Episode 34 - The Rascals Get Emo

It's another solo episode! Due to an uncertain schedule and not wanting to kill our listeners with an overdose of awesome, Ben and Andy are going stag once again. This time, we go Emo...without the make-up, middle-class angst and godawful music. Instead, we get personal about our love of gaming. As cheeky as Ben and Andy can be, they have a soft and emotional side when it comes to video games, and they discuss our emotional attachment to both the hobby and certain games that have moved them. It's a shorter episode too, so those wanting a more bit-sized chunk of the Rascals will be well serviced indeed.

Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ObI5YeWiIOo&feature=g-u-u

The iTunes and MP3 download links are included in the video description box.

Question of the Week

What are some of the games, series or characters that you have developed a strong emotional connection to? What games made you happy, sad or downright angry? Let us know. Sub-question (asked by a fan of the show): What RPGs would you recommend for beginners to the genre? Hit us with your recommendations.

QOTW: When i first though about this question i though i was going to have to answer i dont have any connections to games, that i dont fell any emotions tords them. I have never been mad when they kill off a charater. But when i relly though about it i get relly connected to many games, i fall in love with the story and the characters as a whole, to when the end im more depress that the story is over that cerin characters died. Chrono trigger, tales of vesperia, and many others i feel this connection to. Games that make me happy/games i play to make me happy are normally easy colorful games that i dont get frustrated at, Fantasy zone, t and c surf design, and ninja gaiden i pop in occosenly just for fun. Games dont normally make me sad utill their over and the stories of the characters i have spend so long with on their journy has come to a close, they have such a great story and gameplay that makes me sad when i finish it, as apposed to terrible pieces of utter junk such as the terrible God Hand. I get mad at games with bad controlls when im not in the mood to just sit down for a weekend and play them, such as the mega man games and castlevania 2.
As for starter rpgs,
First i wouldnt recommend enchanted arms on the 360, i personally didnt like the game and find it incredibly annoying, it was one of my first rpgs and almost made me hate them. Also i wouldnt start with blue dragon, i havnt played it but i have had friends play it and say that it was only descent, i think a first rpg sould be someting to blow you out of the water. What i would recommend is Chrono Trigger, it was my first rpgs and i fell in love with it, a great story and characters and not all that complicated. Paper mario is a great starter rpg, very simplistic. Also tales of vesperia, it is an amazing fantasy game that everyone should play, i think it might make a good first. Some games that i would recommed for 3rd or 4th rpg is Final Fantasy X or Final Fantasy Mistic Quest, that are descnt games but might through you off for the first rpg. Also for anyone starting rpgs, gamefaqs can be your friend. When i started playing rpgs i almost quit because i spent 2 hours stuck and couldnt figure out where to go, then i checked a walkthrough and found out that i was standing right next to a door. Some people have a taboo and gamefaxs (or whatever its called) but it can help you if your stuck and mabey make you not quit rpgs.

I couldn't agree more with Andy's assessment of The Walking Dead. It was such an amazingly immerse experience and Episode 5 especially tugged on my heart strings. Such a strong connection formed between the characters and I throughout the journey and I will also admit that I cried on the last episode. I watched multiple playthroughs of the game and it was amazing to see how different the perspectives, views and choices were between all of them. I'm on such a Walking Dead quick. Just like you, Andy, I am definitely going to get the physical copy of The Walking Dead to show support towards the amazing writers down at Telltale Games. I'll be getting the Collector's Edition when I do because the 48 graphics novels compendium really entices me. I extremely look forward to bringing some people over to my house over time, hand the controller off, and seeing where they go with their own adventure in the story.

I don't think any game has reached the level of The Walking Dead with its emotional appeal towards me yet. However, the Mario games' endings consistently bring some tears up from me. SPOILER ALERT: Bowser gets his pussy SNATCHED from him. :( Bowser's not getting any action anymore, not since the woman whom birthed all of his children so long ago that is still to be identified.

Why so short, not even close to the three hour club.

Question of the Week:
The games that I develop strong emotional connections to are the games that have a strong story and amazing characters. The Walking Dead game is a perfect, I have to agree with what Andy said about the game. Another game that really got to me is Mass Effect 3, I don't know what it is but during the dream sequences I almost starting crying. As for happy games I tend to lean towards the stupid fun games like PaRappa the Rapper. As for angry, the only thing that makes me angry is bad controls for example I'm sorry Andy but Deadly Premonition controls just pissed me off.

Sub-Question: The RPG's that I would have to recommend for beginners are ones that have a simple battle mechanic and great story.. First one just happens to be my favorite game of all time and the game that gotten me into RPG's which is The Legend of Dragoon, which the battle system is just pressing a button at the right time. The problem with most RPG's this generation is that most of them have highly complex battle mechanics for beginners. A game that is from this generation that I would have to pick is Skyrim it has a simple battle system and plus highly addicting gameplay.

Hey guys I've recently got more time on my hands and have started listening to lots of podcasts again. I listened to episode 1 but sadly haven't listened again until now and wanted to let you know I really enjoyed the podcast! It'll be fun catching up (although it may take awhile as apparently this was a short episode).

Also Andsy when you described how you liked Nier it sounded just like Heavy Rain, doing anything for the ones you love and is in the same vain as The Walking dead games, check it out if you haven't already.

Heavy Rain is still very much on my radar, I just need to clear a few titles before I go back to it. My wife played it, and she absolutely adored it - So I can't skip this one! :D

As for Walking Dead, cannot wait for season 2.

Also, thanks for listening to the podcast dude!

How could you NOT like Generations unless you are trolling?
I tried so hard to like Generations, i really did. I wanted to love it as i'd heard so many good, or at least positive things about it and it just failed to keep me interested after 3 hrs.
Switching between the 2 generations of sonic became really redundant after a while, seeing as the new sonic does 2.5D sections in his own levels anyway it made no real sense. I was never really a fan of the Dreamcast Sonic games anyway, so maybe that has something to do with it. For me none of them have ever captured the magic of 1,2,3 and S&K or even the 3 Master System titles. Sonic 3 and S&K blew me away on thier releases, the look and the sound is almost un-rivaled on a 16-bit level. It definitley has the best animations for sonic.

There are a number of games i find myself really attached to in terms of the joy they bring, and of course some i just love to hate. James Pond II: Robocod and Rick Dangerous always bring me back to my youth everytime i play them, Its makes me so sad that all the Re-releases or ports of James Pond II since the PS1 incarnation have not actually been the same game, they are abismal and no fun to play. Finding that out really brought me to tears.

Any game by TAITO makes me happy really, thier games just ooze innocent fun most of the time and usually have you caught up in this incredibly bubbley cutesy world. I cant help thinking of candy floss/cotton candy, balloons and adorable animals everytime i play them. The New Zealand Story and Bubble Bobble are just 2 in a long list of heart warming gems.

As mentioned above, i have no time for Post Megadrive Sonic Games. They make me really sad a lot of the time, hearing his douchey little voice and the total lack of any actual platforming or gameplay makes me wanna cry. They keep dragging out game after game all to no avail. If they did something similar to Capcom and the original Megaman series and make sequels with the Sonic 2 or 3 engine then i might actually enjoy it.

I'd personally recommend Secret of Mana as a first RPG, the action RPG style keeps it from becoming boring and once you aquire the other 2 characters you can play the game multiplayer with a friend. That completely changed the game for me, had so much fun with that damn game.

I usually like and enjoy games with good stories but i dont tend to get too emotional with the characters or the storie, however i do hold a special place in my hearts for some games, examples:

Secret of Mana: This was the first RPG i played and it was the one that introduce me to this genre

Chrono Trigger: This was the first RPG that took me too much time to finish, 38 hours, i couldn believe it, altough now i have played longer rpgs, but at the time was ... WOW!!!

Xenosaga I II and III: I really really like the storie of the lost love, the imposible love, the clones, robots, religion, etc etc.

As for RPG“s to begin with, i think Arc Rise Fantasia is a good one, most of the people gave up on this game for the voice acting (wich is SHIT) but the storie is actually interesting, and the combat system is very entertaining and easy to learn, plus overall the game its not that difficult

Hey guys just started listening and would like to answer the question of the week.

A game that will always put me in a good mood is pokemon. Today we have all these super realistic shooters and deep and enthralling story's. But every once and awhile it's nice to pop in pokemon and just play a great, fun, lighthearted story while developing a strong connection to your pokemon (our bros as I call them). Being a senior in highschool I have all these things going on in life (getting ready for college, graduation, ect) so playing some pokemon can bring me back to being a kid and evoke quite a bit of happiness.

As for a beginner RPG I'll go with an easy one, Final Fantasy VII. I somehow managed to stumble through it as a kid so I'm sure any teen or adult would have no problem beating it.

This is just silly. If you think modern Sonic games have no platforming in them, you're playing the wrong games. Sonic Colors, Generations, Adventure, Adventure 2, and hell even 2006 has tons of platforming. I didn't grow up playing 16 bit Sonic games, I only had Nintendo stuff, but looking back on them now Sonic 1 & Sonic 2 aged way better than Sonic 3. I actually went back and replayed 3 and Knuckles to see if I missed something, and yeah S&K is a little better than I remembered, but still nowhere near as good as 1 or 2. 3 is still trash. Terrible level design, and while the sound quality is good, the music itself is lackluster, with no memorable tracks like say Chemical Plant Zone.

Again, people just hating to hate.
Was Mario 64 a platformer? Not at all.
Yet everyone still rides that game's **** like a gold plated dildo.

Angel Island isn't memorable like Green Hill Zone, Emerald Coast, City Escape, like the other opening levels in Sonic games. Carnival Night is ok, but had better versions of the casino theme in 1&2. Ice Cap is good though.

Man, i think its an age gap thing. Sonic 3 blew my mind on release as i thought it couldn't get better than Sonic 2...and they fricken did it. There may be smaller elements of platforming in the newer games but most of them are rushing through hitting springs and using homing attacks to hit enemies and using QTE's to avoid certain circumstances...especially in Generations. None of them seem to hold the magic of the original games.

I find the music in sonic 1,2 and 3 to all be memorable and very well written. The Minor and Major boss themes are phenomenal, with the Minor one featuring some voice samples, "C'mon!". Launch base zone has a lot of voice sampling too, which after the 100th repeat does actually get a little annoying and Ice Cap zone is one of the most remixed Sonic tracks ever written. Since Sonic Adventure i havent liked a single sonic theme, they just dont have any character. They just dont sound like sonic tracks.

Sonic 3 added more to the franchise by adding a bit more depth and a bit more strategy. Tails could actually be helpful for once and sonics shields were very cool and helpful power-ups. The special stages were varied and were a lot of fun to get the hang of, in Sonic 2 i always found the tunnel ring collecting got a little tedious myself. I fail to see the terrible level design myself, everything works and i never found myself being confused on its layout. Some area's they just made you slow down and think.

Dont get me wrong, i respect that you like the newer games and i know a couple of people that do, but I just dont consider them sonic games and i fnd very little in them to enjoy. Sure they have sonic in them, sure you collect rings and yeah sure you go really fast but the whole design of the game is wrong. Sonic doesnt work in 3D. Mario on the other hand does, im a big sega fanboy but i still admit that ther New mario games are better than anything sonic has done in the last 18-19 years. Mario 64 is an amazing game and a hell of a lot of fun, the camera is a little odd at times but it is a real blast to play with plenty replay value.

Im not just hating to hate, some of us really do just think the new games suck. I got so excited when i saw the trailers for Sonic 4, then when i played it i had this sense that someone offered me a a really tasty bakery treat and then just spat in my mouth.

Sonic sucks. I'll hate just to hate since even as a kid when I thought just about every video game was amazing I could not stand Sonic. Shame the good franchises on the Genesis like Streets of Rage, Super Hang On, Shinobi, Golden Axe...hell even Vectorman didn't garner as many fans as Sonic. Can't say I liked any Sonic games aside from the Kart racers.

I'm going to go out on a limb, and say that Sonic is now a bad franchise.

Yeah, i got real excited over the return to 2D and it was all for nothing. I can only imagine what they could have done with Sonic on the sega saturn. The move onto 3D has never sat right with me and all the games i've played have just bored me to tears, i personally think its time to let sleeping hogs lie.

As much as i like Alex Kidd, Sega couldnt bring us another great one. They'd have to lease it out to Arkedo or some other 3rd party to get a decent game out of it. :(

Nope.

It's still hilarious to me that people will hate on Sonic's transition to 3D for "losing" the platforming (which isn't true until you get to the Wii-era games, and even then its only Sonic & Secret Rings, Unleashed, and Black Knight which are spinoff games anyway), when Mario's transition to 3D no focus on platforming at all. You explored and solved puzzles. Gee what a great 3D platformer that is.

You should be glad we never got Sonic on the Saturn, this is the best they could come up with.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzvS_beXtXk

The 'douchey' voice thing is also a complete joke excuse. How about that awesome voice they gave Sonic in Sonic CD? The voice actors for the Dreamcast games were fine. Sure 4Kids voice actors were terrible, thank god they've replaced them. It doesn't even matter, nevermind the fact that it's opinion, Sonic only talks in cutscenes, so skip them if you don't like his voice.

I'll even go ahead and say this- Sonic Adventure 1 + 2, Sonic Colors, and Sonic Generations are all significantly better games than Mario 64, Sunshine, or Galaxy 1 + 2. You talk about boring games? 3D Mario games are boring. Especially the galaxy series with their lame orchestrated music that puts me to tears out of boredom.

If it being a generational thing means I can enjoy all of the Sonic games, then good, but it's hardly that some of you are hardly more than a few years older than me so its not much of a gap. I didn't play Sonic games growing up, in fact I didn't play the originals until 2001, well after I'd played both Adventure and Adventure 2. I enjoyed all of them for different reasons.

It's just a complete joke to me. I cannot fathom it. Then again I don't play games with my rose tinted goggles blinding my opinions on new games in a series. It's just a joke- I hope I never become so old and crotchety that I never stop loving games the way I do now.

Hahaha, calm down lad. They are only opinions. Im just listing things i dont like and things that put me off the newer games in the franchise. Your right, if you enjoy them then you go ahead and play them but that doesnt mean we're being "old and crotchety", it just means we think the new games kinda suck compared to the originals. :-/

I want to love new Sonic games when they come out, i've been a fan since i first played Sonic 1 on the Megadrive and my Master System and they all just blew me away. Now they just entertain me for the first level or maybe two and then im done. I can only really comment on Adenture 1&2, Generations and Sonic 4 parts 1&2, but neither of them have ever made me want to keep playing them. Maybe i should play the others, but then again i havent like any of the games in what is almost 20 years, so why should i? Title after title does so-so in terms of popularity yet they still pump money into what i see as a dead franchise, i just wish they would pump that money into something else. A new Ristar? Another Condemned? Maybe that 2D Toejam & Earl sequel i've been crying about for years? Or that elusive Shenmue game everyone wants and isn't sick to death with?

I understand why there wasnt one on the Saturn, im just saying im pissed they didnt make another 2D one on the console. It was a 2D power house and would have been very impressive to see, more so than Sonic 3 even. The push to 3D wasnt working so it should have been the natural next step instead of just not releasing a game. I have to admit that Sonic Adventure blew me away at first, i had never seen speed or graphic like that on a console, but it got boring fast. The games have just never gelled with me, its as simple as that.

The Mario games i referenced because i have actually played and beaten Mario 64 and Mario Sunshine, something that can take quite a few hours. I think i've put more hours into Mario 64 than i have the whole Sonic franchise since Sonic Adventure. Why? Its cause the controls clicked with me and i had a lot of fun, i wasnt forced along a path and i was free to jump around like a loony and smash Mario's face in the dirt. The platforming, which is quite evidentally there, is the core of the gameplay...to say there isn't any almost makes me thing you havent played Mario 64. Or your just going a little extreme on the attack, one of the two. I cant even fathom the amount of times i've hopped, skipped and jumped from platform to platform...bouncing of walls...shimmy-ing around narrow walkways... falling to a horrible injury or death due to my bad calculations. THATS A PLATFORMER. Not falling down a hole or hitting spikes cause i didn't pull off the QTE. Mario has its flaws of course and Nintendo are milking him dry too but i personally think he has made the transition to 3D far more successfully than Sonic. I get that you like Sonic and dont like all the praise the Mario games get, but it's no reason to say everyone is living blindly in a rose-tinted world and that we are old grumpy men not content with anything new.

On the age/generation thing. Even just 5yrs can make a difference, a guy at my work is 5yrs younger than me and he didnt start playing until the PS1 came out and has no real memories of the 8-bit or 16-bit era. It turned out i'd been playing games longer than he'd been born... :ermm: It doesnt mean you know any more or are more passionate, it just means you have a different perspective. People supporting the older Sonic games loved them back in the day for what they were, 1999 onward just hasnt given us the same enjoyment. Simple as that. I wasnt trying to insinuate you you were younger and there for less worthy of an opinion, just that time and age can change how you see something.
