It's another solo episode! Due to an uncertain schedule and not wanting to kill our listeners with an overdose of awesome, Ben and Andy are going stag once again. This time, we go Emo...without the make-up, middle-class angst and godawful music. Instead, we get personal about our love of gaming. As cheeky as Ben and Andy can be, they have a soft and emotional side when it comes to video games, and they discuss our emotional attachment to both the hobby and certain games that have moved them. It's a shorter episode too, so those wanting a more bit-sized chunk of the Rascals will be well serviced indeed. Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ObI5YeWiIOo&feature=g-u-u The iTunes and MP3 download links are included in the video description box. Question of the Week What are some of the games, series or characters that you have developed a strong emotional connection to? What games made you happy, sad or downright angry? Let us know. Sub-question (asked by a fan of the show): What RPGs would you recommend for beginners to the genre? Hit us with your recommendations. |

I thought it was alright at first but you do realise they just redo the same kind of sketch again and again with the characters and it becomes rather tiresome so I wouldn't really recommend it. Better shows out there like Peep Show. |

I have a strong emotional attachment to the following games/series: Pokemon - mostly the first 3 Generations. Got out of it after 3, but came back for 5. Half-Life - So when do I get Episode 3 / Half Life 3? Shenmue - When do I get Shenmue 3? Sonic - Have yet to play a truly bad one (except Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Sonic and the Secret Rings) Yakuza - Please localize 5. Specific characters? John Marston - Awesome character, with an awesome story. How could you not like this guy? Kazuma Kiryu - ^^ See above. Dante - The definition of cool. Ryo Hazuki - Beyond the sailor jokes, a cool likeable character. Games that made me happy- Sonic Generations Skyrim Okami Half-Life 2 Tony Hawk Underground Sad- Dragon Age (because I spent money on it) Red Dead Redemption (the ending hit me right in the feels) Shenmue (No hope for Shenmue 3) Angry- Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing Transformed (words cannot describe how crappy this game is compared to the first one) Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Terrible game, franchise potentially ruined) Mario Kart Wii (Got it for free, wanted my theoretical $40 back). Extreme G-3 (Gamestop sold me a broken copy) Sonic Heroes / Shadow the Hedgehog - Stupid engine that controls like a butter coated pig on ice. As for good RPGs, I don't play many...but Western RPGs- Fallout 3. It's super cheaper, and it was my first RPG series. Japanese RPGs- Pokemon HeartGold or SoulSilver. Super easy to get into, very beautiful. Edited by helsinkirocks, Nov 25 2012, 04:19 PM.

Im glad you held back and stayed the perfect gent. It's not often you see horrible things said about the best sonic games ever made...then them saying they were pleased by Sonic Generations. I feel like an old man wanting to pee on the bus at the outrage of the younger generations tastes in music, movies and bingo halls...but each to thier own i guess. I'll add mine once i've had a sit down, a cup of tea and after Apollo Creed rubs my shoulders for a bit. |

one game that makes me mad is American Gladiators on the NES. I've had this NES ever since like 2002, and up until 2009 I could not get that thing to work. It had a severe case of the dreaded blinkies. the only game that I could ever get to work was American Gladiators. and that game is awful. It is one of the worst NES games I own. one game that makes me happy every time I play it is Banjo Kazooie. that game should be self explanitory. Pokemon Gold is another one. it always makes me feel adventurous. something to do with that awesome music... |

I'll add some books in this list as well, because books will definitely weigh on you emotionally. Games: Happy: LocoRoco - A cutesy platforming game with some very catchy music that makes me smile whenever I hear it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxLJoDkOTnM Little Nemo: The Dream Master - While this was a pretty hard game for me as a kid, I always relished the times I did get to play it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9VddCHwtjs Fire 'N Ice (Solomon's Key 2) - Though nowhere near as fiendishly difficult as Solomon's Key, Fire 'N Ice was an enjoyable Puzzle game I always liked to play and still do whenever I get the chance. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJH6OwTrmu8 Metal Gear Solid 3 - Makes me giddy every time I play it. Mostly due to its heavy Bond motif. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkEV-RI6aGI Yoshi's Island - Touch Fuzzy, Get Dizzy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Rr5lCfpAhk Sadness: Metal Gear Solid 4 - It's ending really did it for me. I think it was definitely the result of having played the first Metal Gear Solid game so long ago. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4aUcOOaOFw Skyward Sword - Something said at the end of the game that really hit me with the nostalgia stick. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DAJBU4Wtqg Final Fantasy - Finally beating it after playing it for nearly 5 years, starting when I was 5 or so. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2CDUIM8NonQ Angry: Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Sword of Light - One of the bad guys has some pretty dickish things to say about Marth's family while sitting on his throne. After reading it, I was pretty hellbent on beating his ass. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Mlj627Ayf0 Lunar Silver Star Story - Anytime I seen Nash's stupid face or whenever you heard him say one of his dumb phrases during battle. What a turd. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CLdfbBcCuMs A combination of emotions: Valkyria Chronicles Xenogears Xenosaga Xenoblade Dragon Quest V and many more... As for books, Song of Fire and Ice series Les Miserables (Jean Valjean :') ) The Good Earth (One point when the family is down and out and another right at the end.) and many more... |

Ben, just to let you know that Probotector is our version of Contra pretty much where instead of playing as men, you play as robots/Androids! Here is a video on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3X38Vnlz70 Glad to see Andy really liked The Walking Dead overall as a a whole because the United Gamedom crew of Denis, Derek and I loved it for the same reasons although unfortunately we did not cry althought it was quite sad and I was so close to it as well but Ben, hope you get to the rest of the episodes before the year is out. Whoo boy, get ready for a novel and a half with my answer to the question of the week so I won't be surprised if you're ready to truncate it a little. Emotionally Attached to/Sad Klonoa: Door To Phantomile - This is the first video game that made me cry and the ending of the game always gets me and you might find it strange that thiis kind of game would invoke an emotional reaction but it did because Klonoa and Huepow go on this journey together and then once they save the day from Ghadius etc, *SPOILER" you find out that Klonoa doesn't exist in that world and must go back to where he came from and the the ending scene with the music to me is quite sad. Hence why I definitely feel music is a big part of video games and can get you emotionally attached to a game. Lost Odyssey - One of the best RPGs of this generation. The thing that makes this game stand out and makes you emotionally attached apart from the main story and the characters are the 1000 years of dreams stories that fill in the backstory of Kaim's life where he travels to all sorts of places, makes new friends but unfortunately because of his immortality, he must live on while people who he has known pass away and some of the stories are hearbreaking to read. The Walking Dead - Perfect example of getting emotionally attached to the characters and the story of this series due to some of the difficult choices you have to make throughout, which you thought was right at the time could easily backfire down the line and no one way is the right choice pretty much. Easily one of the best games I played this year and my 2nd favourite adventure game behind Curse of Monkey Island. Final Fantasy VII - I am attached to this game because while it wasn't the first RPG I ever played, it is the game that got me into the RPG genre hence I have a close connection to this game and just fell in love with the world especially places like Midgar and The Golden Saucer! Aeris dying was shocking to say the least especially when her theme kicks in as it happens. Something so poetic about it I guess. Tales of Vesperia - This game took over my summer in 2009 and you come to really become attached to the characters like Raven & Rita and the interaction between them throughout the game via cutscenes and the skits that add a little bit of humour. Shenmue - I just feel a bit sad knowing we will never get the conclusion to Ryo Hazuki's journey of revenge against Lan Di but exploring Yokosuka, Hong Kong, Kowloon etc meeting all sorts of characters, doing all sorts of activities and kicking sailors asses made me attached to this series back when the first one came out 12 years ago! I do hope the HD releases do come out because it has been a while since I entered into Ryo's world. To The Moon - This game is solely played for the story and what a unique and beautiful story it is. Done in classic 16-bit sprite form, you try to fufill a dying man's last wish in that he wants to go to the moon and you go through his memories in order to succeed with this task so that he believes he went to the moon in his mind. What follows is a wonderful story about love, friendship, death etc and in that it makes you think that a single event could trigger a different outcome of life and what would happen otherwise etc. I was a a crying wreck at the end of it so even if it might not get you to shed a tear, if you don't get any sort of emotion out of it, you are stone cold in my opinion! The music is a major reason why this game just works as well. Happy Super Mario Galaxy - I went back to this game not too long ago with the Luigi playthrough and just hearing the awesome soundtrack and exploring the different galaxies easily brings a smile to my face and shows you why you fell in love playing video games in the first place. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - It is my favourite game of all time so of course it would put me in a happy mood whenever I pop it in and play it. Conker's Bad Fur Day - Forgot to put this game in for last week's QOTW since I have very fond nostalgic memories playing the multiplayer with my cousin before watching wrestling PPVs back in the early 2000s and just having tons of fun. The graphics, the humour and the Great Mighty Poo song makes this game my favourite on the N64. RPG for Beginner recommendations: Kingdom Hearts series: Combination of Disney and Square characters, what more could you want? Seriously, the series has a very easy to follow battle system (apart from Chain of Memories perhaps) and some of the other things the game has to offer are not that difficult like equipping skills and whatnot. Plus, you can set the difficulty, which is hardly seen in most JRPGs whether they are action or turn-based! Mario & Luigi series - I think these are definitely perfect games to get someone into the RPG genre because they are not too complex and very simple, charming games that have great humour and an excellent battle system that rewards you for perfectly timing button presses to evade enemies and giving enemies more damage etc. Paper Mario series especially The Thousand Year Door- Similar to the above answer in that it has a very enjoyable, simple battle system played out on a theatre stage and it rewards you with good timing with more damage or less damage received. I actually finished this game without dying once so take that what you will. Ben did mention Eternal Sonata, which I definitely agree with. Edited by Darro, Nov 28 2012, 12:14 PM.

I never cried from a video game but some games made me emotionally moving: Chrono Trigger: One of my favorite games of all time probably my favorite RPG of all time so the emotional part is after you encounter Lavos at the Zeal palace and then a certain death happen that I don't want to spoil! that made me feel very very sad :(. Deja Vu: I'm not if any of you are familiar with this classic point and click adventure game it originally came out for PC in 85 and it was ported to a couple of system but most people know this game on the NES (it's also on GameBoy Color with part 2) the reason why it made me emotionally moving it's because I felt lonely and unfamiliar in the whole game because your only one character it's not like RPG'S where they have one character that doesn't remember anything but his around with bunch other people who guide through the world NO!!!!! you one single character in Chicago in the 40's so know it's dangerous and especially when your at the street and that music start I feel a strange, lonely and trying to find clues about your past this is one fantastic game that I highly recommend. And with other media I got emotional with Dragon Ball Z just like Andy when Frieza killed Kririn and then Goku turned into super saiyan that was an amazing moment also when Gohan turned into super saiyan 2 after Goku killed himself with Cell but then he came back and Gohan kick the shit!!! out of him with kamehameha it made feel that evil is gone. As for RPG recommendation try the Mario RPG games: Super Mario RPG, Mario & Luigi and paper Mario seies are fantastic their not too difficult and you will enjoy those games especially if you like super Mario games. Definitely agree with the people saying The Walking Dead. That game choked me up numerous times, and the ending I got was really sad but I enjoyed every episode and will buy the physical copy as well. Arabian Bullwhip. Half-Life 2 Episode 2 made me really sad and shocked at the end, and now just makes me pissed off that it has been five years since that game came out and still no Half-Life 3. Hope they choke on smurf bukkake for trolling us for so long. I love Uncharted 2 and I totally choked up when Elena almost died at the end. (So screw you Andy! ) I love those characters (aside from that backstabbing British cunt Flynn) so anything bad happening to them is unacceptable...boston pancake...and no I didn't beat Uncharted 3 yet Also agree with Nier, but mostly because of the extra dialogue that you see during the new game plus. Canadian slapshot. That additional dialogue completely changed my outlook on the enemies and in some cases made me sad because their stories were pretty depressing. I think Halo Reach applies due to the time that it came out since 2010 was an incredibly awful, and depressing year for me. So I was probably more gullible to anything emotional during that time. I did think a good chunk of the death scenes from Noble team were pretty funny, but I was not expecting Carter to sacrifice himself and it made me a bit sad...despite being Halo. lol. Happy/Memorable: Fable 3. I thought the 2nd one was a lot better, but it also makes me laugh thinking about Fable 3 because of a messed up glitch that happened to me in that game. Microsoft had a generator that would let you create your own NPC's/wife to use in Fable 3 on their website and import it into your game. So I made a white brunette chick, imported her and married her, but for whatever reason she wouldn't get pregnant. I fucked her over and over again and still nothing. So later on my friend joined my game via co-op and when he came into my house he asked why there was a random black guy standing in my house. I had no clue what he was talking about so I grabbed my wife's hand and told him to follow me to somewhere else in town. He texts me a picture, and it's my character holding a black guy's hand. On my screen it was a white female, and I guess on everyone else's screen it was a black guy since I had two other friends check as well. So needless to say I married and was having gay sex with a black guy the entire time but didn't realize it. Kinda explains why "she" never got pregnant all those times I didn't use a condom... I would write angry/characters...but this is already getting into tl;dr territory. FFX would be my RPG recommendation! It's a pretty simple turn based RPG, epic summons, good story, great characters, and you don't have to grind too often to succeed. First JRPG I ever beat

Man, reading everyone's answers makes me feel like a jackass. I don't get attached to games and movies in that way - in fact, the music from games seem to be the only thing that strikes me with nostalgia and good feels. So, I guess the original pokemon games had some great music that brings me back a whole 10 or 12 years (a long time for me). I swear guys, it's the music... I'm sure you guys can appreciate it and the way it effects us. Just a few bars of this song and I feel like i'm 5 again. http://youtu.be/GSghsw9n_1I With this song, I can REMEMBER being 9. It's like for a few seconds, it's 2005. Damn. http://youtu.be/Jw6KRkx0vNg So yeah, sorry I can't answer the question. I guess if I tried really hard to think of one special game that I would love forever, it would have to be this one:

How could you NOT like Generations unless you are trolling? All of the best Sonic levels remade in HD? It's not like I only like modern Sonic games or anything and I've played like all of them. I love Sonic 1 and Sonic 2. I just think S3&K is the worst of the Genesis ones. 1, 2, and CD are all way better in my opinion. The only Sonic games worse than S3&K are Secret Rings, and '06. The only reason Sonic 06 is on there is because of it bugginess and glitchiness. When the game works, it's incredibly fun. |

hey guys great episode again, now question of the week, the only charactor that i have a strong attactment to is wonderboy, wonderboy in monsterland is my fav game of all time and the original wonderboy was my first game i owned on the master system. when i think of my youth thats one of the first memories that spring to my mind. a game that made me angry and sad at the same time was homefront. the scene when the soldiers shoot the kids parents infront of him. another game that made me bit sad was max payne 3, the scene when he is at his wifes and daugthers grave. ever since i have had kids little things like that get to me alot more. i got angry in dead space, when the female charactor betrays you at the end of the game. there are loads of games that made me happy and always put a smile on my face when i go back to them now, some of these are willow, wonderboy series and not forgetting prob the best racer of all time outrun, they bring back so many good memories. sub question - im not really into rpgs, i have tried a few but something is holding me back and i dont know what it is, but i agree that action rpgs are the way to get a foot in, thats why i will say dead island is a great game for this, the weapons you cab create are great and the island is fun to explore. its the only rpg i have ever played all the way through, apart from wonderboy in monsterland which is the best game ever

Before I go onto today's topic I want to bring some nostalgia to my fellow Canadian listeners. Video & Arcade Top Ten was a great show that had 3 kids battle it out on a recently released game. With prizes, hint n tips and top tens. This show was such a treat to watch. On topic, the one game that I can remember which game me a big emotional response was heavy rain. This story provided a roller coaster of emotions. I don't want to spoil anything by stating why so I can only recommend you try it out. Another notable game that made me very sad was Shadow of the Colossus. Anyone who completed the game knows why. RPG's to recommend for newcomers: Mario rpg, folklore, earthbound and kingdom hearts. |

Fucking Awesome! QOTW This is a question I really had to think about, I've played a lot of games in my life a lot of them I played and beaten and never had any kind of memorable connection to. But there is a few that I had some kind of emotion for Happy Jackass The Game on PS2 - fun game and has all that you would expect from a Jackass game, short experience but a fun one. Tony Hawks Underground 2 - a PS2 game that has Bam Margera vs Tony Hawk in a World Destruction Tour and you wreak havoc on several different locals around the globe. This game also has cameos from Jackass Stars Wee Man and Steve-O who are also playable. Another game where the humor as sophomoric as it is, puts a smile on my face. This next one is a mix Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas - the game starts out with a sad tone, with CJ flying back hme after him mom dies and through the whole game you really feel for the character as the circumstances of what happened begin to reveal themselves through the game, and in that last mission you get a sense of relief as CJ gets revenge on the man who was the cause of all his troubles. Plus getting to beat the shit out of people with a big purple dildo never gets old. Sad Castlevania Lords of Shadow ending was a very emotional one, I won't spoil it so I'll leave it at that Jak 3 - again I won't spoil it but there is a certain revelation in the game that is a sad moment, and your really feel for Jak in this moment. I don't rage at games, do I get frustrated? Hell yeah, right now New Super Mario Bros U is getting a bit frustrating for me, but coming off the easy sauce that is Super Mario Land 3D, I know that the game being harder is a great thing. RPGs for Beginners Final Fantasy X for the PS2 some people hate the game but i really enjoyed it and I'm not a big RPG guy and this was the one I sunk the most time into (About 115 hours with the restart I had to do because of a Demo disk glitch that deleted all my PS2 saves) Mario and Luigis Superstar Saga for the GBA amazing game on the system and one of my favorites. Suikoden for the PS1 shorter RPG at about 25-30 hours and the first game on the PS1 I owned Edited by pegasus187, Nov 29 2012, 11:55 PM.
