Capturing Video game footage

Hey everyone,

After watching many YouTube videos I am considering starting my own channel with some Lets plays, I just have a question regarding how to record videos. I am not sure the best way to capture game play from newer and older systems both. I know a HD-PVR is good for some systems but not others and same with certain capture cards. But would really love the opinion of the people that do it so often.

I have the following systems I would like to capture at some point. NES, Megadrive, PS1, N64, PS2, Gamecube, Wii, PS3, Xbox and Xbox 360. Plus future potential.

Thanks, and hope to put out videos sometime in the future.

I don't really care for HD, so all i have is a dazzle. if you want HD though, get a hauppauge HD-PVR.

Well for NES, Megadrive, PS1, and N64 you should get a Dazzle DVC 100. It would also work for PS2, GameCube, Wii, and Xbox.

If you want to record in HD I would get a HD PVR, BUT, it can't record the NES, Megadrive, PS1, or N64. Now there is one Capture Card that can but you have to have USB 3.0, or PCI alternatives. You'll have to look into it.

The Hauppage HD-PVR has composite video and audio inputs and can record from consoles like the NES or Megadrive, assuming you have composite cables for these consoles.

Other newer alternatives are the Elgato Game Capture HD (although I'm not sure if that one comes with proper composite video/audio support) and the AverMedia Live Gamer HD (PCI card, HDMI/DVI inputs only) but for your use case scenario, the Hauppage HD-PVR Gaming Edition would be the best choice imho.

It has composite inputs, but apparently it still has problems recording the retro consoles for one reason or another.

I currently use No Geek Needed as my capture device to record videos to upload them on Youtube, and stream gameplay on TwitchTV.

I prefer using S-Video on most of the games.

I have an Easy Cap, (I'm a cheap bastard) If I ever get any kind of popularity, 500+ Subs I'll invest in HD, but for now SD all the way

I have a roxio game capture card. Oh....it is so awful. In fairness I only got it for like €40 but it really doesnt produce the best of quality. I record off that and put my files through Sony Vegas. My first Crystal Chronicles video was on on the Roxio Capture card and after watching it back myself I hated the quality and switched over to Dolphin Emulator to record higher quality with fraps.
I am thinking about getting AverTV HD or something like that. I hear good things about it!

For PC game lp's (which I'm doing just now :D) I use the free version of Bandicam, which works well enough for my needs (yes I'm cheap don't judge me lol). When I hopefully get more subscribers I'll upgrade to the full version or check out fraps.

I hook up my retro systems into a Dvd recorder and then the dvd recorder into the hd pvr to help with the quality, That helps a lot dude! And I edit my videos with sony vegas, So far I'm happy with the results even tho I only have 2 vids up( just started my channel like a week ago) lol.
