Third Person MMO with no subscriptions for PC / PS3 / 360

A coworker was telling me about Defiance Thursday A new third person MMO with a SyFy TV show tie in where the game effected the show. Friday I saw a thread about the game so I looked at some videos and decided I would give it a go. Before last week I hadn't even heard of this game and I am a huge fan of MMO's. This One just slipped under the radar for me somehow. Anyways I called up my neighbor that plays MMO's with me and asked him if he wanted to try the PC version of the game out so we both went to Walmart and picked it up. The game installed fine and then had to update. At first I was having problems with the update but after adding exceptions to my firewall it was patching fine. When I went online to create my account I ran into some problems because of all the traffic the web page was having but after trying non stop for a bit I finally got everything setup and was ready to play.

Skills
The game reminds me a lot of Borderlands or what Borderlands would be if it was a MMO and not just online co-op. Rather than picking a class like you do in Borderlands you pick your starting ECO skill within the first 5 mins of the game. You can have multiple loadouts so its possible to change your main ECO skill after unlocking the other 3 in the grid. (The first ECO skill you pick from the 4 is your starting point on the skill grid.) Also as you level your ECO skill you unlock perk spots that you can equip. It is also possible to re-spec and pick a new starting skill, all it takes is in game cash and its based on your current ECO skill level.

You can use any kind of weapon you like and as you kill with a weapon the skill increases. You also have access to a ATV after about 30 mins of game time and you can level up your skill with It as well increasing the speed and turbo boost and such. You can breakdown weapons and salvage barrels and scopes as well as modding weapons.

Questing and Events
You can only have one quest active at a time and as you progress through the main quest line you will unlock side missions you can do as well. Also as your exploring you come across mini events such as raiders invading a farm or mutant solders blocking the road you can do for big chunks of exp and cash. Also there is episode missions were your helping or interacting with the people from the TV show. There are server events called Arc Falls where you team up with a large amount of people to take down huge alien bugs earning exp cash and weapons depending on how you rank. The Arc Fall events surprised me because the main boss of the event is a huge God of War style enemy with like 30 plus enemies running all around plus all the people there to kill the stuff (50 or more) all shooting and blasting and the game never dropped below 60 FPS and runs like a dream on my system.

There is also co-op missions and PVP but I haven't even tried them out yet. (will post more on this after I play them some this week)

TV Show Tie-in
The game ties into a new show coming on SyFy the 15th of this month and the stuff you do in the game effects the show and stuff that happens in the show will also effect the game. After playing this almost non-stop this weekend I am pumped to see the TV show and see how this pans out. sadly I dont know a lot about this but we should learn more when the TV show starts.

Final Thoughts

Other than having some minor issues with creating an account on there web page because of the large amount of traffic I haven't ran into any bugs or glitches. The game runs at a constant 60 FPS maxed out even in the large scale Ark Fall events (everyone's system is going to be diffrent but the game isn't too demanding). The controls with both keyboard and mouse and the 360 controller work very well. One of the only negative things I can say about the game is the music can get repetitive.

I think the game deserves a solid 8/10 as I had very little issues and it kept me playing almost non stop this weekend and even while I type this I cant wait to get home and play some more!

This is based on the PC version of the game as I haven't saw nor played the console port.

Hey thanks for the write up! I've had my eye on this game and am really considering getting it. Is it a game that can be played solo? I don't really know anyone who is playing this game sadly so aside from boss battles I'd probably have to do solo.

Is there a good variety in the missions? Based on IGN's impression they say it's a lot of drive to a certain location, hold button to activate something and the mission is over.

Also do people share experience points in random events in the world even if they aren't in a group like GW2, or is it like World of Warcraft where the person who hits the enemy first gets all the credit?

Random question, but does anyone happen to know if Defiance will be available on Amazon Instant Video the same day it launches on Sci-Fi? It says if you buy Defiance from them you get $20 credit towards the show.

Thanks again!

You do have a lot of fetch quests but even in those type quests you will get ambushed or have to fight stuff before you can click on the object. Rather than making you kill x amount of mobs the game makes you do stuff like plant bombs or retrieve lost items but before you can do this you will have to clear out the area and or disable turrets and the like. there are also timed events and races where your ranked sort of like the ones in DC Universe Online. And there are solo instanced ones where you have to use certain weapons to survive waves of stuff. I don't think its any worse than any other MMO I have played. The Episode missions work like solo instances were your other party members will be the main 2 stars of the TV show. Both the Episode missions and the main story missions are all voiced.

So far the only stuff I have played can all be done solo, I haven't even tried the co-op instances or the PVP in the game yet and the game has a ton of quests to do. You have to progress the story to unlock them sometimes but there don't seem to be any shortage.

The events that pop up all over work a lot like they do in guild wars were you get exp based on how much you help and what you do regardless if your solo or in a grp.

no clue on Amazon but I would bet it will be because they even have the season pass for sale on there for all the upcoming DLC for the game.

Also if you want to get the PC version you can play with us if you want!

As I've mentioned, I watched a 30 minute Let's Play of this game, and it's not entirely my type of game. However, the online aspect and open world might be a redeeming factor for me. However, I'll wait a few months before jumping aboard.

Also, good job on the review Majin! Was curious about this game before since reviews haven't come afloat yet as the servers didn't go up for any until release.

Fully agree with alot of what you said. I'm currently on the 360 and the only time the frame rate drops is during the ark-falls, but it does not become unplayable.

Today I was having issues when trying to do the 101 co-op mission...

every time I would load into the instance it was empty like it wasn't resetting or something. Shortly after trying this a few times they brought the server down for maintenance and since its been working. Not sure what the issue was.

Thanks for the write-up. Have lots of friends on my friends list playing this and my son and I had just seen it and were debating about starting accounts on the 360.

Are there servers? Do you party up? Like you would in a normal MMO? I'll add more questions as I think of them before I go out and buy it.

yes you can group up with people and there are even instances you can run. It more or less plays just like a normal MMO.
