This week, the rascals welcome veteran Youtuber, podcaster and sporter of the finest moustache in the gaming community, Anthony aka. MagusX1. We delve into Magus' various endeavours over the years, answer your lengthy responses from last week's question and have a lively chat about video game piracy and emulation. As expected, we continue to derail legitimate topics with penis jokes. In other words, it's business as usual in the Rad Rascals camp.

Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HBIA3eGq9w&feature=g-u-u

As always, the iTunes and MP3 links are in the video description box :)

Question of the Week

What are you thoughts on emulation and ROMs? Is it an acceptable practice that helps keep old games alive, or is it piracy that takes money from the game companies. Tell us about your experiences with video game emulation.

I introduced Anthony to the podcast via a DM session on twitter a few months back so glad to see you had him on and he enjoys it!

I can assure Andy that Bioshock was not too intelligent for me hence why I think it is overrated. Maybe it is because I was really looking forward to that game too much and just ended up disappointed and feel the game gets a bit too much praise! It's a great game mainly for the world and the characters! Thanks for reading out all the games, kept adding some over the last week. Was plenty more like the Platinum games I could have mentioned but I knew someone else would mention! Some of the responses were great though!

Ben, for future reference it is pronounced as "Oh-en-Dan" and not "ounion"!

In response to the QOTW: I'll agree with what Magus said! I am not one of those ones who would say that emulation and ROMs are purely bad because it is the only way in some cases to play older games that would cost you an arm and a leg otherwise to play! Games like Earthbound, Castlevania: Vampire's Kiss/Dracula X, Panzer Dragoon Saga (if there is a decent Saturn emulator nowadays) etc cost a pretty penny and would be easier to play via emulation and see if it is worth owning an original copy! People tend to use MAME for arcade games, which I have no problem with! Only way to play games like Tumblepop after all! I used to partake in emulation and ROMs on the PC etc but not anymore because I used it to play games that I used to have like the DKC series but I now have those games in my collection again!

Piracy is wrong but unfortunately, not ashamed to say that I dealt with pirated games (and other media like music, movies etc). Back in the late 90s and early 2000s, I had copied PS1 & Dreamcast games by using the CD swap method with the cheat device so didn't properly mod my console! I couldn't afford all the new games thus resorted to paying £5 for a copy of Sonic Adventure 2 at the local town market for example! I have thrown most of them out but kept a few like Skies of Arcadia, Sword of the Berserk etc so still naughty in that way! But pirating new games nowadays is completely stupid considering the fact that most game prices tend to go down a lot quicker than they did before (bar 1st party Nintendo stuff of course) thus you can get them at affordable prices!

I think emulation of older games is fine since no one's job hangs in the balance since those games already made their profits, and some games just aren't widely available anymore. However, people who pirate newly released games are sponges who can choke on Ron Jeremy's cock for all I care. Based on my experience I just don't buy into the notion of I'm stealing this game to support it eventually. Some of my friends stole Mass Effect 3 days before release with that same excuse and still never gave Bioware any money to this day. With so many game studios closing down lately I just think people who do that are pricks, and I think if you can't afford the game then you don't get it until you can afford it or it drops in price (unless you're renting). Don't be a flaming douche nozzle, show some support for the people who create the experiences that we enjoy so much. Thunder-Cunt.

Good to see Magus on! Miss Gamer Horizon, and the gamesandme podcast he had but his opinion about Rare is factually incorrect... ;)

And yes Andy, Patty Mayo is from Doug. I'm glad there's at least one person who noticed that sheesh :p 90s Nickelodeon ftw!

I've played my fair share of ROMs and I'm glad I did. Before this generation started it was the only way for us Europeans to play gems like Super Mario RPG or Xenogears. We missed out on a ton of awesome RPGs from the SNES and PS1 days and I couldn't afford to buy american consoles and all the original games.
However, I've been buying most of those classics on WiiWare and PSN recently and I'm more than happy to support the developers.

Also, there are tons of great games that never get a release outside of Japan. If it weren't for the fan translations most of us would probably never play games like Mother 3 or Policenauts.

My thoughts on Emulators and ROMs, I'm fine with them, they are a great way to play games that are really expensive, like Earthbound and Hagane on the SNES. they are a great way to record footage for reviews, a great option to play unreleased games, rom hacks. I don't think it takes money from game companies. Because anything past the PS1 era is hard to emulate right now. Even Sega Saturn Emulators don't work that well.

I will not use emulators. I am completly against them. I dont care if a game is $10,000, if i relly want it ill buy a repo and dont play it at all. Im not a fan of mame and dont use it but thats the one thing i turn a blind eye to when others use since i dont think anyone, exluding jumble junkie, can play arcade games in real life.
And when it comes to modern stuff, its even worse, i know buy the game used dosnt give the devolper any money but the way i look at it is that at least at one point in time the devolper did get money and now someone eles is. I cant stand divices such as the r4, *cough* *cough* sinistermoon *cough* *cough*, and how they are striaght up stealing the game.
And and see moded wii's on craigslist all the time with either 2700 retro games or 60 modern games on a hard drive. And ds 200-in-1 cartridges can be bought easyly off ebay.
You want to experince chrono trigger, buy it off ebay, either spend the $50 or $20 (depending on the version.) bucks or just dont get it. If i want a trial of a game ill watch a youtube gameplay video and see if it looks and and then chose from there if i want to get the game.
I tried to use an emulator to play mother 3 since it wasnt released in america but i could last 30 minutes before i deleted it, i need the physical copy.
The closet thing to emulation i use is the 60-in-1 arcade board
So if you want to play you terrible god hand ( :) andy) then buy it and dont just mod your ps2

For anyone who lived or visited a country which didn't have copyright regulations, you probably had the same experience as me. I don't know what the exact laws were, but the worth of a game in Iran was the value of a burnt CD (roughly around 2$). For a bootleg Game Boy game, it was 10$. I own a legit looking emulation disc that has 1000 previous gen games (It goes up until early N64), played burnt PSX games purely using Bleem!, had a moded PS2/360 which respectively I've owned 100's of games for. As you can tell, I'm a mass exploiter, but I was sort of oblivious towards pirated games during my childhood. Because of this situation, I've been pretty apathetic on the topic, but I do and have bought many North American retail games. I think what it really comes down to is whether I want the game's North American packaging or whether want to support the developer. In terms of abiding by some abitrary principle, it's apparent I do not.

Great episode guys. Andy you ruined Streets of Rage 2 for me after saying you wake up with it.

Question of the week:
My thoughts on emulation is that it has its place in gaming and entertainment with that it is a good way to keep games alive that are no longer unobtainable due to rarity or localization. For me it is okay if you do it with older games because the companies are no longer making any money off it if they don't have ports of it somewhere else. But as for newer games i think that it is a shame that people would rather have ROMS of a game rather than the physical copy because the developers are putting there heart and souls in these games and you are basically stealing their games. The only way that i have done emulation is that i have an old xbox that is modded to play all nes and snes games on it but i have not played it in years because it ruins the experience for me in the way that it is too easily for me to get them and the game just doesn't feel right when it plays.

By the way how come no cat segment guys.

hey guys great episode again, a big thank you to ben for getting me a link to download it from youtube, i must be the only person who dont use itunes.

anyway for the question of the week, i think its a personal choice if you feel comfortable with piracy/roms etc. i think what some people got to remember though is their are downloading roms from the virtual console, xbox live and psn. i think mame is a great form of emulation as there are a ton of games that would be dead now if it was not for mame. games like willow the arcade game, cadalacs and dinosaurs, toki the arcade version. these games are awesome and its great we still get a chance to play them these days. also i haven't got an endless amount of money i can spend on games for things like sega, nintendo emulators are perfect for me. i would not use piracy for current gen though. also as for used games, i got 2 kids so would not be able to play alot of the current gen games if it wasnt for the used market.

thanks steve

Just wanted to say that this is easily one of my favorite podcasts (I listen to between 15 and 20 on a regular basis). Keep up the great work.

As for the QotW: Personally, I find it only acceptable to emulate games that aren't accessible by reasonable terms ( let's say they're out of production). But modern games are another story. If you'd like to test the waters before buying a game, you should rent it, not pirate. It's a fact that games are cheaper now than they ever have been (based on inflation rates), so if you can't afford them now, you're priorities should be elsewhere... like say, getting another job... anyway. If that's not an option, then sacrifices must be made. Maybe you can't play the latest AAA game. That's not the developers problem, rather, it's your own. You aren't entitled to play every game that you want. You're entitled to play any game that you can afford. Pirating a game is stealing. The only reason I find emulation acceptable is because they're currently out of print, meaning that the developers/publishers no longer make money from the game's sales.

If you can't afford the latest and greatest, have patience because it'll drop in price or find a way to make the money to pay for what you want. What pirates consider "free", I consider "theft".

I use roms to choose what NES games I want to purchase. It really has no effects on the companies anymore whether I buy a used cart from the 80s or not. I don't do that with modern games and whatever.

I also like emulating the atari 2600, You can find some oddities that you wouldn't have found otherwise.

Being completly honest i have to say i have used emulators a lot but only because i didnt have enough money to buy originals and i did it when the consoles werent available anymore for example, when the game cube, ps2 and xbox were the current consoles i played a lot of SNES and ps1 games on my computer.

However when i was finally able to get the consoles for myself and buy some games, i stopped that, i mean i have a wii and a ps3 right now, and i dont have a single pirated game, altough it would be something rather convinient, here in mexico new games are 1000 pesos, and a pirate copy of a game cost like 60 pesos only, something la 4.5 dollars or so.

My take on it is that people who use emulators or pirated copies is people who is not going to buy an original game anyway because they can afford it,once you can afford a console on your own and games, you mostly will buy originals just to keep your console safe and have something "pretty" to display on your wall.

Lastly i dont see anything wrong playing old games on emulators, companies arent making any money with those old games right now

It really depends on the game, a lot of games are either available on Nintendo Virtual Console, Xbox Live Arcade and the Playstation Network so you can't say they aren't making money off the old games

I for one enjoy having a snes emulator cause I discover a lot of jrpgs that I never knew about such as the remake of Dragonquest I&II which still hasn't seen a translation of any kind. I also find that thanks to emulators I find games that I never heard of and end up falling in love with them only to find myself adding another game to my wish list. I will say I would rather play the physical copies of the games than the emulator. It also saddens me to say that there are psp games that I have pirated such as Grand Knights History, Sol Trigger, and Shining Blade to name a few. I wish these game would get a release outside of Japan cause there are some amazing jrpgs that few people outside of Japan know about.
So the only options are either pay a lot of money for a untranslated game or download a free copy that has some translation.

First off comments on the episode-

Glad you guys enjoyed my post for last week. I had fun riling some feathers. I agree with the statements on Mario Kart Wii, its by far the worst, in my opinion- and Mario Kart 7 surprised me a lot- I logged a ton of hours into that. I did actually the first three Fallout games (1, 2, Tactics) from GOG but haven't gotten around to playing them yet. ...and... since everyone has opinion on Final Fantasy games, my favorite is the first game. I lost all of my interest in the series once they started having all these characters with long drawn out stories and quests. I loved being four people, who have little story, say nothing, but just go around and kicks all kinds of ass.

I agree with MetalJesus that the DS is overrated. I own about 5 games for it. Pokemon White, Pokemon White 2, Pokemon HeartGold, Pokemon Platinum. And I feel to fix the FPS game genre- we need Half-Life 3 to releases. Everyone will drop whatever they are doing to play that. Please GabeN. Release the damn game already its been 8 years since Half-Life 2 and 5 years since the last episodic expansion. Another opinion of mine I think Twilight Princess (GameCube version) is the best Zelda game. Not the version. The Wii version is trash :)

Now onto the question-
I'm one of those people who have pirated tons of retro games to try before I buy. Right now I have a CD wallet full of Dreamcast games on CD-Rs. I throw out games I dislike, and keep ones I do like until I buy a retail copy. Once I buy a retail copy I throw the pirate disc in the trash. Of course, since I plan on owning a complete NTSC Dreamcast collection, I have to buy them all eventually. Though the Dreamcast is the only system I've ever pirated on which I didn't even do until 2011, well after anyone was making any kind of profit from it.

Emulation I have few problems with. Again I use it as a try and buy for retro games. If I like something, I'll go buy it either on the original system/virtual console/online service/compilation disc or what have you.

The attacking of the used game market is rather silly. You guys summed it up perfectly. I can buy, sell, and trade my cds, dvds, cars, houses, dogs, cats, and piles of crap. So why not video games?
It's an absolute lark.
