We are joined this week by the VintageVideoGameGeek, fellow Youtuber and co-host of the popular Hit Reset Radio podcast. On this episode, we commit what might very well be podcast suicide by discussing the games we feel are weird and overrated. Needless to say, some popular titles get thrown under the bus. Other highlights include more pee stories from Ben, Andy addressing the controversy we stirred up over Sony and the triumphant return of the cat segment. Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8G-XA-CMt90&feature=plcp The MP3 and iTunes links are in the video description box. Question of the Week What are some games that you feel are overrated? Likewise, what are some underrated gems that you feel more people should play. Sub-question, what are some of the weird games and gaming moments you can recall? Tell us about them. |

Been listening to bits of it atm but will give my full opinion soon after listening to it all at work! Sonic CD came out before Sonic 3, not after! Mr "Pain in the ass has to correct you guys" Moore is at it again! Andy is correct that Sonic 3 & Knuckles is the best Sonic game! Love playing that and getting Hyper Sonic etc. Couldn't agree more with Vintage with the Pokemon series because they're just the same game again and again but with more Pokemon to collect and to me that is tedious. Zelda: Skyward Sword I couldn't finish since I got bored with it after the 3rd dungeon. Controls were a issue at times for me so I can side with Andy on that but the whole Surface and Skyloft world was just bland as hell compared to previous Zelda games. People hate Twilight Princess but I am one of the few that loves that game and think it is better than what I played of SS. Surprised Andy didn't mention Chrono Trigger but I assumed he had that on his list if he went on since I know he hated it, which I have to respectfully disagree with. EDIT: Listend to the whole episode at work and the last hour or so at home after finishing work and thoroughly enjoyed it as always. I can see why Vintage is not fussed on current-gen stuff and I am not a big fan of the whole DLC even though I am part of the problem when I buy certain ones but not the stupid ass crap like costumes and skins etc but added content like for Borderlands. QOTW Response: Anyway will list games that I think are overrated, underrated and weird in three separate sections! You probably won't read all of these out since you'll be spending the next 10 mins on my answer alone but I wanted to be thorough and give my thoughts. Overrated GTA IV - Came out on my birthday in 2008 and was my most anticipated game of that year, came away disappointed due to boring missions and lack of variety in them and the acitivies were nowhere near as fun as the ones in GTA San Andreas and Saints Row 2 that came out later that year, which is the more fun sandbox game released in 2008. Zelda: Skyward Sword - I consider myself a Zelda fan but I had my fill of the game after finishing the 3rd dungeon and haven't gone back since. To me, the world is lifeless and bland and the controls were a bit bothersome for me at times. Assassin's Creed - I love 2 and Brotherhood but I did not finish the first one since I got bored because of the lack of mission variety and the fact the 3 cities in the game looked exactly the same in my eyes. Many people have this as their favourite one in the series but have to respectfully disagree with that. Main Pokemon series - Same old game set in a new region with more Pokemon and a few new little things here and there equals stale. Call of Duty - I used to like the Call of Duty series and still think 2 is the best one I played but when 4 came around, the innocence of the series in a way died and now we know how it is now. Bioshock - Going to get flak for this but I feel people gave this game too much praise. It had a pretty good story that took too long to get going and the gameplay was good at best. The world of Rapture is what I remember fondly from this game. Super Mario 64 - This game was great back in the day but I cannot go back to this game after playing the Galaxy games, which I love but some may consider overrated. FF XIII - Now I wouldn't say the entire FF series is overrated but I do feel people give FF XIII more credit Than it deserves especially when it comes to the story. Some people love the story in this game and I felt it took way too long to get going and it wasn't very interesting at the end of the day. XIII-2 I preferred with the whole time-travel aspect. Mario Kart 64 - People have this as their favourite in the series, which I disagree with! It is alright but has some boring tracks (Yoshi Valley is great though) but for me the superior kart racer on N64 is Diddy Kong Racing! Underrated Eternal Sonata - I never hear anyone on here and elsewhere talk about this game and to me it is a great action RPG with beautiful graphics and a terrific soundtrack comprised of Chopin & original music! Lost Odyssey - One of my favourite JRPGs this generation. Great story and the 1000 years of dreams stories are some of the most well-written, heartbreaking stuff you will come across in a video game. X-Men Origins: Wolverine - One of the better film license games. Plays a bit similar to God of War hence why I like it. Psychonauts - A game that did great in the critics department but sold terribly and is considered a cult classic. Many people do consider this game overrated but I think it is an excellent action platformer done by Tim Schafer and the Double Fine Team. Curse of Monkey Island - The first adventure game I remember playing and my all-time favourite one. Love the animation, humour and the flow of the game. Rhyming iinsults in the game is genius. Mystical Ninja series - The three games that came out here are great in my eyes with Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon on N64 being a particular favourite and Andy can vouch for that! Shenmue series - A series that pretty much has polarised opinions. Some people love it, others hate it. I am on the former side and feel it is a game ahead of its time and unfortunately stuck the nail in the Dreamcast coffin due to how much it cost to make and how poor it did in sales. I want to see a HD remake for the 2 games nonetheless. Dante's Inferno - Must be the only one I know of that likes this game. Sure it was pretty much a God of War clone but I thought it was a pretty enjoyable one at that. Granted, the 8th circle of hell part is tedious as hell but some pretty cool locations throughout. Klonoa: Door To Phanotmile - Excellent platformer on the Playstation that saw a remake on the Wii and either version is worth picking up. Also it was the first ending to a video game that made me cry. Okami - Beautiful looking game that has elements of Zelda but has some elements of its own like the celestial brush! A great game by Clover alongside God Hand & Viewtiful Joe! Trine 2 - It did well in reviews but I don't hear people talk about this game! I played through it on co-op recently and it is one of the best-looking games I have ever seen! Gameplay is super fun with the various characters. Diddy Kong Racing - The better N64 kart racer! Fun tracks, an adventure mode and enjoyable multiplayer! Mario Kart: Double Dash: My favourite in the Mario Kart series! I loved the 2 character per kart mechanic and the tracks were ace! Weird Shadows of the Damned - I am surprised Ben didn't mention this in the episode since there were part of this game that were pretty strange. You have a talking skull called Johnson who turns into a gun and is referred to as "boner" Saints Row: The Third - Game is awesome and the weirdness is a reason why. Guys in gimp masks pulling carriages, entering a virtual game world and playing old-school stuff like a text adventure and suffering lag etc equals pretty damn weird to me. No More Heroes - Some unique boss characters you fight in this pretty strange action game. Warioware & Rhythm Paradise/Heaven series - These games consist of micro & minigames respectively but both are quite quirky and weird with what some of the games within both include like mashing the a button to get the snot back up a woman's nose for example. Ouendan/Elite Beat Agents - Quirky rhythm game series on the DS that has weird stories like a Japanese guy travelling the galaxy to sell products to alien lifeforms. Asura's Wrath - This game has some of the most insane QTEs ever in a video game with what occurs on screen and it is a pretty awesome game to boot! Crypt Killer - Weird as in how bad it is with shoddy sprite graphics, hilarious voice acting and fighting mythical monsters on-rails style! Edited by Darro, Oct 6 2012, 03:09 AM.

I have a deep appreciation for abstract and unconventional games, so I'm just going to talk about some of the weirdest. I recently posted on the forums about a horror themed mini golf game on the PC called Slice 'N Hook. This is by far the weirdest game that I have ever played and a brilliant one at that. You guys might as well just youtube some gameplay since i cant even merit this game justice by simply describing it.(dirt cheap on amazon too) The whole Warioware series is completely bizarre. The Timesplitters series has a great deal of abstract moments and characters. Oh and Killer 7 is one of my all time favorite games ever and a total mindfuck from beginning to finish, but thats to be expected being that it is a Suda51 brainchild. A very interesting and surprising story and a stellar weird vibe trip hop soundtrack compliments the games surreal atmosphere, so definetly check that one out, it's fucking great! Others that come to mind include Earthworm Jim, Stretch Panic, Postal 2, God Hand, and perhaps the strangest PS1 import game ever made, LSD... This is essentially an incredibly trippy first person"dream emulator," which is exceptionally strange and genuinely fucked up from the gameplay that I have seen. Oh and definetly look into the PSP game titled "WTF.". This one is somewhat similar to and perhaps stranger than Warioware but still holds its own. I could go on for pages about bizarre games, but I bet one of you is already panting reading this by now haha. |

Ben mentioned that the next episode would have a film discussion. So I'll discuss how I felt about the documentary Dear Zachary. I felt that the film had a very nice pacing and did a good job at drawing my attention right away. I felt that the whole entire situation was devastating, but what really threw me under a bus was the end of the film, especially since the film gave the allusion that the whole intent of the film would eventually be fulfilled. And even if this wasn't initially intended, it was effectively presented, and really made me reflect on the film days after watching it. However, despite all of those, the film portrayed the ex-girlfriend as being satan's minion. Although I can sympathize why this would be the case in this film. But I don't know whether I'd consider the film a 'documentary' since I feel it set out to distinguish this absolute good and evil. It was apparent the ex-girlfriend was a victim of borderline personality disorder. Maybe the psychologist was was being negligent, maybe she was intentionally refusing her medication, maybe she suffered from trauma as a child, but it was apparent the director didn't seek this kind of stuff out. So to me, as devastating as the film is and what really happened was, the film itself is a work of fiction, similar to that of King of Kong. I have my flame shield ready for this week's QotW. I'll go into detail on one game I've noted as being robustly overrated, and it's a recent one; Borderlands. Contrary to this belief, I have to first clear up that I find the game to be highly enjoyable. However, many of people who otherwise would never play an MRPG played Borderlands. And as you guys have noted, a good majority of people put Borderlands 2 as their most anticipated game of this year. The fact of the matter is, Borderlands essentially is just an FPS with MRPG elements. If you distinguish these two components, the FPS part isn't necessarily a departure from any other FPS out there in the market. What makes it different by any stretch of the imagination is the MRPG structure, in which Borderlands flat out rehashes the MRPG aspect rather than deviating it into something of its own. Which goes in comparison to how Demon's Souls ingeniously deviated from that layout and brought a fresh experience in the same month (in NA). I think the reason why Borderlands seems fresh to alot of people is because they tend to shy away from other games similar to it, and the primary reason why is because of this misconception that an MRPG is an MMORPG. Runner Ups: Pokemon <-- No matter what I told Ben, this is an overrated POS Michael Bay 6 Metal Gear Solid Underrated: ![]() I've praised this game and criticized others for dismissing this game on several occasions. Glover is a unique and innovative platformer stifled by a steep learning curve and overall difficult-to-master stages. Unlike Borderlands, the reconciliation of ball physics and traditional 3D platforming switches up the play mechanic. I can't stress this enough, push through the game's difficulty, even it slaps you in the face earlier on. Edited by MidiPour, Oct 7 2012, 05:15 AM.

Overrated: Red Dead Redemption, LA Noire, and GTA IV. All three of those games received amazing reviews and aside from having good graphics, I thought they were all boring as hell. Cleveland steamer. Heavy Rain for me was total crap since aside from Detective Shelby I found the voice acting to be terrible, and you kinda need good acting if your game is just story and quick time events. Call of Duty Multiplayer is so annoying between the idiots on the mics, and people just camping for killstreaks that it's like getting skull fucked in the eye with a turd every time I play MW3. More people should play: Bayonetta Vanquish Binary Domain Alan Wake Yakuza Series Viking Battle For Asgard Timesplitters Series Asuras Wrath BulletStorm Nier: has the best new game plus ever since it changes the storyline in a really cool way. Weird Moments: The mission where you meet Zimos in Saints Row The Third LOL. That game was so awesome. ![]() Good show though guys Enjoy stumbling on my long answer. Totally agreed Darro, Twilight Princess is my favorite Zelda game. Edited by NinjaPenguin8969, Oct 1 2012, 11:34 PM.

I'm currently working through this week's episode but I just had to answer the question of the week now. Underrated games that people should play: definitely Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage for the 360 or PS3. I posted about it in the underrated current gen gems, here is what I posted: It's a game based on Fist of the North Star anime and delivers greatly. You go around making people explode with your fists, what could be more awesome. It's a modern day beat em up and it's very well done. The anime is a classic and the storyline is great. It has a lot of metal/rock for the soundtrack, mostly really in your face music and really adds to the, destroy everyone with your bare hands, awesome feeling. I've put over 40hrs into it and still have a few other missions to go. I'm not sure if I'll be able to put it down once I completed everything, I would have to say it's one of my favorite games of this Gen. I would actually recommend that Andy plays it. I just have a very strong feeling that he'll like it. It's pretty cheap too, $20 or less these days. |

Great episode guys. Thank god y'all had the cat segment again, did not want to give you another thumbs down. Face it the cat segment is now a part of the podcast just like the question of the week and games you've been playing. I think Ben has a secret Golden Shower fetish as it seems that he is always peeing on stuff, first homeless people and now cats. Question of the Week: Games that are Overrated: Grand Theft Auto 4: A game that took itself way too serious, was not as fun as 3, Vice City, or San Andreas in the fact that really none of the missions were crazy fun. Super Mario 64: One of those games that was great back in the day but does not hold up anymore and the way people talk about it makes it seem like the best Mario game ever. Zelda: Ocarina of Time: One of games that i could never really get into after a Link to the Past which is my favorite Zelda Game. Red Dead Redemption: Looks great, plays great, just boring as all hell with all of traveling that takes forever to get from one place to the next. Call of Duty: Do i really need to explain this. Underrated: Legend of Dragoon: One of those games that time forgot. Still holds up today with the battle system that makes you press buttons at exact times to make the hit. Lost Odyssey: One of the last great JRPG's on the modern consoles. Has a great story, great visuals. The only bad part was the whole four discs on the 360. What final fantasy 12 should have been. Deadly Premonition: Had to put this on here to get back on Andy's good side after the thumbs down last week. Weird: No More Hero's: You jack off the Wii controller to play this game. Shadows of the Damned: Love the sense of humor in the games. Come on you have a sidkick named Johnson and he turns in the "big boner" Edited by crazykrafft, Oct 1 2012, 01:44 PM.

Flame shield up and zero fucks will be given if you hate my opinion. Games I think are overrated and it doesn't mean they are bad but I think are over hyped and I have played, so games like Final Fantasy 7 won't be addressed GTA 3 I think this game isn't as good as people say it is. Vice City and San Andreas are far better in my opinion. I cared more about the main character in those games than 3. GTA 4 isn't over rated in my opinion, but San Andreas is my favorite in the series. I thought it had the best story, the best gameplay and best setting, plus who doesn't love beating people up with a giant purple dildo? Ocarina of Time (and I know I'm gonna get flamed for this one from a fellow User) I don't think it should be on the high pedestal it is by gamers. Games I feel that are highly underrated are Duke Nukem Forever, people bashed this game and it's not a bad game, it's Duke Nukem for fucks sake! It's not meant to be a Call of Duty or Battlefield. Brutal Legend: Probably one of the best games I have played this generation. It's an absolute gem on the PS3 or 360. With an awesome soundtrack to boot. Tony Hawks Ride this game is not as bad as people think it is, I honestly had fun using the skateboard controller, it's hard for sure but a fun game in short bursts. I would have to agree with Ben. Mario 3 was overrated, It's still a great game but I find myself leaning towards Mario 2 as well. I feel the Killer Instinct series is overrated. I feel they aren't the masterpieces the internet makes it to be. Replay them now and see if they hold up to greats like king of fighters and street fighter. Underrated - 3D dot game heroes. It's the Zelda game that Nintendo should've made. I highly recommend everyone to try it if you enjoy the traditional top down Zelda games. Weird- The Mario series in general. First of all, the princess is too stupid to beef up her security and constantly gets kidnapped. Bowser sends his koopa kids who are extremely young after Mario to get killed. After all this kidnapping and killing of koopas, goombas and ghosts. They all go out and play tennis or golf after. |

Good Episode. Although the PS3 hate is really unfair, since neither MS or Nintendo are putting out exclusives as regularly as Sony. You may not like the games, but at least they are there. I was not a big fan of Twisted Metal or Starhawk, but Journey, Sound Shapes and Tokyo Jungle are pretty awesome. And now for the question... Overrated: Chrono Trigger - Every element of the game is solid, except for the pretty basic story and characters. GTA series- It’s fun for a couple of hours, but that’s it. Persona 3 - The whole school life thing doesn’t appeal to me at all. Killzone series - I like the first one, but the rest is just bland. Underrated: Yoyo’s Puzzle Park - Very japanese, but it’s a really fun and quirky game for the PS1 (also on the weird side). Shadow Hearts 1 and 2 - Amazing RPGs, with a refreshing take on the genre. Sega Soccer Slam - Played this game with friends all the time on the good old GameCube. Mad Maestro! - Absolutely love it. The gameplay is so simple but I can play this for hours. Weird: Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan - I can understand why they released Elite Beat Agents in the west instead. Mr Moskeeto - You want me to play as the most annoying insect in existence? Kula World - You’re a beach ball that defies gravity and eats fruit. Seaman - A fish with a human face…. What the heck!? Edited by Redix, Oct 2 2012, 07:56 PM.

First off- Red Dead Redemption is awesome. Sure, the story is a bit cliche, but coming from someone who actually is going to college for American History, the game is downright fascinating and intriguing. And documents a really unique time in American History, the dying days of the old west. As for Fallout 3. Fallout 3 is kind-of overrated. I've logged over 800 hours into it and gotten the Platinum trophy, however people praise it on end as the the best WRPG of all time (which is incorrect) but it is super amazing. Fallout: New Vegas is by far a superior game, I've put over 1,300 hours into it, again got the platinum. After playing New Vegas, and having a lot of the original Black Isle staff working on the game, made me appreciate the original games, which I hadn't played. Last comment on the previous episode. You haven't played a perfect game? Clearly you've never played Half-Life 2. Never has a game been so well crafted to perfection. Not a single flaw in that game (well, except that it ended). Sonic 3 & Knuckles is the most overrated game to me. People claim it to be the pinnacle of Sonic, yet it isn't even the best Genesis Sonic game (which is the original). Terrible level design, music, just a bad game all around. Sonic Adventure is the BEST Sonic game. Amazing soundtrack. Awesome and memorable levels. Sure Big's Fishing sucks, but other than that it's perfect. Sonic Adventure hate has gotten so massive the game is now underrated in my opinion. Sounds like someone is hating just to hate. Another overrated game is StarFox 64. It's not bad, but it's just not as excellent as people make it out to be especially the inability to save between levels. An underrated game would be Star Fox Command for the DS. A pretty cool and unique addition to the Star Fox franchise. It's got decent 3D graphics for the DS, good touch controls (surprisingly), and different branching paths. I need to pick it up again!
