Release Dates : October 2011 (360 + PS3) August 2012 (PC)
Developer: From Software
Publisher: Namco Bandai
Metacritic: 89/100 (360 + PS3) 86/100 (PC)
Expansion DLC: Included in the PC version. Sold as DLC for PS3 and 360 in October 2012.

Summary (shamelessly stolen from Wikipedia):

Dark Souls (ダークソウル Dāku Souru?) is an action role-playing open world video game. Previously referred to as Project Dark, it is the spiritual successor to Demon's Souls. The game is known for its considerable difficulty, which has prompted much interest and discussion.

Gameplay consists of dungeon crawling in almost relentlessly hostile environments. The challenging nature of the game provides a foundation of achievement and reward, reinforced by penalties upon player death. Dark Souls takes place in a large and contiguous open world environment, with the player able to travel to and from areas and explore various available paths seamlessly. Bonfires are scattered throughout the world; these represent the sole areas of rest and function as checkpoints. Resting at a bonfire causes all non-boss enemies to respawn, but also refills the player's supply of estus flasks (healing items), sorceries, miracles, and pyromancies.

Death in either form results in the loss of all carried souls and humanity, both of which act as forms of currency in the world, though they are each used for different purposes. The player has one chance to recollect the souls and humanity by reaching the location of his death; failing this, the items are permanently lost.

Souls are awarded upon killing any enemy, with the amount rewarded generally being proportional to the toughness of the enemy. Humanity on the other hand is significantly rarer. It is required to switch from undead to human form or to kindle bonfires (which itself requires the player to be in human form).

Dark Souls features an online mode which is active whenever the console is connected to the internet. The online mode adds numerous dynamic interactions between the individual players, including limited co-op and player versus player, within certain conditions. Communication between players is deliberately limited. If the player is in "party chat" on the 360, the game will be set to offline mode, on the other hand, private chat between two players at a time is allowed.

The online interactions can facilitate a great amount of PvP activity. Under certain conditions, one player can invade another player's world with the goal of killing the other player.

Why should I play this game?

Dark Souls will piss you off. You will slowly battle your way through hordes of bad ass enemies, only to take a wrong turn and plummet to your death, or get within a few feet of a checkpoint, just to get ganked by an enemy lurking in the shadows. You will lose progress, you will lose alot of souls, and you will most likely cry. There are few experiences quite like Dark Souls. Not only will you be rewarded with an overwhelming sense of achievement when you finally make a small amount of progression, but along the way you'll encounter some of the best environments and enemy designs that gaming has to offer. Even without the insane difficulty level, Dark Souls is one of the most unique videogames of all time. Despite being massacred, and being stuck in the same area for months, there will always be something niggling at the back of your mind about this game. It's the ultimate backlog videogame, that every gamer needs to put their time in, and beat. Seriously, you owe it to yourself.

One thing I will say, that despite the level of difficulty, I rarely feel cheated by Dark Souls. The controls are tight, and when you finally nail your character build, you can adapt your character to play exactly how you like. Personally, I'm a high endurance kind of guy. I like to have my shield up at all times, sprinting and rolling around, taking cheap shots out from behind the shield. After a few levels, I was able to assign my souls (xp) into the states that allowed me to play the game how I wanted. It controls tightly, it responds just how I want. So every death is on me. (except the rare camera angle fuckup, but these are proper rare bro)

Official Guidebook: Amazon.com - Seriously, buy this. Some of the weapon stats were changed in a patch. But this guide is the dogs bollocks. Full of strategies, lovely drawings here and there. It's your Dark Souls bible.

Help! I'm cursed, my HP is halved, and I'm crying here dudebro!
Relax. It's not the end of the world. There are two ways of removing curses. Buy the relevant moss from the creepy bird in the aquaduct just off Firelink Shrine, or go see the guy at the foot of the Belltower, where you fought the Gargoyles. (Will update with specifics)

(To be updated with wikis and FAQs)

Dark Souls - Dork Bro's
Andsy - Stated he'd beat Dark Souls 1st Playthrough by Year End. Currently getting proper friendly (prison style) with Nito, the lovely Gravelord.
Browland1 - Stated he'd "try his best" to beat Dark Souls 1st Playthrough by year end. Currenly AWOL. Last seen crying in a dark corner, rocking quietly back and forth.
TheDonovanViper - Stated he'd 1k Dark Souls by year end. Currently AWOL. The land has remained silent. With nary a single bell toll heard.

Hall of Fame - aka - Seriously Aewsoem Dudebros
Darro - Beat Dark SOuls like a red headed stepchild. Eats the Four Kings for breakfast.
Could be wrong... but I believe MidiPour has spanked DarkSouls so hard, it's afraid of him. Again, could be wrong, but he might have gone through to NG+4?
CrazyKrafft - One tough mofo. Once ate Frampt whole. Just for shits and giggles.
OMEGAlomania - LEAVES NO MAN BEHIND. When shit hit the fan, he helped his comrade through the shit. A REAL TROOPER.

Hall of Shame - aka - Hannah Montana's Home for Little Girls who like frilly little dresses.
Reserved for those who talked the talk, but could not walk the walk. Instead, will forever be remembered as ending up as a Basilisk's Bitch.

Let me know if you guys have any info you think should be included in the OP.

So, I'm currently fighting my way through the Tomb of Giants. Well, I've done the tough part. I've wandered around the pitchblack areas, I managed to get my Skull Lantern, and I'm currently resting up in the bonfire just off the road down to Gravelord Nito. I've kindled this bonfire to give me 20 x Estus Flask +4's - and I'm struggling like hell. I did have a Lighting Spear +4 - but I was a twat and decided to debuff it, to rebuff as a Divine Spear +5(I think) - But the dmg didn't transfer well at all.

My logic was - Divine Spear, kill the Skellie Summons from Gravelord Nito, allowing me to flame him in the ass (I'm a +12 pyro, I think) - But alas, my Spear.... it merely tickles the skellies, and I quickly aggro a bunch of the bastards, and their bigger brothers. Just allowing me to get overrun, where I quickly die.

I have waited around for a summon sign to appear, both at the entrance to nito and at the bonfire, but after 2 hours of waiting last night, I grew bored... Finally wasting my last humanity as I went down and got annihilated by Nito. I know the Skelly Babies drop humanity, but its rare. I guess to stop people farming?

But... I will not give in. I want to beat Dark Souls before the DLC comes out on October 26th, failing that... by December 31st. But, with Borderlands out at the end of the week... We'll have to see!

You're towards the end of the game. I believe when i beat Dark Souls I used the lighting spear through to the end of the game.

Good luck beating it by the end of the year.

+4 Estus? Which Firekeepers have you killed you homicidal maniac? :')

What stats are you working on? I assume Vit is one of your mains since you have Estus +4, but what else? Divine weapons won't go over well if you don't have high faith, that's true enough, but the Lighting Spear doesn't scale at all. That and the Drake Sword are the most deceptively useless in the entire game imo..... but yeah you probably should have just ascended a normal spear anyway :P

Me and a friend completed it and got through NG+1 together playing pass the controller, so imo that doesn't count as me finishing it :') Going through the PC version now anyway, so I shall tell you when my first run is over. Probably won't be soon cause i'm building my first character to be a Faith/Dex main Darkmoonbro.... I might just build a second char in the end to finish it hahaha xD

You should add both the wikis to the post:

Added wikis. Will put you and Mr CrazyKrafft on the Hall of Dudebros.

But yeah, I've been told to go grab a Silver Knight Spear from Anor Londo. So, will do that shit.

Also, been given a bunch of strategies and techniques, that bitch Nito will be MINE!

As for firekeepers, I accidentally avenged the firelink shrine woman. And then accidentally CONSUMED HER SOUL.

I've beaten the game a couple of times, but not on one single build. I've made a Darkmoon Covenant Murakamo build that has access to (surprise!) Dark Moon Blade, a 2500 HP vitality gauge build that uses lightning weapons, and a toon build that has points semi-arbitrarily put into different stats so I could test out different weapons in PvP.

As you can tell, I mainly geared for PvP, but to be frank, Dark Souls is primarily focused on the PvE experience. If anyone is interested, I could give you novice-friendly information on getting started for PvP in either Demon's or Dark Souls (preferably Demon's).

I did the same thing by using the firelink shrine keeper's soul to reinforce estus flask after getting it back from Lautrec on the first playthrough! Didn't make the same mistake twice!

Think I am going to go back and try to beat NG+ with my Knight on PS3 but Four Kings are an absolute bitch! If I had someone with me, chances would improve since I can kill 2 before I bite the dust! Midipour seems to be the expert round these parts!

I'm not particularly skilled defeating bosses in Dark Souls, you're best off being carried by summoning phantoms in the case of 4 kings (which to my knowledge there is an abundance of signs at the entrance of the stage). For other bosses that you can't find signs for, it's a matter of resilience, along with trial and error, trial and error being crucial to whether you preemptively telegraph a boss' attack on repeated attempts or repeat a stage 100 times.

Pfft. If (when) I do NG+ - I'll kill that blind muppet myself.

No place in Dark Souls for the weak. You may try hiding behind bars, but I'll get you! :|

I can see the gratification of conquering a boss, but I preferred Dark Souls as a social and PvP competitive experience. :P

By the way, you talking about it is making me want to play a NG+.

Just be warned Lost Izaleth and getting there i think is the hardest part of the game but the Bed of Chaos boss is one of the easiest once you know what to do.

Man, I really liked Lost Izalith, probably one of my favorite stage in the game. Other favorites have to be Sen's Fortress, Duke's Archives and Tomb of the Giants (which I have a love/hate relationship with).

Bit of poetic justice. I joined Nito's crew, just before I ran him through... with the gravelord sword.

This sword is beef. I'm smacking bitches like it's going out of fashion. The Fire Demon thingy gave me a bit of hassle, but he fell by my mighty undead sword. THEY ALL FALL BY MY MIGHTY UNDEAD SWORD. [linkspin]
