Whenever my dad sees me playing video games, he always gets mad at it (well, he gets mad at me if I'm doing anything but chores, he's a workaholic.) He wouldn't let me have a video game system until I was 10, and when I did, he was calling Nintendo a sin and stuff like that. I've just heard nothing but bad stuff from the press and parents why video games are evil, and not even violent ones. All this stuff begs me to ask, What What about video games do parents hate? They don't hate movies and other forms of entertainment, so why video games?

I've heard of this but I've never experienced it. My mom and dad bought an NES back in the 80's and even my dad came one day with a Sega Genesis and we didn't even ask for one. My cousins were big gamers as well and they had SNES, TurboGraphix (which I never got to play), NES, and during the 6th gen, brought us a bunch of games they didn't need anymore.

Even today, I have like 7 systems and my mom doesn't seem to care. The only time she saw us play a video game was when my bro was fighting the giant monster from Final Fantasy X (I think it was Sin but I forgot), and she commented saying "You gotta fight that giant monster?". Also, an employee where I used to work said she's buying a 3DS for her 5 year old daughter so.

So yeah, it's maybe your parents because my parents were cool with it, with my cousins being big gamers.

I guess they just have a different viewpoint really. I've never had a problem with it, but some of my old friends did. I dont think they realise its the "new" medium of entertainment, im sure people thought radio and TV was rubbish too...and where would we be without them?

To say its a sin is a little harsh to be honest haha. Having innocent fun is a sin? Im def going to hell if it exists then!

Well my mom and father really don't give a shit because they are the ones that made me like video games when I was a child once they bought me the genesis the rest is history. now my grandpa is all like "stop wasting your time on those damn games." but its just because he never had them in his days and well my grandma...well shes a gamer too lol she loves zelda 1, mario 3, Dr. Mario, Tetris...etc

But people are just raised different...and the people that say its a sin..ugh..not trying to start a flame war but come on that's just fucking stupid. I can't stand when someone doesn't have an open mind.

Back in the day my parents really didn't have a problem with video games, when they bought me my GameBoy and soon after the GameCube. Even when I started getting some other systems like the PlayStation 2, and even delving into PC gaming a little they didn't have a problem.

Now that I'm a gamer though my dad seems to have a problem with it. He's very stereotypical when it comes to gamers, calling us all lazy bums and so forth, worrying about nothing but video games. Kind of hurts, especially when he calls me a bum from time to time, but whatever. I really think he has a hard time accepting the fact that I'm into gaming, anime, and such, and not really big into sports. Now my mom on the other hand doesn't mind it too much actually. She enjoys games herself. Retro games, and Mario Kart mind you, but still she has no problem with it as long as they don't get in the way of anything.

My folks were ok with me and my Brother playing video games(heck, my mom plays some herself...). They kept us out of trouble for the most part.
Of course they would make sure we get our school work done as the big priority or otherwise they take our game privileges away...

Schoolwork gets in the way of video games, not the other way around. That's my philosophy.

Totally correct. We played games instead of doing crack or some other harmful bullshit.

I was always really lucky with this, my mum has always been absolutely fine with my gaming. She was the one who bought me my first console as a kid (Mega Drive) and who also gave me money a few years ago for Christmas so I could buy a 360. In the past I've asked for her opinion of my gaming and she has always said she just sees it as another form of entertainment, and that she'd rather have me playing games than out drinking and getting into trouble. I even bought her a DSi XL for her birthday and she's never off the thing so she enjoys games too!

My fiancée isn't so lucky however and gets constant shit from her family for playing games. When she was a kid they didn't mind but as she's gotten older they believe she should have grown out of it. They associate gaming with being lazy. They don't try to stop her playing games but they don't exactly encourage her either.

I guess it just boils down to different people and different opinions.

The parents hate it for possible reasons of lack of the expierence, poor expierence, and think it is a waste of time.
Parents at one point were to children but, their childhood usually varies from their children's. The reason the parents may not have expierence with video games or other forms of media is because of their parents and their upbringing. Think of your grand parents weather stubborn or sweet they all were children too but video games came after their prime so they did not pass that technology on to their children. So your parents didn't receive that nes or Atari because their parents did not invest in the console.
Another possiblilty could be a poor expierence with a system or game. Imagine this, your parents bought you that system for chirstmas you have been asking for all year. You open it up on chirstmas and get it out of the box and play it all day. 3 months later that system no longer works and your parents wont pay to fix it. How would that make you feel about video games in general? That would make me feel a little bitter so I would steer my children away from those products because of expierences.
There is a couple of possible answers hope this helps your comprehension. [luigidance]

Two Words Generation Gap
I agree... you have to understand, most parents who hate gaming grew up in an era where video games were relatively new and unknown. Our parents growing up spent most of their leisure time outside whether it was playing a sport ,watching a movie at a theater, gardening, learning something new just for fun, etc. When they see us indoors playing video games, they wonder why we are wasting our lives sitting on our asses, mashing buttons while staring at a screen when there are so many things to "accomplish" outside.

My advice is to not take their criticisms of your gaming hobby too seriously. My parents also criticise me of my gaming hobby. They constantly tell me that video games are for delusional kids who dream and fantasize about fantasies rather than reality. Its quite annoying but I deal with it. I just let them criticise me and I don't talk back.

It is foreign for them. People tend to see themselves and their generation as the one that had it right or many things right so when they lived without something and had a perfectly fine time in their minds they think that is the best for their children and others from different generations also. There are things that your grandparents hate that your parents find weird that it is a problem.

We are the next generation and there will be very few of us that are anti moderate gaming. Don't be surprised if your kids laugh at your physical games, old controllers, and overall devices down the line though.
