A kickstart to the forums; A community contributed forum promotion video idea

I Like Games.

So the forums are over 4 years old now. A great community of gamers have assembled here over the years and made this their go to place to talk about games, which is awesome. I have always tried in my youth to make my own forums about games and what not, but most died down or I lost my ambition to keep up with them. That is why having a forum as successful as this is really amazing to me, and I thank all of you who choose to participate here over the thousands of other forums you could go to.

This forum has never "died", but these days the only way people find it is through the link buried in my video descriptions or through my banner on YouTube. I am sure there are better ways to promote it, but I never wanted to come across as too pushy or else it might drive unwanted attention our way.

I think it is about time we had a new resurgence of members to join our community, I am sure there are many who are completely unaware of this forums existence. I do not mean to do this by offering a free giveaway or contest (no offense to anyone who does this on their own forums) because I feel all that does is artificially inflate members who will never contribute.

This is where I need your help. I am thinking of doing a new promotional video for the forums that would be posted to my channel. I want to make it more personal, and include input from all of you. I want to include quotes or even short audio/video clips (not very long ones) as to why you use the PGRF forums and why others should join. I think this would be a great way for me to show the communities support for the forum and help inspire others to come and join the close community that we have going here. You do not need to be a long time member, but I will probably include your join date with your quote/video/audio.

I do not have a time frame of when I will be able to do this (I am incredibly busy these days) but I want some feedback on how you think I should approach this. If you have any other ideas for promoting the forums, please feel free to give suggestions.

I think it's a great idea to promote the forum in such a way that it will attract new, contributory members. You always run the risk of attracting trolls, but that's why you have mods :) Maybe doing a video where you feature testimonials from long time members, either read out by yourself or pieced together with video clips sent to you. These can simply be people discussing their experiences on the forum, what they get out of being a member and how far the forum has come in four years, among other things. As a long-standing member and mod, I'd be happy to contribute and even feature my ugly mug on camera if need be :)

The idea of doing a video based on "the users" (not the podcast lol) sounds like a great idea. It definitely would give the best impression on what to expect in joining by hearing from the people themselves.

I personally think that the forum is a place to have an honest discussion without getting immature or completely off-topic responses. That's the one thing I really like about it. I've been to a few other forums and I really get turned off by how an awesome topic goes so far off-topic and no one cares, even moderators. I have the mentality of an old man so I just really appreciate the maturity here. If you would like to use that for the video, here is my truncated answer:

"The forum is a place to have a honest mature discussion with fellow gamers without worrying about trolls ruining the experience."

I'm curious on what others think about the forum as well :)

I agree with Ben's idea, and I think it would work well! I'd be more than willing to submit a comment, video clip or audio clip to contribute. Just let me know as soon as you're sure on the specifics and I'll be there!

I really think you should get rid of some of the subforums so its not such a chore to check the forum though.

the Past consoles subforums are completely unnecessary. Last time anyone posted in those is usually like a month and I think it would be beneficial if you merged all the threads into the general "Past consoles" forum.

I think that the Wii, DS, and PSP subforums should be merged into the Current Generation forum, since they are not the current gen anymore.

Its so annoying to have to go through 50 different subforums every time I visit. It would probably be better to streamline things a bit.

I think the sub forums should be dealt with as Tr3vor said, I posted about it ages ago in the suggestions bit.

Current Generation and General Gaming can be merged.

General Youtube and Channel Plugs can be merged.

Feedback and Auctions Of Interest can just have a thread in Buying And Selling.

Merging past generation to a general "past generations section" would be a good idea in my opinion as well.

Current Gen & General Gaming do seem a little redundant but there's more than enough activity in Current Gen to leave it alone so I wouldn't see a need for it.

I don't see a point of merging the Wii, DS, or PSP sections yet. They are still very active and are still rather current. Just because the newest console came out, doesn't mean the past one should be dropped immediately.

Merging Feedback & Auctions of Interest doesn't make much sense either and would make it harder to view both of these topics. Feedback isn't a very active section but it's not suppose to be. It's suppose to be a section to see how safe it is to trade with another member, if feedback exists.

I don't have an opinion on General Youtube or Channel Plugs. I don't visit either section.

Each one only has like 2 active threads each, so they aren't very active.

Pete, I'd love to contribute to this new video using an old video pitch I did years ago as well as a new one. This forum has contributed to countless hours of fun posting, creating topics, discussions, talking in chat (now defunct) and meeting great friends I've had the privilege to meet in person.

Hmmmmmm sounds interesting. Post an approximation of when you want the video by and I will make a little clip for you. Glad you are doing this because the forum does need a life boost. I love the tight knit community, but we need fresh blood.

We can discuss real world problems here :P we are a community, but I see the positive message you are trying to send. I think a great idea would be to market us against major gaming sites because we are a tight knit community where your opinion will be felt and you will really feel like you are part of a great gaming community, not just one in many thousands.

Could we not make this sound like a high school informational video, or a bad infomercial?

Great idea Pete! The forums have indeed never died but there is in fact less active members nowadays in comparison to the first year or so, and I do agree its time for new members.

I really like the idea of a video type promo to advertise. I think with the amount of large channels we have that support the forum, it would really bring a rise in new members. However, keep in mind, new users means potential new trouble. Question I have is, do we have enough mods to deal with the influx? Also, if you do decide to make a testimonial video, I'd be more than happy to contribute!

I think Pete just making a short video plugging the forums would do wonders for activity here. Then we could all post video responses outlining why we enjoy the forums and anything else we'd like to say. That way it would reach Pete's subscribers immediately, then slowly branch out to every one else's.
