Special Episode 3: Favourite Film FapFast; Ben and Andy share their top movies with y'all

For the third Special episode, Andy and Ben decide to return to lighter territory with a topic that is near and dear to us: movies. We each pick our "Top 5" all-time favourite movies and discuss them in-depth, with the usual side helping of tangents thrown in for good measure. We hope you like our selections, and please let us know if you decide to watch any of them, and what you thoughts are. Also, we welcome everyone to share some of their favourite movies as well. Maybe we'll all discover some new gems :)

Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6SyNxBIbzk&feature=g-u-u

The MP3 and iTunes links are in the video description, however the iTunes one might take a little longer because it's on a timer.

Our final Special will be released next week, and then we're back to normality with a new episode on September 2. It's amazing how time has flown by.

Very enjoyable episode and can safely say that I did watch Dear Zachary on Netflix a few weeks back on the recommendation of yourself and Andy on twitter. Quite a powerful documentary especially when it comes to certain parts in it and I do hope more people go out and watch it on Netflix or elsewhere.

I was a big fan of Jim Carrey in the 90s with films like The Mask, Dumb & Dumber and the Ace Ventura movies and I am just wondering if any of you have ever seen The Majestic? It is one of those more serious roles ala Truman Show or Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (which I have yet to see but heard good things about). I think it is a great film and was directed by Frank Darabont (Shawshank Redemption, Green Mile, Walking Dead). You can check the trailer here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHZldxzY1h0

Can't say I have watched any of the other films you mentioned in both your top 5s from what I recall (maybe Short Circuit 2) but I have plenty to check out nonetheless over the next few weeks! Below are some of my favourite films in no particular order:

City of God
The Shawshank Redemption
The Green Mile
Back to the Future Trilogy
A League of Their Own
Lord of the Rings trilogy
Pixar films but The Incredibles is my favourite
The Muppet Christmas Carol
Spirited Away
Con Air
Forrest Gump

Could go on but those are some I can recall from the top of my head at the moment! Muppets is part of my annual Christmas Eve tradition where I only watch it on that day and then wait another year to watch it again and I love that film and easily my favourite Christmas flick!

Excellent choices, Darro. I have seen The Majestic and I think it's a highly underrated movie, though I still think the better "serious" Jim Carrey movies are still Man on the Moon and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. The Shawshank Redemption and Back to the Future are also ace recommendations.

It's also funny how you mentioned having movies that you watch on Christmas Eve as a tradition. In my family, we have two movies that we watch every holiday season: National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation and A Christmas Story. We typically watch these movies on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day and we never get tired of them.

Damn, forgot about Man on the Moon! It's been ages since I seen that film but it's another film I quite like! I love the REM song of the same name as well!

Loving the Jim Carey talk, he was one of the few actors I grew attached to as a kid, and I people are critical of his character, but I absolutely love his nonsensical roles. The main film I like of his and have repeatedly watched over the years has been The Cable Guy, aside from that, I really enjoyed Yes man and Truman show. I also enjoyed Mask and Ace Ventura, but it has been years since I've watched those. Darro, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind went way over my head, it's one of those films you have to seriously keep up with, more so than Inception.

I have a question for everyone in regards to movies. I feel like I'm not moved by horror films such as the notorious A Serbian Film, and the only kinds of horros films that sort of bothered me were films like The Fourth Kind, The Ring and Paranormal Activity. Mainly because they deal with apparitions, etc, and feed on paranoia. How they've bothered me is how they build tension, and how they become difficult to watch. I'd say to the point where I have to pause the DVD and take frequent breaks. But even more interesting is how I don't have any problem watching something like A Serbian Film, but find it hard to watch romantic dramas or even many romcoms. I have to take pauses because I find it hard to watch, but I've found that I enjoy these kinds of films. :| Which leads to my question, do you guys share similar or differing experiences?

Favorite film is Once Upon a Time in the West. Favorite movie is Back to the Future. Once Upon a Time in the West is just a masterpiece in my opinion. Still impresses me every time I watch it. I could go on and on about it, but I'll stop at masterpiece ;)

As far as "movies" go, Back to the Future is classic. Movies like Big Trouble in Little China, Caddyshack, Blazing Saddles, Ghostbusters, etc. would fill the top spots. Love a good comedy. As far as current stuff, I like Paul Thomas Anderson. Boogie Nights was one of the better films in the 90's and the same for There will be Blood in the 2000's.

To add on some of your picks. The chase scene with Oscar and Johnny 5 is amazing ;)  As for Spinal Tap, def look into the DVD where they do the commentary in character.  And as for documentaries, look into Best Worst Movie. It's on Netflix and based on Troll 2.

P.S.

I think we all have experienced movies that we cannot, for whatever reason, watch all in one sitting. One perfect example is "Dear Zachary", which was discussed in this episode and I have since watched. The subject matter is quite difficult to stomach at times, and some key moments will hit you like a load of bricks. For this reason, I had to pause the movie on a few occasions and gather my bearings. I'm not ashamed to admit that I also had to pause to dry my eyes. Sometimes a movie moves faster than your ability to process it, so taking a break is a good way to get through it and completely comprehend it.

The other movies I tend to pause a lot are documentaries. Some of them hurl a lot of information at me, so I need to step back and assimilate all the facts before proceeding, and I'll often pause the movie to look up details on the internet. It's an interesting way to enjoy the movie, and I tend to walk away a better perspective since I took the time to properly digest what it is showing me. The only other instances where I pause frequently are during exceptionally long movies. I find sitting still hard for extended periods of time, so taking a bathroom and snack break is often essential.

I implore everyone that listens to this podcast to go watch 'Dear Zachary'. It's on netflix, available on DVD... just watch it, whichever way you can.

I have no difficulty admitting it had me bawling like a baby. I plan on watching it for the 3rd time, and I fully expect the same results. Just, watch it.

I've never ever cried at a movie, game or television show in my whole life. Will I at Dear Zachary? I'm not sure I want to break my streak.

It is very likely if you will. I'm not easily brought to tears by a movie, but "Dear Zachary" succeeded as few others have.

Dug the Jackie Chan talk. What Andy said was very spot on with how I feel, too. Honestly, there were quite a few movies you guys mentioned that I haven't seen. Unfortunately, because of where I live, it's pretty difficult to find some of those movies.

As for my five favorite films, in no particular order:

The Godfather: Part II - This film is such a classic and deserving of its praise, I think. I love the jump back and forth between the present and the past.

Planet of the Apes (Series sans Beneath) - Yeah, I might get a bit of flak for this one, but they have sentimental value to me. Probably one of the last things I did with my grandfather before he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Personally, I really liked most of the films, though I have never read the novel nor have I the latest reboot. I did see the one that came out around 2000 and that was horrid. Also, as a side note, Captain Taylor, Charlton Heston's character, is where I got my name.

2001: A Space Odyssey - I'm a really big fan of Science Fiction and Stanley Kubrick films, so this was definitely a joy for me to watch. It is astounding how the film was released in 1968. You can definitely tell with the apparel, but it still looks amazing. The novel series by Arthur C. Clarke is an enjoyable read, too.

Casablanca - Not much to say that hasn't been said before about this film. Memorable lines, scenes, etc.

Die Hard - Awesome 80s classic:p

As for my least favorite film:

Game of Death - It still floors me that they actually put in footage from Lee's funeral.
My 3DS Friend code: 2148 - 8833 - 4520

Listening to the episode now... Just to address what other people have said i.e. MidiPour, LMG, etc... I guess different genres of film affect different people... differently?? lol.. So eloquent, I know... no though, I find gory torture-style movies difficult to watch (I don't like them at all, really... from 80s slasher flicks to the more modern Hostel and Saws of the world...) but I do find more cerebral, paranormal horror such as the Ring as you had mentioned more enjoyable...

That being said, LMG, I'm sure you'll find yourself shedding tears to some form of media presentation before too long. I hadn't really full-on cried during a film until I had similar events in my own life from which to compare to a particular movie, if that makes sense...

Anyways all of that aside if I had to say what my top 5 films might be I would say (in no particular order...)

Trainspotting - a great redemptive, fun tale of junkies going about their lives and coming out the other side. I saw this movie at exactly the right moment and the melody of "Born Slippy" hitting just as Renton's character is hit with a waft of smoke is cinematic brilliance...

Waltz with Bashir - the less you know about this film before giving it a go I think the better... as a pseudo-documentary and animation showpiece it's a great film... The ending fittingly left me in a reflective mood with chills... not for everyone, but the themes and overall effect of the movie are something I think everyone should experience...

Fight Club - I'll always dig this movie for its dark humor and philosophical implications... plus it got me into checking out more of Palahniuk's work, so that was a plus...

American History X - not a movie I can watch repeatedly but a film that left a long-lasting effect within my mind, similar to the manner in which Waltz with Bashir had... a slow burn of a movie but it ends effectively... one of few films I've cried during... Hey, my brother just moved away, gimme a break! :P

Dark City - a great film filled with a less-common cast... if you like funky sci fi and / or thriller style movies where you make sense of what is going on a the film goes then check it out. The character designs and film noir setting are cinematic candy, and each cast member present delivers a great performance. Mr. Hand is the sheeeeiiiiiit lol...

Haven't had a chance to fully listen to the episode, however I can echo Andy's love for Ace Ventura & Kung Pow Enter the Fist. I grew up with all 3 movies and still love them to this day just the same. I'm also a big fan of Happy Gilmore. It's another movie in the same realm as those 3 for me and I found the humor to be just hysterical.

When it comes to best movies that I feel have been made and that I can appreciate it: it would have to be hands down, the Back to the Future Trilogy. I don't think I've ever watched a movie, let alone three in a row, that had me so captivated. My first experience with them was about 6 months ago when I picked up the Blu Ray set on special for $25 on Amazon. It has to have been the best Blu Ray purchases I have made.

Really, really loved this episode! All the John Woo talk, Jim Carey, etc...

Here are some of my favorites:

The Shining: This is a brilliant example of just how amazing Kubrick is as a director. I love how bright the movie is, as opposed to the typically dark, shadowy hotel.. That scene where the ball is rolled down the hallway by a ghost...and yet it's in the middle of the day... scared the shit out of me as a kid.

John Carpender"s The Thing: This movie is a gruesome movie typical of the 80s, but so much smarter than most. Instead, you are paranoid and suspicious of everyone in the movie, including the main character! Brilliant story.

Fight Club: David Fincher is in my top 5 of all time favorite directors. I just love his dense & dark style. His movies are smart, weird, edgy and incredibly well acted. I love the twist at the end of this movie, no matter how absurd it is. Fight the system!

Back to the Future: This movie has quite possibly one of the tightest movie scripts in history. So many little touches that pay off in the end. I actually love the entire series. So much fun.

First Blood: This is one of the best written and acted action dramas of all time. Here is just a normal guy who is reluctantly pushed too far by the sheriff who is a bully, and the town has no idea what a shitstorm they have gotten themselves into. That speech Stallone gives at the end of the movie is pretty heardbreaking too. I love this movie.

All of Kubrick's films are a masterpiece in fucking with you really. After all, he did make a film for Shining, Lollita and Clockwork Orange, which were all unsettling novels. LOL

I chose 6 instead of 5, I had a hard time choosing what I'd watch a couple of times, and it comes down to these films.

The Disappearance of Haruhi Sezumiya - Kind of a guilty pleasure, I know it's not a studio ghibli film, but I really enjoy the Haruhi Sezumiya anime. Loved the first season, and albeit the second season left me scratching my head in frustration, the movie completely made up for trololo of the endless 8.

Blue Valentine - A romantic drama which depicts the beginnings and end of a relationship, it's really difficult to watch the film as it transitions back and forth from the beginning and end of the couple's relationship. But that's my pleasure of watching this film comes from.

Control - A fictional representation of Ian Curtis' life and breakthrough as an artist, along with his marital, drinking and epileptic problem he endures leading on to his death. Very addicting to watch.

Lost in Translation - Scarlett Johansson <33

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest - Jack Nicholson <33

Enter the Void - I saw irreversible before this, which is probably the better film by narrative standards, and this film is definitely convoluted in delivering a message. But I just love the neon lights, the recollection memories and dark alley ways depicted in this film. It's a film you roll a blunt to, despite its haunting message. U__U
