Episode 27 - Zero F*cks Were Given; Featuring VintageVideoGameGeek

We are joined this week by the VintageVideoGameGeek, fellow Youtuber and co-host of the popular Hit Reset Radio podcast. On this episode, we commit what might very well be podcast suicide by discussing the games we feel are weird and overrated. Needless to say, some popular titles get thrown under the bus. Other highlights include more pee stories from Ben, Andy addressing the controversy we stirred up over Sony and the triumphant return of the cat segment.

Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8G-XA-CMt90&feature=plcp

The MP3 and iTunes links are in the video description box.

Question of the Week

What are some games that you feel are overrated? Likewise, what are some underrated gems that you feel more people should play. Sub-question, what are some of the weird games and gaming moments you can recall? Tell us about them.

First off-
Red Dead Redemption is awesome.
Sure, the story is a bit cliche, but coming from someone who actually is going to college for American History, the game is downright fascinating and intriguing. And documents a really unique time in American History, the dying days of the old west.
Agreed. If you haven't seen Once Upon A Time In The West I highly recommend doing so. It inspired the game in more ways than one ;)

That being said I agree with the consensus regarding Rock Star games. Not sure if I would say overrated, but I can't focus and ultimately don't care in GTA. The only Rock Star games I've completed were both Red Deads and The Warriors.

Really, I think that Ocarina of Time is overrated. Its better on the 3ds, but not 11/10 zomg perfect that people think it is. It really has camera issues for sure.

An underrated game I'd think is a NES game called Low G Man. its a pretty cool sidescroller game where your gun only freezes the robots, from there, you have to jump on them and stab them with an extending spear weapon. there are sub weapons that you can get ammo for, and switch to them with the select button, like boomerangs, fireballs and etc. Everything is pretty much upgradable, from your jump height and spear length to the sub weapons. It, unlike most other NES games runs in 30FPS, which is a bit choppy for a NES game, but it won't slow down with tons of sprites and the sprites won't clip out when there is like 5 on a line. It is a very underrated game.

One of the most Overrated games i think is Shadow of the Colossus, when it came out no one give a damn about it, suddenly the community made it known, and now everyone is like "WOW BEST GAME EVEEEER", or is just that i dont get it, sometimes i think its just like the cool game to say you like, like a pretty obscure book or something like that, i find it quite boring riding your horse doing nothing but to look for a colossus killing and repeat.

As for underated games, it came to my mind two games for the NES, one is Kicle Cubicle, its a puzzle game of a little guy who is on an ice island and freezes enemies and push them to the water to make a path to reach for some bags, i know it sounds ... weird but its a great puzzle game, and the other one i think is called Shadow of the Ninja is a plattaformer, very much like ninja gaiden but with its own identity, its not a great game but you should at least check it out

I think one of the most overrated games of all time is Final Fantasy 7. There are definitely older games in the series that hold up way better like FF3 and 5. 7, to me, is pretty much unplayable because of its bad graphics and weird area layouts.

That being said, two of my favorite and in my opinion most underrated games are Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy XII. The reason I like FFX so much is that it is a very linear game but the areas feel very open. You always have one way to get everywhere in the game, but it doesn't feel that way. As far as XII goes, it is the best action RPG I've ever played. They just did the battle system right.

Final Fantasy X-2 is fucking garbage though.

Anyway, the podcast is awesome keep up the good work!

Most overrated game of all time is Skyrim because that game had so much hype and pretty much was the same as oblivion. Except that it had a more basic level up system that created a lack of individuality and re playability. The open world made it possible to sit for hours and not play the "game" or main quest, but still feel as if a player is progressing because they are doing task they can justify as being meaningful because their character is getting stronger. The game did not pull a player along at all. Overrated open world RPG.

as for "Most Underrated game of all time" I agree with stemnails it is Final Fantasy 10 it is a game that I have recently replayed and it is just as great the 10th time as the first time you play it. I feel it is underrated not just as a final fantasy game, but rather a game in general. It had a liner plot, which is refreshing from RPGs these days. I am sick of open world RPGs where grinding is not only done but rather expected and needed most times. By the time Final Fantasy 10 becomes close to an open world game you are so vested in the story mode that you stay with the plot. Except for Blitz Ball, which you can waste some serious hours playing.

Overrated: I really just don't think the Nintendo DS is that exciting of a handheld. I've owned two of them now (one at launch...then traded away later, and then re-purchased when the Lite was released only to sit in a drawer after a few months) and I just don't play it that often. It must just not be the handheld for me...

Underrated: I've done entire YouTube videos on Forgotten Gems...but I'll just say one: Time Splitters: Future Perfect. The wacky storyline, very good FPS shooting mechanics, varied locations, multiplayer unlockables, crazy mini games and more. Why we don't have a Time Splitters 4 is beyond me!

Weird games and gaming moments: The ending to House of the Dead: Overkill... **spoiler alert** When the main boss/bad guy crawls back up into his momma's... um... whoa. OK. Did that REALLY just happen in a video game?!? WTF!

I feel so many games this generation are overrated, when i was looking to buy a ps3 i asked friends that had a ps3 what ps3 exlusive games i should get and 90% of them said uncharted 3, and when i said anything eles they said either uncharted 2 or call of duty balck opps. I think the unchared games are good but they are given too much credit. there are also games within the gameing community that everyone knows of but people keep calling "underrated" and i would classify those as overrated, such as muramasa and zack and wiki. I dont think they are bad games, i enjoy them but i feel they are too talked about.
But there are also games the are way too overrated and i hate. such as Nier, yakuza, xenoblade chronicals, the warriors, deadly preminition, streets of rage 2 and god hand. Those games are absolutly terrible :)

Great episode guys, Vintage was a fantastic guest and amdsy was on fricken fire taking no prisoners! Ben, your pissing on the cat story...in think i love you.

Over-rated:

Gears of War is so damn boring to me, i get about half an hour in and i just want to sleep!
Metal Gear Solid 4 isnt even close to a 10/10, its not even close to Snake eater in my opinion.
The whole Zelda franchise is waaaaaay over-rated, everything since A Link to the Past has been alright but nothing to write home about.
Chrono Trigger is good, but its not the best RPG out there. I'd take fallout 2 for end of the world scenario's and awesome characters anyday. Cant shoot anyone in the balls in Chrono Trigger...

Under-Rated:

Streets of Rage Series, the Nintendo crowd seem to sweep it under the carpet like it never happened but they know in thier hearts that it beats the crap out of any other beat 'em up.
Toejam & Earl 2: Panic on Funkatron, one of the brightest, sexiest and funkiest games ever made. Yet it get slated as an average platformer...just the view of a half-assed playthrough.
James Pond 2: Robocod. Great platformer with a lot of humour behind it, best on the amiga but the Megadrive version is a solid port. Best played at Christmas though.
The Sega Mickey Mouse/Disney games. Everyone waxes lyrical about the Capcom Disney games on the NES but then only briefly talk about the Sega titles. I get that nostalgia takes high
presidence in love for old games, but just because you never experienced the superior quality of the Sega games doesnt mean you can just casually overlook them as alright titles.

The Master System version of Castle of Illusion is one of my fav games ever made, but all of them are so much fun and really deserve some time put into them.
