Episode 31 - Curate or Masturbate?; Featuring StephsTooDef

This week, we are joined by Stephanie, aka. StepsTooDef, long-time Youtuber and gamer extraordinaire. The key topic this week is gamer sentimentality, and we discuss our passion for gaming, how our collecting habits have changed over the years and what gaming really means to us. If you're thinking that such an introspective means that we're putting on a clean and proper show, you're wrong. The usual tangents, foul humour and other oddities inevitably find their want into the discussion.

Here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U53X1OTBWQs&feature=g-u-u

As always, the iTunes and MP3 download links are in the video description.

Question of the Week

Do you have a collection (gaming or otherwise) that you've ever had to sell off or downsize? What circumstances would compel you to get ride of some (or all) of your collection?

Cool, I dot think many people answered the episode question since they didn't want to open their inner fears as phobias

Andy, I'm going to kill you for using the Picture of Dorian Gray painting as the picture card on the YouTube page! ;) Thankfully you didn't use the other one as well!

Looking forward to hearing Steph on the podcast! Probably would have listened to some yesterday if I wasn't at the Distant Worlds: FF concert, which was awesome! Cheap plug but hear about that on the next United Gamedom episode!

As for the question of the week: There hasn't been a time (for now) where I had to sell or downsize my collection except when I had to throw out a bunch of old Sonic The Comics (UK version) I used to get back in the early to mid 90s! I have a pretty sizeable Gamesmaster magazine collection (at least 150 issues from the 250+ they've done) and will not get rid of that anytime soon! I only just traded games here and there to get new games etc but only threw out the games for consoles that broke on me like the NES & Mega Drive back in the 90s but nothing hugely significant!

If I was in financial woes due to losing my job or somewhat and couldn't get one anytime soon afterwards, I would have to start getting rid of my gaming and DVD collection in order to pay for the bills but there will come a time where those will run out! I know people have to do this here in order to make a living and don't blame them for doing so!

The only thing I've ever really sold was all my sega genesis stuff. For some reason, besides sonic and streets of rage, I could not play that console, it just didn't fly with me for some reason. So I decided to ditch that and get a N64 instead. I like the N64 a lot more, and I hardly played the genesis anyway.

great episode guys, for the q of the week, im gutted to say that ive sold off my master system collection and mega drive collection over the years, this was to help towards buying our house, and getting baby stuff for the kids a few years ago. i have got the games on emulators but it aint the same, but i have responsibilities so cant moan....to much. for my current gen collections they are not that big as i normally trade games in now to get the next new hit i want, so at least im getting to play the games i want. only games i know i will def play again are the games i keep.

I'm very happy that we were able to educate Stephanie about the art of Blumpkins. You're welcome. :) Hoping to finish the episode tomorrow.

Years ago, I sold my original vintage Kenner Star Wars action figure collection... for $100 total (it was probably worth 10 times that) when I was young & stupid and I've regretted every since. The funny thing I can't remember what was so damn important that I needed $100 at the time, so it clearly wasn't worth it!

I just recently sold off part of my gaming collection. I recently had a concussion and piled up some medical bills. Now I can only work half of the hours I used to so I had a decision to make. With all priorities taken care of I have no spare income to buy newer titles so I sold off titles I haven't touched in some time or games I did not play growing up. Now I was able to per order newer titles coming up such as halo 4 and black ops 2. I'm happy with the decision I made because for some reason I appreciate the titles still in my collection more and I can't wait to enjoy some new realeases. Love the podcast guys. I work midnights as a security guard and your 3 hour long podcast keep me entertained for part of my shift and keeps me vigilant.

Luckily I have remained financially stable and was never forced to sell off my games out of necessity. I did sell off the majority of my Xbox and GC collection when the 360 came out to buy new games. Airtight ski pole. if I lost my job then I would sell off my collection in a heart beat to pay the rent. At the end of the day it's a hobby not a necessity.

Good episode guys. This, Video Game Outsiders, and CagCast are my three must listen to podcasts throughout the week.

Hi ive been enjoying your stuff since this summer, great to hear you rumbling while working

Now for this week Q

Seven years ago i had to sell a big chunk of my collection in part to pay for my wedding and other stuff. At the time i had around 900 games and it went down to my top 100.
I took me a few years to get the collecting bug again, but then it kicked real hard...in 2 years or so i bought over 2500 games.

With all those crazy youtube collectors and DP i kind of loose focus of what should be a real collection: Stuff that have a meaning to you
Then i starded to get rid of all these NHL and NBA unecessary sports game and other filler. It went from 2500 to 2100. For almost a year now ive sold-traded around 800 more games and worked hard to improve the quality of my collection.

Im proud of my collection but not necessarly of the material part of it, for me its more about the memories of playing, the hard work and fun to hunt, ect
If i had to i would have no problems to select another 100 and keep it that way.

Btw sorry for my english, feel free to correct (yeah im a french frog:))

Great episode guys! Blumpkins was the first reference of Mr. NinjaPenguin that I did not know.

Question of the Week: The only time that I had to downsize my collection was a few years ago when my brother moved out because growing up we purchased games together. He took most of the older stuff that was older than the PS1, which was fine with me because the majority of the games that are my favorite are from the PS1 and newer. Since then I have since been able to acquire the majority of the games that he took. The only reason that I would downsize my collection now a days is if I have a massive amount of dept. If it ever came to that I would not have a problem selling the majority of my collection because I would say that only around ten games that I own hold enough sentiment value to me that I would have a really hard time selling.

Hey BEN, I'm going to keep bugging you until you play Borderlands 2.

Moving is a huge incentive to downsize. After moving multiple times in a year I realized how many games I had doubles of (ex. Mortal Kombat on GEN and SNES) and how many games I got in lots that I didn't really care for (like Primal Rage). I got about a box full and traded them off for credit at a game store during their extra credit day. I ended up getting over $150 in credit and got some worthwile games like some mint, CiB GBA games (FF:tactics Advance, Super Gunstar Heroes, etc).

Its really hard to see a situation in my life where some of my collection needed to go. But getting married could be one of them, as Andy did to just that. I would have to be in a serious bind financially to be forced to downsize my collection

Do you have a collection (gaming or otherwise) that you've ever had to sell off or downsize? What circumstances would compel you to get ride of some (or all) of your collection?
I have been avoiding this question because i know ill write an essay and go to diffrent subjects so here it goes

Answer: As i have said in previous replys im a younger listener, im 14 so i have never been faced the the problem of selling of my collection for money or i cant afford bills. But theres always the fear of in the future something like having to downsize might happen, when i look at the gaming community on youtube and the fourms i always hate seeing videos where someone is saying they have to sell off most of their games for bills and things like that. But what i hate more is going back and seeing their previous videos that they have been posting in the past few months and when in that time period that have spent larges amounts of money on lots of games.
I try to use the gaming community to help stear what i want my future gaming life to be. not to offend anyone but their are youtubes i see who are 40 and living in their parents basement working at mcdonalds just buying and thats not the path i want to take. Then i see the youtubers that play and collect on a regular basis with good jobs and supporting a family, which of the 2 would you want? In the future for selling off my collection i want to avoid that as much as i possibly could, in the words of gamester81 "never spend money you dont have, no plastic", i dont want to spend more money than i have, gameing is a secondary to living. theres no way to predict the outcome of the future but you can help form it along the way. (i am completly off topic at this point) When i would sell my collection, mabey, just mabey if someone has a gun to my moms head and says "sell the games or she dies" ill get rid of them, or just scare them off with a copy of godhand.
