Bioware games are becoming dumber and less RPG like with every release. Though there is no denying that when it comes to individual characters, and when they are letting the writers do what they do best, they are very good. FAR too many missteps of late however. Bethesda games are definately becoming more streamlined, but I think the core RPG mechanics in their games have (mostly) benefited from this. They are definately not perfect though, they have never really written great characters, but their worlds are full of an insane amount of detail that make them worth exploring time and again. Square can write worlds, fill them with interesting characters and very complex storylines, and mix up and change the RPG formula with every game they make. Everyone has at LEAST one (and in most cases a few) black sheep Square games though, maybe the mechanics, characters, world, art or whatever didn't gel with them. I know I certainly do. Atlus are the only RPG developer that has impressed me with pretty much every part of every release of theirs I have played. They consistantly write interesting characters you build genuine attachment to, unique and (mostly) dark settings and are constantly varying and improving the core rpg mechanics in every game they make. |

Out of this list it has to be Bethesda for me. When i play an RPG i like to have full freedom of my actions and don't like being led through a story i don't really care for. Most Jrpg's funnel you through a storyline, going only where the game wants you to go until later in the game. Thats something that doesnt really sit right with me anymore, i like to just walk where i want and have the freedom to do whatever i want. |

Out of this list, probably Square Enix. They have made more games that i have enjoyed than the others, plus i'm not really into WRPG's so yea... |

How can it not be Square Enix. Look at the amount of great rpgs on the ps1 snes and ps2. I love atlus and bethesda (don't really have alot of experience with bioware games) but theres just so many great rpgs by them, from the niche (saga frontier, brave fencer musashi) to the mainstream (Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy, and Dragon Quest)
