For this week's episode, Ben and Andy are flying solo as they discuss the past, present and future of handheld gaming. Our histories with it, how it's evolved and where it's going. Since the podcast has been on hiatus for over a month, you can also expect lots of discussion about games being played, TV shows being enjoyed and more of the same tomfoolery that you've come to expect. The rascals are back, baby!

Here's the linky-link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=My2uSnUJqKc&feature=g-u-u

The iTunes and MP3 links are in the video description.

Question of the Week

What was your first handheld gaming console and some of your favourite games for it? Additionally, what are your thoughts on the future of handheld gaming, especially with stiff competition from mobile and tablet platforms?

My first handheld is the atomic purple gameboy color that is in my pocket right now. Also my favorite game for it is Pokemon Gold, which is inside of it right now. I got that game when I got my gameboy.

Just switching that thing on brings back the memories.

Great episode topic guys! I've yet to hear the episode, but I can tell you now that my first handheld, as it was for many, was a Gameboy Color, when I was like 6. My first games for it were Pokemon Red, Super Mario Land 2, Warioland 3 and Game and Warch Gallery 3. I honestly think I was at the perfect age to get a gameboy and experience it's glory, and then was fortunate to be able to go through both generations of the GBA before eventually getting the OG DS and DS light. Some of the more memorable GBA games that I adore include Warioware Inc., Warioland 4, Yoshi's Island, Super Mario Land 3 and the list could go on forever. It's a real shame but I don't think standalone handheld consoles will exist in the future with IOS games and the new generation of handhelds that are basically console level games that just don't feel like handheld games and lack the charm of them. I will sure miss the simpler time when I could pick up a simplistic yet addicting GB or GBA game and be enamored by it for months on end. The charm of these games still amaze me to this day.

hahaha I knew I'd be getting to you since you haven't delved into Pokemon. xD

In truth, Pokemon got me into handheld gaming with Pokemon Red on the gameboy, and it has become the quintessential game to own on any Nintendo handheld. Second favorite game is definitely Tetris, which was what the hardware was originally bundled with, which is a timeless game I still play time and time again.

You should give Pokemon Black a try man.

My first handheld was the Gameboy, Pokemon Red and Yellow are my two favs as far as the future, it should still thrive, considering the handhelds like the 3DS and Vita have games that you don't get on tablet devices like the Ipad, while the Ipad games are far cheaper, they don't have the big titles you get on the 3DS for example

I cant believe andsy hasn't watched Blackadder you need to watch it asap i also agree totally with Browland about the series order of 2,3,4, and then 1. The first series while very good has a completely different feel to the other 3 and could be off-putting if its the first one you watch.

Also andsy if you've not watched these sitcoms you should if you get the chance

Listened to a bit already but will answer the QOTW and get 50 mentions in the podcast as always! :P My first handheld was the original Gameboy and I don't really remember playing a whole lot of games for it then and the first handheld I really played a lot of was the GBA. My favourite game for the Game Boy is Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. Great handheld platformer! In regards to the GBA, some of my favourite games there are Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga, Wario Ware Inc, Metroid Fusion, Zelda: ALTTP port, Castlevania games etc!

In regards to the future, it is difficult to say what is going to happen but the proper handhelds like what Nintendo does are not as popular as they were back 5+ years ago because of the rise of the app market on the mobile/handheld devices. There are people like you and me who will still enjoy the full-fledged games on Nintendo & Sony devices but some of us also enjoy the little time-wasters we see on the iOS & android devices etc. I just hope we get the best of both worlds and both sides still exist 5-10 years down the line!

My first handheld console was the gameboy advance. My favourite game on it was pokemon leafgreen, which is THE BEST starting point for anyone looking to get into Pokemon - Ben. Forget about what that fool Andy said, listen to me.

As for the future of handhelds? They will continue to do just fine as long as I am around to buy up every console ever made. I will single-handidly keep this god-damn platform afloat no matter what it takes!

My first handheld was the GBA and the only game i relly played was Super Mario Advanced 2, Super Mario Bros 3.
But then the GBA with that game was stolen and now i have a GBA again but i still need to get that game.

I think the future of handheld gaming will be the same as it is now, at least to a point.
Younger kids (around like age 6,7,8) wont get ipods or iphones and nintendo can keep up ds's and so on.
I also think most devolpers will switch to iphone games but look at square enix, they wont be selling that many games on ios so we can bank on at least them keeping up physical copys. So if i can get my 4ds-g9 in 20 years with just rpgs ill get it, anything to get away from digital.

Great episode guys! Loved that it lasted 3 1/2 hours.

As for the question of the week. The first handheld system i had was the big fat gray gameboy, which i just found last week after cleaning out the attic but it was put away for years with the batteries left in it so it is now junk. As for my favorite games on it they are Super Mario Land, Pokemon Blue, and Elevator Action. As what i think the future of handheld gaming is that we are at the end of the traditional handhelds with the Vita being the last one that Sony will put out and with Nintendo i think that they could get away with releasing one more version of the 3ds but nothing after that.

And Ben i could not believe that you liked Bart vs. the Juggernauts it was hard as hell and could never get passed the second level.

Great episode guys!

My first handheld was a Teal Gameboy Color, and of course I played Pokemon Red & Blue to death on it. Best feature though was importing your Pokemon from those games into Pokemon Stadium on N64 and battling that way. So awesome back in the day! Titty Sprinkles.

Personally I moved to the iPad, I just have no interest in dedicated handhelds any longer. I don't really game away from home unless it's a quick iPhone/iPad game that's over in 30 seconds, and when I'm at home I'd rather play games on my big screen tv with surround sound.

I'm late on this one but my first handheld was the Atari Lynx II. I can't remember what my first game was but thinking it was Blue Lightning or Electro Cop. The AC adapter was obviously a must but I loved that system. Some of my favorite games were Zarlor Mercenary, Xenophobe & Chip's Challenge. I have a feeling the handheld thing is moving in the direction of tablets & smart phones. I guess that has its upside but I generally dont get too in to it.

I'm not very far into the episode so far, but I just reached the middle of your discussion about GamezOfWar. I'm still kind of torn myself with who is in the wrong here. Like yourself Ben, at first I thought it was fake. The only thing that made me lose faith in him was the actual response he made because there is no way in hell that that was an AlphaOmegaSin impersonation. I agree with you Ben, that the others should definitely be held in more responsibility but as GamezOfWar is more popular, it is kind of like with celebrities in how they have to be more careful with what they say. It's sad and unfair, but true. The fact that Josh took down his account so quickly is what inclines me to not believe him moreso than before, because I have a feeling if any one of us was FALSELY accused we would have kept trying to reason with everyone or we would have at least been honest if we had nothing to hide. I'll keep listening to the episode and let you know any of my other thoughts on the episode as a whole later on!

EDIT: I would recommend starting with Pokemon Platinum on the DS because it is an all around fantastic game, with the best of both worlds from Diamond and Pearl. The 4th generation seems like it would be a great generation to get started on Pokemon and I think that would be best to start on. As a Pokemon fan I personally didn't get hooked on Pokemon Black near as much as the Sinnoh region's titles! That's just my two cents.
