On this episode, we get a little frisky as Craig, aka "tvandlust", drops by to spend a few hours chatting bollocks with us. Topics covered include Craig's various endeavours, what the future console generations might hold, the potential for another video game crash, Ben's not-so-hidden Borderlands 2 fanboyism and Andy reclaiming his manhood by beating a certain game. The usual gaming and TV show discussions round off this fine episode.

Here is the Youtube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Z4Qzq9fQFE&feature=g-u-u

As always, the MP3 and iTunes links are in the video description box.

Question of the Week:

What are your thoughts on the future of the home console market? Will the "big 3" continue going strong, or are we going to see another video game crash in the future. Tell us your thoughts and opinions below.

Just a fore-note, sorry in the delay in getting this episode out. We finished recording pretty late, and I need my beauty sleep. ;D Finished it this AM, and sent it out to the interwebs as quick as my porky little fingers would allow me :D

Craig was a busy fellow yesterday then doing 2 podcasts! Unfortunately, I stopped listening to his podcast when the hiatus happened earlier this year but might pick up on it again since I listened to that one from the start. I would like it if they had guests on though since most of the other podcasts I listen to have that.

Congratulations Andy for finally regaining your manhood and joining the illustrious league of men who have beaten Dark Souls. Ben, you're a wimp. :P

In response to the QOTW, I don't see another video game crash happening but I do see more studios shutting their doors since we have lost a few this year already including Sony Studio Liverpool/Psygnosis. It is a sign of the times where if your game doesn't do well in the sale numbers after the marketing (if any) was put into it, then closing the studio is the feasible option! This can be blamed on this generation outlasting previous ones thus it has become saturated, as people are getting tired of the same old stuff. The overkill of sequels and annual showings hasn't helped original IPs for the most part be successful! This is why you see more developers going over to the mobile market because they have a chance of being successful since games for it don't cost millions of dollars to make and a simple idea can end up being a gold mine for some. Angry Birds is the epitome of that!

I don't see the next generation being as strong in the home console front because a lot has changed since the 360 launched nearly 7 years ago with the rise of the mobile market with iOS & android devices etc but there will be always be a big market for it anyway and unfortunately, as some people don't like it including myself, physical media could cease to exist in 10 years time and will be entirely digital.

LOL, the Youtube video doesn't have our standard intro. It's the full recording where you can hear our little preamble before we start the podcast. If you wanted to hear how we talk behind the scenes, albeit for a minute, it'll be interesting to listen to.

I do see the big 3 still going strong, I don't see another console trying to jump in and compete, we will see more of the same, more Maddens, Call of Dutys, and very little New IPs at least on the console market as far as a crash, no I don't see that happening, the industry makes a lot (and that's an understatement) of money every year, the factors that caused the crash, like the over saturation of bad games, no quality control etc are non existent now. Yes we get shovelware, yes we get crap games but there is more control on what gets made than 20 years ago, so I don't see the industry crashing like it did.

I don't think we will be getting any crashes anytime soon, however I do believe we will be getting a stagnant gaming atmosphere soon. Many studios are getting shut down as their sales don't meet the quota, so the brains are deciding that they aren't needed. What we will be left with, after some time, is only the extremely popular franchises. There will be a lack of creativity and growth in the gaming industry. We will just be receiving the same games, just as the Maddens, Fifas, 2k sport titles all come out year after year with very little change. Sales will still stay up for those titles, however gamers will have to rely on extremely niche/indy games to get their fix away from Mario, Call of Duty, & other main stays. Hopefully these companies can get it together before that happens as I don't find myself looking forward to New Super Mario Bros Wii U & Me 10 :P

Sony ^

I doubt there will be a video game crash, but it will probably remain relatively the same. Microsoft seems to love Kinect and shoving Forza, Halo, Fable, and Gears down our throats. I love all of those franchises...but that's all MS has been doing exclusive wise and it's getting tiring. I'm not too interested in the Wii U outside of Zelda and Bayonetta 2 since I didn't really enjoy playing it at PAX tbh. Major kudos to Nintendo for funding a Bayonetta sequel <3

I really hope the rumors about Valve's hardware are true because ultimately what I want is something like Steam without having to sit at a computer. I still want to be able to buy physical games, but there are quite a few awesome games that show up on Steam like Amnesia, Torchlight 2, Natural Selection 2 (which was awesome at PAX) that come out in the $20-30 dollar range which probably don't have the financial backing to see a retail release, but are fun enough to compete against the $60 titles at a much cheaper price. Milf hunter.

Congrats on beating Dark Souls Andy, but fuck that game is hard. I hope the DLC has easy mode and I get a pink ribbon to wear like in Ninja Gaiden.
Great episode guys, really helps me get through the work day :)

As much as I love the show I had to cringe at the amount of Sony hate when they've been giving what gamers want. Ps plus offers a great variety of games, discounts and beta's for its cost. The OS was constantly updated to give you more options and ease of use. There is a join button that's just as simple as the MS OS. The complaints of the constant long updates have me puzzled. I never wait more than 10 minutes max. I don't understand where it takes everyone else an hour or more. Lastly Sony has giving gamers what we wanted and you guys contradicted yourselves on. Games, Sure some might not be for you but at least they've given us a lot of new ips and they said they'll support the ps3 til 2015.

The new model isn't to grasp at straws. It's just a new sku that cost's less to produce for them to turn a profit. for the same price you get a machine that offer more hdd space, runs better and doesn't consume as much power. Also the playstation did have a rough start and I laughed at the high price tag. But if you look at year to year sales. It outsold the 360 with its year head start. Bigger head start in Europe. I like the show but when lack of knowledge about a product turns to fact for you guys. It just makes me a sad panda.

Bear in mind I'm in England. The EU PSN is terrible. Absolutely terrible.

But, that's cool. We're an opinion piece, we're not laying down the facts. Glad there's someone getting their $$$ worth out of their PS3.

I still love mine, even if it just is for the Yakuza series :)

Well, can't say the 'Sony hate' wasn't unexpected, Craig is passionate about Nintendo.

Sometimes he'll derp about it, but at the end of the day, he's expressing his opinion.

What did you think of Yakuza Dead Souls?

I like PS3 but I primarily use it as a BluRay machine. Which is just fine with me since I love me some Blu :) I definitely would recommend PS PLUS since it auto updates your games at like 4am so you don't have to deal with those annoying updates, plus free games too!

Here's what I felt about Dead Souls: http://youtu.be/YQ1w629oNNc

In short, it's alright. Not the strongest game in Yakuza's lineup.

I thing they will go strong for the next gen but then after that they will try "All digitol" and im guessing some other questionable things, causing consumers to stop buy games and consoles, resulting in all of the big 3 to go bankrupt. Then in a few years time a new company will rise out of the ashes with a new system with physical media, good pricing, and care about the consumer. And in the few years of no new games i can catch up on everything i missed

Listening to the podcast and awesome to have Craig on it :)

Hopefully not and it is hard to imagine. I just hope some other company just makes a console which surprises gamers and can offer good games and good value for money. Hopefully in the future someone like SEGA could make a new system maybe with a cloud service or something.

Plus if a crash happens it might be when downloadable games are the only option and are selling at 60+ dollars...can't see majority of people accepting that.

Andy is correct in that the EU PSN store is bad especially when it comes to the PSOne and PS2 Classics lineup, which couldn't be further from the truth in that department. The NA store gets games like Suikoden, Symphony of the Night and Tomba while we get games like Disney's The Little Mermaid, Gunship and Miracle Space race and other obscure crap. Granted, it has got better though since we got Klonoa there last week but PS2 section is bogged down with absolute shite you never heard of in your life. Plus, getting charged more for games digitally doesn't help either with games like Borderlands 2 and Fifa 13 charing you £49.99 rather than the standard £39.99 you get in stores.

Just finished listening for the third time.

Question of the Week: My thoughts on the home console market for the future is that I see one of the big three companies getting out of the home console market. As of right now i can not predict which one but we will probably know in a couple years into the next generation of consoles. I do see a "crash" in the future in the way that publishers can not keep affording to be making the blockbuster titles do to the insane amount of costs it takes to make one. The perfect examples of this is Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning and L.A. Noire, those games sold a good amount of games and they could not even break even let alone make a profit. The problem with this is that we will stop seeing new ideas and just keep seeing more and more games like Call of Duty because the developers can not afford to take risks.

ANDY I do think that it is time ti get another gentleman's challenge going.

Sorry about the dislike but come on man no cat segment, what the fuck.

There will most certainly be a crash as history repeats itself. I feel like the issue is an oversaturated market and the fact that while technology is still evolving, it isn't to the extent of which it has in the past. All previous generations had major technology gaps, thereby making the transition to the "next gen" a big deal. Part of me thinks that we won't see a change like that in the future. Also, there's not alot of room for innovation these days as companies are afraid to take chances. Speaking of innovation, the Wii U really isn't innovating like it has in the past per sé. Rather, it's simply expanding upon something conceived to have worked in the past (the wii) by integrating the established idea of tablet devises. It feels more like a cool techy gimmick than an actual innovation. I can only hope developers actually make something genuine of it. As a gamer, I've found that I get excited very rarely about games coming out as of late. Lets face it, the gaming industry has transformed to a much more utilitarian and "safe" ideal than what it was in the past due to the industry's monopolization. It's becoming more and more political as well. I think one of the Big 3 is gonna get booted out of the ring eventually. Games are becoming more and more mainstream in a bad way. A lot of the new games in their respective genres just seem "been there, done that" to me. Will gaming survive as it stands? Yes. For very long? I'm not sure, but I definetly don't like where things are going. As long as the cheese is there, the mice are probably going to continue to go after it. It's simply a matter of when they will all realize that the cheese is starting to taste bad...

I liked this episode. Craig was a nice guest and I like his optimism towards the Wii U. I find that a lot of people are just so judgmental and go over in great detail what something can and can't do, in theory. I personally tend to stay in the dark about new consoles and have no idea what they can do, so honestly whatever they create up sounds great to me.

I believe a video game crash may happen. If they are closing off studios even though they are producing great games, then the gaming environment is just going to become stagnant with the same series. I don't know about anyone else but seeing New Super Mario Bros 2 for the 3DS release was extremely uninteresting. It looks like the 1st one with a new coin power up.

Big name and small name company's need to put more creativity into their games. Look at Super Mario Bros 1, 2, & 3 for the NES. They are all vastly different in game play but all great nonetheless. Instead companies these days want to rerelease the games from the past in HD or follow up with a sequel to the previous game with little difference from the prequel. I suppose it is good for a cash grab, but from an entertainment point, it's going to become stale and more people are going to drop off with each sequel that has little difference from the last one.

I am behind on podcasts, so I'm just now listening to this episode with about 40 minutes remaining. So I've listened to about 2 hours and 40 minutes so far. Great episode so far, it's awesome to see Craig as a guest since it is so rare to see him guesting or even much involved in our tight community here often. He's really got a great perspective on games, one I'm starting to inherit myself and that is that I don't play games JUST to beat them anymore. First of all, there are just too many games to play now and I, like Craig, just really want to experience as much of them as possible. Obviously it is always gratifying to complete games, but it's a HUGE time commitment, especially with video game behemoths like Skyrim and other RPGs which take tens to hundreds of hours to beat. It's insane to me how long games have become. I understand why retro games were so short back in the day now, they were just a lot more accessible. Maybe I'm alone on this.
