I didn't really get into RPGs until I got my PS3. But I recently hooked my PS2 up again and want to pick up some RPGs. So far I have Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance, Tales of Legendia, and Suikoden Tactics. I've only played Baldur's Gate so far, but it's awesome! I know there's a second, but that one seems pricier...

I'd rather not spend more than $40 on a PS2 game, so I'm not looking to get anything super rare. For reference, some of the PS3 games I like are 3D Dot Game Heroes (sort of an RPG), Borderlands, Demon's Souls, Fallout, Oblivion/Skyrim, Kingdoms of Amalur, Sacred II, and Valkyria Chronicles. I usually don't like heavily story driven JRPGs, but if it's got good gameplay and only costs ~$10, I won't complain. :)

Yakuza 1 + 2 - Similar to a modern day, crime inspired Shenmue. It's an RPG with heavy action / beat um up sequences. Insanely deep, good storylines, all round awesomeness.

Suikoden 5 - While you mentioned Suikoden Tactics, I personally believe the ebst Suikoden game on the ps2 is number 5. Great story, easy, accessible and enough content to keep you busy for a fair while.

Dark Cloud, Dark Cloud II (Chronicle) or Rogue Galaxy - A cult favourite. Explore dungeons, find buildings to create your own village, proper giggle. :)

Dragon Quest 8 - Enough said. :D

There are tonnes more, but these are the standouts for me. You do of course have the more indepth JPRGs, Disgaea, Final Fantasy series etc, but the above are too awesome to skip.

Oh, it's not an RPG. But every single PS2 owner needs to buy GOD HAND.

Here's why:

Kingdom Hearts can never be TOO expensive, and that's the best recommendation you may get from this thread...ok, that's just the KH fan boy in me talking, but really it's an incredible game. If you like Final Fantasy, Disney Movies, JRPG's, and confusing stories, you'll love Kingdom Hearts :)

i own a bunch of rpgs:
dark cloud which sucks
rogue galaxy im playing
dragon quest 8 i am playing
radiata stories i am trying to get into it...
final fantasy tactics its on my shelf,,,,,i played it alot a long time ago
disgaea i am trying to get into it
final fantasy 10 its on my shelf
final fantasy 12 its on my shelf
kingdom hearts 1 its on my shelf
other ones i cant remember

anyway the two that i like the most and i am currently playing are dragon quest 8 and rogue galaxy........i have to say that LEVEL 5 which made the two games....really outdid themselves......i would have to say they are the best......

IF YOU DO NOT OWN IT, THE FIRST GAME YOU MUST GET IS DRAGON QUEST 8
then i would go for rogue galaxy
The only thing i dont like about level 5 games is that there are only two for the ps2, but i guess that is what happens when you take your time and do things right, you only come out with two games which really rock.....those two games are worth their prices.....for sure....

i forgot to say i also have okage, the music is freaking annoying, and the first level is something really stupid, like getting some bread from the bakery for your mom...yeah really, i will have to give it another try though

On the playstation 1 my favorite rpg was final fantasy tactics,,,,

the hardest rpg for me to get currently is dark aliance baldurs gate 2.....i recently saw one sold for like 40 dollars insane.....i really want it, i am currently playing with my brother dark alliance 1, so i want to get the second since this is one of the only top co op rpgs.....

have you played final fantasy 7......

then you have the ultra impossible rpgs to get persona 4, and the like.....

The only thing i dont like about level 5 games is that there are only two for the ps2,
PlayStation 2

Dark Cloud (2000)
Dark Chronicle (Dark Cloud 2) (2002)

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King (2004)
Rogue Galaxy (2005)

All level-5 games. Including Dark Cloud which 'sucks' :P

Thanks for all the suggestions!

I'm actually not huge on FF or Kingdom Hearts games... I have FFVII from PSN but could never get into it. I have FFIII and FFIV on DS, I beat IV but not III. They're ok, but definitely not my favorites. I rented a PS2 Kingdom Hearts game a long time ago, probably put in 8-10 hours and was just incredibly bored with it.

I was never a fan of the Dark Alliance games or the Fallout:Brotherhood of steel game myself. Alright hack and slash affair but definitley nothing next to PC Baldurs Gate or Fallout 2.

Im sure they are pretty cheap too, i see copies of BG:DA 1 and BG:DA2 for less than £10 on ebay at the moment...and thats "buy-it-now" prices.

Ebay BG:DA 1
Ebay BG:DA 2

looks like you need to get out of the final fantasy kingdom hearts world, there are better rpgs out there not just mainstream ones......if all you know is final fantasy and kingdom hearts, well that just sucks.....there is a world beyond the suckiness of square enix, nothing to do with square soft.....

i like baldurs gate, i had fun playing with my brother and buying all sorts of equipment for him....he is not good with the shopkeeper in the game, so he just let me keep all the stuff we found and i would trade it in for really strong weapons and equipment.....he was the archer i was the dwarf, a really rich dwarf in the game.....almost became a leprechaun....just kidding

but if you know any better co op games for ps2 let me know.....

For me anyway, off the top of my head...

Any of the Dynasty Warriors games
Tenchu co-op missions
Timesplitters 2
Judge Dredd VS Judge Death(Not a great game but was amazing to play the story co-op)
Metal Slug Series
Time Crisis 2
The Warriors

I just thought Dark alliance was a game with "Baldurs Gate" slapped on it, like they did with Fallout. It just didnt capture anything from the original game so i wasnt into it. Then again, the same aguement could be made for Fallout 3 and New Vegas i guess, but at least they kept a lot of elements from the originals.

I've pretty much shunned all console RPG's for a while now so im probably the worst person to ask about them or even comment on them. The last decent one i played was Dragon Quest 8, so if you enjoy traditional J-RPG's then you'll love it. It got a bit repetitive for me though, i ended up spending more time messing with the mixing pot than anything else!

Since you have suikoden tactics, I suggest suikoden 4 since they are directly tied to each other.
Personally I enjoyed suikoden 4 I dont think it should be demonized as the "weak link" of the series
because it a great game and you can find for 10 bucks or less!
