Sooooo, I got Borderlands 2. I really like it... BUT.

Dark Souls remains at the back of my mind, nagging me. I found myself putting Borderlands 2 down after a few hours, and picking Dark Souls up again.

I've only done one run down in the archives so far, but those blue octopus bastards are gay. 800 souls each? Pffft. Might go back to Painted world and farm the Phalanx. I found the run down in the archives too long, the painted world is a awesomely quick turn around. Might need to find the extra souls ring thingy though.

That's what many people said about Dragon Age: Origins and Borderlands 1 after playing Demon's Souls. As much as they liked said games, thy often thought about and desired to play Demon's Souls. And rightfully so, after all, Borderlands was evolutionary (if even that) and Demon's Souls was revolutionary.

Not that it ultimately matters of course.

Yeah, do NG+. ;P

Since you played Dark Souls, you're not missing out on much in Demon's Souls, most of the stages and ideas were re-iterated in Dark Souls.

Notable differences in DeS to DkS:
-Probably the most interesting, there are world tendency that affects the difficulty of the game, if you die/do more bad deeds, you'll see more black phantom AI/NPCs
-Its not peer to peer, Atlus/Bandai/Sony hosts servers, so cooperative and organized play is substantially better in Demon's.
-Armor doesn't mean shit in the game, there's no such attribute as 'poise' (aside from very early on), and fast-roll is >50% (there's no DWGR, which is getting a nerf soon with the next patch)
-PvP has better chemistry/fluidity due to various meta stuff you wont give two shits about

Well, there was the storm king fight that was interesting, and some of the bosses that weren't reiterated in Dark Souls were iconic. But as far as I recall, all the stages were reiterated in some fashion, I guess you could argue Demon's Souls was more 'gothic' in theme, but that only meant Dark had more variety.

Oh, and forgot this one key thing: there's actually grinding in DeS. You see, Dark Souls gave you more souls than you really need to go against the final boss. But in Demon's, you will be significantly underleveled if you simply went through the stages without repeating them.

I actually thought that demons souls was a lot easier than dark souls. That being said i also think that dark souls is the better game.

I would disagree with the statement that the two games are essentially the same though. The only bosses that I can think of as being similar are the Dragon God and the Bed of Chaos.

DeS - DkS
Undead Parish, Burg - World 1
Catacombs, Tomb of the Giants, Demon Ruins - World 2
Duke's Archives, New Londo Ruins - World 3
Kiln of the First Flame, Northern Undead Asylum, Firelink Shrine - World 4
Blighttown - World 5

Belfry Gargoyles - Gargoyles
Gwyn, Lord of Cinder - False King Allant
Pinwheel - Fool's Idol
Great Grey Wolf Sif - Flamelurker
Moonlight Butterfly - Armor Spider
Dragon Slayer Ornstein - Penetrator

There's similarity in alot of the enemies as well, including the phalanx, dragon, undead, black knight, Crystal Lizard. And even then, DeS didn't have nearly the variety of enemies that DkS has.

Maybe some enemies are cosmetically different, but they have the same formula. But most of the stages from DeS were re-used, like it'll make you have deja vu.

Ok looking at this list I will agree on some points and disagree on others.

Just because both Boletarian Palace and Undead Parish take place in castles and include dragons does not mean they are the same thing. World 1 in Demons Souls (specifically level 2) is one of my favourite sections of the game. Crossing that bridge while dodging the relentless torrents of flame from the dragon reminded me so much of bound mods from Starcraft and the bridge drake section in Dark Souls was laughable compared to this.

Yes Stonefang Mine and the Demon Ruins are both fire themed areas. However world 2 is all close quarters cramped gameplay while the demon ruins is a vast open environment. The tomb of the giants is it's own thing with no counterpart in Demons Souls and as far as the Catacombs go, yes there are tunnels but the enemies and level design is very different from Stonefang Mine

Both the Tower of Latria and the Dukes Archives are gothic prisons with octopus faced enemies but the drop into the swamp with the screaming centipede men makes world 3 really stand out to me.

I do not even see any inkling of a connection between the parts of Dark Souls you compared to the Shrine of Storms

Yes Blighttown is the Valley of Defilement.

Yes the gargoyle fights are very similar.

While Gwyn and Allant are similar thematically the actual fights are very different. Allant is not super aggressive like Gwyn is.

Yes Pinwheel and Fools Idol are similar in concept and difficulty.

I don't see the connection between Sif and the Flamelurker other than that they are both melee bosses.

I see no connection here other than they are both bugs.

Thematically and combat wise yes very similar but Smough really added to the fight as I think the Penetrator overall was a pretty easy boss.

Yes there is a lot of similarities between the standard enemies but there is also a quite drastic change in the design of the levels. Demons Souls had quite a few instances where you could set off traps to take out large groups of enemies easily, there was a much harsher punishment for using the wrong weapons on certain types of armour.

Overall I will say that they are both amazing games and while I think that Dark Souls is more polished and better presented i still love a lot of the design choices, bosses and levels from Demon Souls and am able to recognize that they are two different games that are both worth playing and that both of them offer unique experiences.

Well done Andy for finishing Dark Souls and joining our illustrious group. I might give Demon's Souls another shot and probably will just start over since I wouldn't know where to begin with the character i currently have. I beat 3 or 4 bosses now so wasn't very far. Blighttown to me is heaven compared to what I played of the Valley of Defilement (hated that world).

OK, so I played through Dark Souls again. This time, since I'd already played through it once, was a LOT easier. This time, instead of being magic focused, I went through nearly the whole game using the Black Knight Sword +5 and focusing on strength and stamina. I ended up using a mix between the Xanthous and Smough armors as well as a +10 spider shield.

I really want to do a playthrough where I focus on using fist weapons so I can play the game like it's Final Fight.

Demons souls and Dark Souls are two distinctly different games. The both inspire the same hero journey and portray an eastern idealized version of western gothic. However, the descent into madness for each game is different. The use of colors to set the mood of each story is different. Demons souls you worked for yourself and the witch. Dark Souls flips the script. Want to work for a spider? No problem.

Now if you ask me, there is no better between the two. They play similar but the feel different. The way they play is perfection to me.

I guess I have two complete months in order to hold up my end of the deal.

Average time to 1K I've read is 80+ hours. I'll get EDF 1Ked this month and then it's on to Dark Souls, it'll probably take me around 400 hurs to 1K it :P
