Episode 35 - All Filler, No Killer

Andy is in full-on study mode and Ben is under the weather, but if you thought that would stop them from serving up another 2+ hours of awesome, you were wrong! In his episode, we fly solo once again and have a lively discussion about emotions, cake, hitting the books, being sick, drinking, cats, superheroes...and oh yeah, games! We had a main topic, but we decided to forego the serious talk in favour of our typical brand of rasciality. That's right, it's all filler, no killer bitches! Enjoy :)

Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7oMrSJSHSA&feature=g-subs-u

As always, the iTunes and MP3 links are included in the video description box.

Question of the Week

This one is a three-parter!

First, what are your thoughts on "The Dark Knight Rises" and Nolan's Batman trilogy in general? Second, what superhero comics, TV shows and movies did you enjoy as a youth, and do you still enjoy them today? Finally, we talked about movies and our upcoming Christmas holidays. What movies would you recommend we watch? Any genre, any era - hits us with your favourites!

The Dark Knight Rises was okay. I didn't think Batman was in it enough, and the way Bane is defeated at the end was really anti-climactic but I liked the movie. Batman Begins is still my favorite in the trilogy. Good amount of action, dialogue, and cool villains. Santorum, I really like The Dark Knight with Heath Ledger as Joker, but it's WAY overrated. I thought Nolan did an excellent job with Batman, but the 1989 one with Jack Nicholson is still my favorite :)

Fuckin X-men cartoon in the 90's was the shit. It's on Netflix and yes it's still badass!!

Not sure about X-mas movies tbh. Nice to see you turd burglars back.

Oh I couldn't agree more with the way Bane was dealt with at the end! I was like, "Is that it?!" Definitely was anti-climatic especially the way he shown as this unstoppable force throughout the film!

Andy & Ben, I suggest you use this address (DNS: 190.14.36.90) in your DNS field on your 360 or PS3 so you have access to the Netflix US library! It is the only reason why I am still subscribed to Netflix because the UK library is minuscule compared to the US one!

On the topic of Christmas movies & Michael Caine, my favourite to watch every year on Christmas Eve is The Muppet Christmas Carol! Love that film and know it won't be for everyone but it is my favourite Christmas film!

Thanks for the tip! Living in Germany I don't get crap except LoveFilm which is garbage!

As to the Dark Knight series... The only one that ever really caught my attention was "The Dark Knight." Heath Ledger really made that movie, other than that it was pretty average. "The Dark Knight Rises" never really appealed to me because... well with so many Superhero movies coming out it's hard to keep track of them all. When Batman Begins and Spider man first came out it was cool because it was something new and fresh, but now the industry is so over saturated with Superhero films that it's hard to care about the new releases.

From ages 6-12 I would get up every Saturday morning to watch the Iron-Man and Captain Planet cartoons. Along with the Power Rangers those were some of my favorite shows as a child.

My only Christmas movie recommendation would be "A Christmas Story."

Hilarious film with so many memorable moments, and watching it around Christmas has become somewhat of a tradition for me!

QOTW:

Dark Knight Rises is easily the weakest of Nolan's 3, but I am glad they included allusions to storylines from previous iterations (i.e. the back-breaking, Pit of Lazarus, etc..) but I really didn't enjoy Bane in this film. I feel like having a character constantly wearing a mask which covers a lot of the emotive segments of the face (the mouth..) made it harder to relate to his character until the very end when he is crying. Also apparently Gary Oldman / Police Commisioner Gordan has a fetish for climbing into out-of-control vehicles which rumble around and crash everywhere, as he irresistibly does so in the climax to both the first and third films. I thought the depiction of Selena Kyle was probably the most pleasant surprise of the third film, as I thought her character was nicely fleshed out. Namely that asssssssssssssssss oo wee wee!!!

Ben I watched Fall From Grace as well, several months ago after seeing it in the Gay and Lesbian Section on Netflix as I was scrolling through categories and it further confirmed my thoughts that those people are certifiably out of their minds. I suggest watching this video where one of the WBC wackos and another anti gay pastor are being interviewed and agree on nothing.

Ben Watch This

QOTW: I have yet to watch the New Batman Trilogy so I can't form a opinion on it. I don't really have any Superhero Movies to speak about but as far as the Superhero cartoons I watched as a kid the Batman Animated Series is a favorite of mine everything about that show was well done and I loved every second of it growing up, another one was the Superfriends cartoon from the 70 that were re ran in the 90s on Cartoon Network, Power Rangers, Sailor Moon (which I have gone back recently to watch on Youtube) and Captain Planet are others I also enjoyed

I love the Nolan movies (especially The Dark Knight, yes..also because of The Joker), but they'll never surpass the Tim Burton movies for me. I feel that the uber-realistic
way everything is portrayed does suit Batman (in the Nolan movies), but I prefer the more Burtonesque approach (dark fairytale-like).

Batman Returns will always be my favorite Batman movie, because of the stellar performance by Danny Devito as the Penguin, plus the amazing score by Danny Elfman (and many other reasons, but if I write that down you can be assured that this post wil never come to an end).

I also see the first Burton Batman movie from 1989 as the start of the whole superhero-craze. The superhero movie really became a phenomenon in its own right, people took them much more seriously as a genuinely serious blockbuster kind of movie.

As you can see from my avatar (and the ones I use on Twitter & Facebook) I'm an huuuuuuuuge fan of Batman - The Animated Series. I almost love this series more then I love my own partner LOL. What this series did with it's stories, style, music, animation and respect for the source material is way beyond anything that anyone has ever attempted with other superhero movies or toons. I even rate it (much) higher then the Nolan movies and possibly equel to Batman Returns.

Movie recommendations for Christmas:

For the "Feel Good" mood": Intouchables
Horror (quite disturbing!!!): Martyrs
Animation: Dexter the Dragon & Bumble the Bear
(a fantastic full-length animated movie actually made in Holland)
TV-Series: Six Feet Under
(everyone should have seen this series and it's a good fit for X-mas, since the pilot episode
plays out during the holidays)
Fantasy: The Dark Crystal or Labyrinth
Great comedy: Soap Dish (great parody of soaps like "As the world turns"" etc etc)
Fun Drama/Comedy: Y.P.F. (Young People Fucking)
(great Canadian movie :))
More animation: Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker
Porn: Men in Black Men

I loved The Dark Knight Rises and the trilogy in general is definitely my favorite superhero adaptation. Oddly, Batman wasn't my favorite part about it, though. No, instead I was more interested in the villains. The Joker and Bane were acted out so well, it was hard to not root for them!

The largest superhero tv show that I had in my life was Smallville. Having first started watching it with my father, it was a great bonding experience. Pair that with my friends watching it as well and we had our weekly show that we all loved to watch and discuss. The show went on for 10 full seasons and we all watched it in its entirety. Considering it only ended a couple years ago, the show definitely holds up. I'd still be watching it today if it was on. However, I will say Arrow has been an incredible replacement. The action is fucking awesome and the actors/actresses play their roles well.

Finally, I normally watch The Lord of the Rings sometime during winter break and with The Hobbit coming out, it's safe to assume the tradition will continue.

Loved the episode even thou it was short. The cat segment would of have been better if the story was that Ben puked on his cat.

Question of the Week: My thoughts on "The Dark Knight Rises" is that it is a very good movie but it will always be overshadowed by the Dark Night. What I think of the Nolan's Batman trilogy is that it is my favorite in the Batman series. I personally did not like Tim Burton because I tend to lean towards the more realistic movies, the Tim Burton ones are a bit to cartoon for me. The other superhero movies I like are the marvel ones that have come out in the last couple of years (Iron man, Thor, and Captain America). Some of the TV shows are Heroes and the first couple of seasons of Smallville. For movie recommendations for Christmas there are only two movies that you have to watch every Christmas they are The Christmas Story and Christmas Vacation. As for other movies that I have to recommend are Bladerunner, Ghost in the Shell, Miracle, and Moneyball.

Can't wait for the next Gents Challenge.

QOTW: I liked the dark knight rises, was it a grand epic such as the hobbit (which was amazing!!!), not so much but it wasnt ment to be, but it was still 1000x times better then being forced to sit down and play the appalling, atrocious monstrosity know as God Hand. For super hero shows when i was younger, i very much enjoyed a show called teen titans which it seems anyone my age who lived in the states can rember from watching as a kid. It was basicly the teenage counter parts of superheros, robin, kid flash, ect. For movie recommendations, ill stick to christamas movies, try the arnold schwarzenegger christamas movie "Jingle All the Way", it is complete garbage and on most lists of worst christmas movies but you need to watch it to say you saw arnold schwarzenegger in a christmas movie. Second, Santa Clause meets the Ice Cream Bunny, ill let your imaginations run wild on that one. And lastly "The Star Wars Holiday Special", whats better than a live action star war christmas movie with almost none of the actual actors!

Good luck with the retake Andy.
I will do this every night until I hear how you did with it.

Answer to the Question:

Part 1:
Never seen The Dark Knight Rises. As for the other 2 films in the series, I hate the first one. It's horrible and boring to watch. The action scenes are right at the camera. You can't tell what is going on and it is a muddled mess. The second film was all right, but that's only because Heath did a great job as the Joker, I think.

Part 2:
I am really not a big fan of superheroes. As a kid, I watched the Spiderman cartoon on TV Saturday mornings and that was about the extent of it. Nowadays, I mildly enjoy Iron man, but I think it may be due to Robert Downey's performance more so than the character itself.

Part 3:
Here's just a list of films I really like, which you guys may have already seen or what have you.
Once Upon a Time in the West
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
Water Boys
Patton
Casa Blanca
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Gran Torino
the first Futurama movie
2001 A Space Odyssey
Dirty Harry
Planet of the Apes (All of them) I enjoyed them.....dammit(`o´)

I like the Nolan era Batman movies, in fact the only 2 i dont like are Batman Forever and Batman & Robin. Michael Keaton is still the best Batman by far in my opinion though.

Im not a big superhero fan to be honest but as long as its old and a bit cheesy i'll probably like it. I suggest watching a movie called Society, i think it's right up the Rad Rascals street and it will not fail to amuse. It looks really shitty in the trailer, which it is, but it's a good bad movie. The ending makes it all worth while...trust me.

Yeah. I have a hard time sitting through 2-3 hours of full-grown men in pajamas beating up bad guys. I thought Dark Knight was OK, but that was only on the strength of Heath Ledger's demonically creepy performance.
