I have never early considered myself a “collector” but I know people who do think of me as one. I do tend to keep most of the games I buy. However, I also don’t have any problem buying multi-platform game on Steam for cheap and until Ni NoKuni I never bought or had any desire to own a collectors edition of a game. So where is the line between a guy who owns more game than average and a collector? |

A collector is simply someone who collects. If you feel you are a collector, you probably are. However, I do understand that some people feel their collector card is revoked when they see someone else who has accumulated a larger, pricier collection. I'd advise to not let that intimidate you or put you down. However, if it inspires you, maybe that can be seen as a good. kirbyhappy: |

Here's how I see it (generally speaking): Video game collector = someone who cannot (or is very reluctant to) buy a game unless its CIB and/or in mint condition (or factory sealed) and sometimes buy games that he/she doesn't intend to play for the sake of completing a collection/series/etc. Video game enthusiast / gamer = someone who only buys games that he/she intends to play and aren't super picky about whether or not the games are in pristine condition Please keep in mind that this is just my opinion and I'm sure that there are plenty of people who disagrees with me. I also don't believe that you have to be either or. I think that most people fall somewhere in between but they may lean more towards one or the other side. To me, you don't necessarily have to be a collector just because you have a lot of games. And likewise, you can still be a collector although you have a small collection of games. I don't think that's true due to the huge demographic of collectors who do not mind owning a loose copy. I've seen countless game room tours with huge sets of loose cartridges. |

That's true. It seems to me like those collectors still care a great deal about the condition of the cartridges though. I'll edit my previous post and change "and" to"or"

I think the latter part is oftentimes true. 'Collectors' will collect games they never intend to play, or generally purchase weaker/lesser ports/sequels/spinoffs of a series just to have the set complete. It's the mentality that usually goes like, "I love this series enough to warrant getting it complete, to make my shelf look extra nice." |

Pretty much someone who buys more games than they can play and/or buy games just for the sake of collecting. Most gamers go out and buy a game to play that day or the near future. They play this game, until they beat it or are bored with it and only then go out and buy their next game. I am sorry, but you can't get away the whole I will eventually play every game in my collection excuse. "Here is my monthly pick up video with 20+ games." "I play all my games", no you don't unless you are a professional disc swapper and that is your definition of playing games. All that being said, I am a collector and a gamer. I have found at times I just enjoy collecting as a hobby in and of itself. The thing is I am not delusional about the fact, that I am collector, not just a guy who happens to somehow have a backlog larger than the average person's entire collection. |

How about a person who collects video games? if you buy a game for the sake of a collection, then your a collector. one who doesn't sell games, and accumulates a collection over time. |

I agree with Techno, that's also not true. There's alot of collectors who often sell their games for whatever reason. I think it's really hard to define a collector objectively. It's one of those things where if you think you're a collector, you probably are one. |

You're the only person who can say if you are a collector or not. I have a friend who has a ton of games, and never sells them, but does not consider himself a collector and doesn't want to be a collector. Therefore, he's not. You also don'y need a lot of games to be a collector. A couple years ago when I started out I didn't have many games or that much money, but I knew I was collecting and still considered myself a collector! |

I honestly think this is the best definition that we have come up with. A game collector is someone who ACTIVELY COLLECTS GAMES, USUALLY OF GREAT VALUE. A COLLECTOR DOES NOT SELL HIS GAMES EXCEPT WHEN HE HAS DUPLICATE GAMES, THEN HE MAY SELL THE ONE IN LEAST GOOD CONDITION. SELLING YOUR GAMES, ESPECIALLY IMMEDIATELY AFTER BUYING THEM, THEN SELLING THEM FOR A GREATER PRICE, MAKES YOU A RESELLER. So I believe if you actively collect games, you are a game collector. When you stop collecting games, you forfeit being a collector. If you sell your games, you are a reseller. Make sense? |

I agree with a good bit of your definition. I'm probably in the middle of being a collector/gamer. The only thinking I differ with you on is buying a big batch of games at once means you are just buying stuff to buy. I buy in batches often because I find really good deals on just the games I want and fully intend to play so why not go ahead and get as much as you can while the price is right. I probably own more games than I can ever fully complete but I buy them with the honest intention to play them. I also only buy games I like and not just games other people regard as must haves. So I don't think that makes me exclusively a collector or diminishes my cred as a gamer in any way. I'm a hybrid of both like most of us probably

probably there's gotta be something in between a collector and gamer. i consider myself in between but i could be wrong. I buy lots of games with back logs i could never keep up. but i only buy the games that i want to play. I don't get the dirt cheap games that i don't have any interest on. and yeah, i fancy CE's and LE's. I guess collectors could also be defined as people who intend to buy games and keep them in their library, instead of trading it in or selling it after clocking it. |

Maybe. I suppose there are people who are collectors that follow certain dogma's and then there are those who like what like and don't mind having a collection no matter how large or small. For me, there are a lot of games in my collection that are still sealed. They were not, mostly anyways, bought to stay sealed and un-played. I just haven't got enough time these days in this point in my life to churn through the bucket. And it definitely has turned into a very, very large bucket. But I rarely buy a game I won't like or at the very least wouldn't like to try. Also for me, I have a problem with games that take up a whole shit load of time such as EVE Online (in the past), Various MMOs, Dark Sous and Warframe. They take so much time to really experience that once you start into it when what little time you have, when you come up for air you have just as many or more games that went un-played. Vicious cycle it is. |

I admit I did have to do the same with NES games. From a Nostalgia point I wanted the entire US library. Then I realized 'this is stupid because I'll never play most of these'. So then I shifted to just getting the games for the NES that I really wanted to own to play; which I was already doing on all my other systems. I do buy a lot of games but it's with the intention and excitement of playing them because I research them before purchasing to discover 'man that game is awesome and I want to play and own it'. But I do have more than I could ever play to completion. So again I'm like a quasi collector/gamer hybrid. I don't ever buy games anymore though just to have them. I fell into the trap at one time that 'such and such game is a rare and/or coveted classic according to so-and-so and I must have it too' even when I KNEW it wasn't my type of game. So yeah now I JUST buy what I like to play and I want to own

If you garner enjoyment from a hobby of playing video games, occasionally or a lot, then you are a gamer. If the physical media of the game and gaming memorabilia mean as much as or more than the game itself(ie gameplay, graphics, story, etc.) then you are a collector. If you just buy anything game related no matter what it is or what condition it is and don't care much for keeping it organized then you are a hoarder. You may fit in one, two, or all three of these categories at varying levels and none of them are better or worse than any other. Also regardless of which of the categories you fall into, a group of games and/or gaming memorabilia is referred to as a collection whether you are a collector or not. There, that should define and include everyone. ![]() I used to hoard and collect, now I just occasionally game and hoard steam games :D. Edited by eSkilliam, Dec 30 2013, 10:15 AM.

My definition of collector is someone who looks at acquiring games to be as important as playing them. They may not have all the time in the world to play the games they buy, but they are passionate about gaming as a hobby and they want to have a solid collection of games on their shelves. However, what qualifies someone as a "collector" is subjective. To some, it's about buying as much as they can and creating a library of games, while some might focus their collection more on a certain system or genre of games. At the end of the day, if you buy games with the intention of keeping them as part of a collective of games, you are a collector. I consider myself a very casual collector. I have some of my favorite games on hand, but most new games I buy and trade in as soon as I'm finished. I don't collect games for volume and I am quick to sell or trade if I am not playing them. I love gaming, but collecting isn't for me. However, music is a completely different ball of wax. Anyone who has seen my CD collection can attest to this - I have enough albums to open a record store! |
