to say this, but it must be said. The Legend of Zelda, Skyward Sword is awful. It does not deserve the title of Zelda. It is a Wiimotion plus cash in, with very limited monster types, areas, items, dungeons, and, well, everything, Ocarina had more content without padding it, hell, the original Zelda had more content that is. The game is also padded to hell and back. By no means is it a broken game and unplayable, like Kain and Lynch 2, but it honestly brought me more sadness and pain than happiness. I caught glimpses of happiness when I had the occasional fun boss fight, but other than that, I disliked almost the entire game. When a game does that, you know something is wrong. Miyamoto even said he was taking Zelda and running it into a different direction, and if is the direction he is going, I want no part of it. Skyward Sword was not a Zelda game, though it tried to be. The game I love is in here somewhere, but it is bogged down by shit controls and little innovation. Many may say it's my nostalgia talking, but it isn't. Play Ocarina and Skyward side by side, you'll realize which is the better game.

Well, I'm off to fight the final boss of this game, and finish this. I just wanted to take a break and talk about how Zelda could potentially be dead forever in my eyes, unless Nintendo step's it up in the WiiU version, and please Nintendo, no gimmicks. RIP Zelda, I don't want you to finish out like this, so I hope one day you are brought back to the land of the living, with all new innovation, but keeping that Zelda charm alive. Also, I would like to say lets please keep this professional, and if you somehow actually like Skyward Sword, don't flame me about how it is "da bestest gaem evar" and how much I suck, remember, this is my opinion.

I did for a bit, but never got around to beating it. It had that Wind Waker art style, so I kinda threw it out of my mind, but I'll have to give it another shot.

I get why people don't like the motion controls, but I enjoy them. That's probably why I like the game so much I guess. Ocarina is my favorite, but Skyward Sword is a great game in its own right. The controls made it feel so refreshing and it had brilliant level design. I liked the music and story as well. The world was very colorful and detailed, even if a little bit small.

I wouldn't give up on Zelda if I were you. If the next one looks anything like the tech demo they showed at E3 last year, then it will probably be amazing.

Interesting story!

I never grew up with a Nintendo console, always playing the Sega and Sony consoles until 2003 when I received a GameCube with Zelda Wind Waker. As my first experience with a Zelda, I was blown away by the game. Awesome graphics, great gameplay and awesome exploration. I gave up at the end game because the Triforce Pieces hunting took too long and felt like padding. It took me 6 years to go back to it and finish it!

After I finally finished it I started to get into playing NES/SNES games so I played Zelda 1 and Zelda 2. I was not that blown away, they aged poorly in my opinion and only felt they were awesome in the 80s period. Also tried Phantom Hourglass and Twilight Princess but alas gave up on them after a few hours.

Then came November 2011, I was not excited whatsoever for Skyward Sword but with the revival of the Wii with Xenoblade and the Limited Edition 3DS bundle with Ocarina of Time I decided to give the series one more chance! And it succeded, I loved Skyward Sword. Fantastic gameplay and together with Super Mario Galaxy the pinnacle of good motion controls which contribute to the overall experience. I loved the focus on the story which as a huge JRPG nut is a must for me in games.

The dungeon were unique in my opinion and the optional stuff was enough to continue doing them instead of just too much sidequests and only focusing on the main quest.

It edged out Wind Waker as my favorite Zelda game.

Last February is started Ocarina of Time and after 2 weeks I finished it. While the game is once again a pinnacle game of the 90s with converting a popular series to 3D I felt the Hyrule overworld was bland, the storyline was nearly non-existant and several dungeons (water temple) were frustrating. While I think Ocarina of Time is a good game it does not top Wind Waker and Skyward Sword for me.

Last month I played Twilight Princess which was also a good game and ranks on number 4 under Ocarina of Time. I didn't enjoy the Wolf transformation and the "weak" motion controls but overall a good iteration, graphics wise I prefer that cel-shaded look.

So far I have not yet started three games that could get close the top 3, Majora's Mask, Awakening DX and of course (arguably the most popular game I have yet to play) A Link to the Past.

Overall the series so far is very hit and miss but I have enjoyed the big releases. I am interested to see how they are going to evolve this series on the Wii U. I hope there will be more focus on storyline and perhaps even other controlable characters for dungeons. I for one would like to play as an antagonist of Link trying to thwart his progress through a dungeon and setting/resetting puzzles along the way....

Well.... I disagree, but If you don't like new zelda games, thats fair enough. I will say that It looks like your main problem with it is motion controls. Now, when that is your main system feature, your first party game will obviously take advantage of it, and in my opinion, it is the best example on the system. They only messed up for me once, when I was trying to roll a bomb and it got stuck constantly looking up xD

But apart from that, IMO it has GREAT level design, music and art style (as has every zelda game I have personally played, I never had a Gamecube though :( Twilight Princess is my favourite since Ocarina, for the dark theme alone... yes the controls were a little wonky sometimes to be fair, but it was a first gen game on the new system). I even like the rpg style side quests, they are almost totaly optional too, so I don't understand why some people complain about it being padded out. They are there for people who want to get the most time out of the game.

So yeah, fair enough if you don't like the direction Zelda is moving, or motion control (some peole are just not into that) but SS is far from awful.

See, I feel as if the motion controls were my biggest problem, I understand they wanted to take advantage of the Wii's hardware, but the constant messing me up just put me off.

I think the real reason you are upset is because you are looking at the older games through nostalgia goggles. Now I could be wrong considering I HATE the zelda franchise (please don't kill me!) but If you were to go back and play the older games with a fresh outlook you would find they are only a little better than the newer ones. I personally have made the same mistake with the Smash Brothers Franchise

I HATE SKYWARD SWORD TOO! Finally, someone who agrees with me...

I enjoy all the other Zelda games though. I highly urge you to give wind waker another try, even though it is not your idea of a Zelda game, it is a great game in its own right.

Skyward Sword however... If that game didn't have the Zelda Licence everyone would also discount it.

Skyward Sword is by no means a terrible game, but if you don't like it, then that's perfectly fine. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion.

In terms of a "MotionPlus cash in," I would almost argue that the little Wii Remote add-on was designed for this game, if they hadn't released information that they almost didn't use it in the game (and that would have been just a yee-haw waggle fest like Twilight Princess was). I've been very critical of motion control, and until Zelda came out, I was having a hard time seeing any positives it really had. This game, along with other gems like Child of Eden, is living proof that full-blown motion gaming really CAN work, granting that the developers truly use all their assets. I wouldn't really consider it a cash-in in the least simply because the controls work, and they work very well (not perfect, but well).

Taken from your story, I would agree with Soawsum and that a lot of the disappointment you're feeling is because of nostalgia, especially because I feel a similar way (not the disappointment part because I loved Skyward Sword to death, but I can also wistfully remember growing up on A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time, Mario 64, and a handful of other games). Me personally, I don't think any future Zelda game will ever top Ocarina of Time in my favorite Zelda games because of my nostalgia. It's true that with the sky high expectations all Zelda games seem to have, it's easy feel disappointed when they come out because we all want them to make us feel just like we did when Ocarina of Time or A Link to the Past first came out. I personally don't let new releases "kill" series' for me. But I understand how nostalgia could do that.

Sounds like a classic case of overhype. For me it was kinda painful to finish Twilight Princess (I liked the game but somehow I had a long break in the middle) but I freaking loved Skyward Sword, in some aspects even more than Ocarina of Time. Maybe mostly the characters, the art style and the soundtrack is effin brilliant but I agree that Ocarina of Time has a better world to explore.

Happy to see two people on here who don't think Skyward Sword is as brilliant as other people claim it is because I don't have the desire to finish it whatsoever. I finished all the other home console Zelda games except for the first two but Skyward Sword I just got bored of after the third dungeon, which was fun but just other things left a bad taste in my mouth. Not a whole lot of people like Twilight Princess from what I can gather on here and yet I loved it and felt it was better than Ocarina in some aspects. But A Link to the past will always be my favourite since it is my favourite game of all time after all and the first Zelda game I can remember playing vividly.

I think you should play games like Skyrim, if you want the equivalent of what Ocarina of Time was in the 90's in terms of environment exploration and side-quests.

I liked Skyward Sword alot, i didn't mind the motion controls as the game was made for them. (I didn't like the waggle controls for Twilight Princess - i preferred the Gamecube version.)

I can understand your frustration i have enjoyed all the Zelda Games i have played but all console games since Majora's Mask haven't topped their predecessors. Wind Waker & Twilight Princes i loved, but they were way too easy. Skyward Sword had too much back tracking and not as much side-quests and environments to explore (i believe a limitation of the Wii hardware.)

I always will love Zelda, but i am in particular excited for Zelda HD on Wii U, or a Retro Studios developed Zelda.

The future of Zelda is bright, i don't think the franchise is anywhere close to being dead. There are other great games out there to keep you busy until a Zelda came comes along that will surpass your own personal expectations. Just be patient. :)

I understand your disappointment. I didn't like Twilight Princess that much, but I don't hate it either. And I will play it again.

However,I did enjoy Skyward Sword. I really like the way they went with it and it made sense to me since it is suppose to be the first Zelda game (I think,I get lost with the timeline and come up with one of my own. ;p) But I liked how it explained things and how it ended. I was very happy with the game.

My favorite Zelda is Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask (they are tied). A Link to the Past was also my first Zelda game! And I understand what you are saying about Ocarina of Time. I remember first playing it and just being blown away by the world and everything to do in it.

But there is not a Zelda game to date that I hate. I love them all in their own way, even if Twilight Princess disappointed me a bit.

I've never been disappointed with a Zelda game. Now, I grew up on N64 (I'm turning 20 in a couple months), so my first Zelda experience was Ocarina of Time. Maybe it's this that corrupts my viewpoint, but still, I've found that each game has been crafted in a similar yet unique manor. Zelda isn't dead, it's just making some adjustments to keep things fresh while retaining major features that make the franchise so special.

I love Zelda, but i'm a leftie. Because of my leftieness( is that a word?), all the motion controls are screwed up. I can't even kill a scultula without dying 5 times. I love the dungeon layout, level design, and story of Skyword sword, but the controls killed it. The DS Zelda's had the same problem with certain puzzles, but not to the same extent skyword sword does. My favorite zelda games are twilight prinsess, and Link to the past.
