The best three for STG's without a doubt would have to be the PC-Engine, Japanese Sega Saturn and a Japanese 360 (Or the American counterparts if you can mod them or order the stuff you need to play imports.) The PC-Engine probably has the largest library of STG's on any console. The Sega Saturn has some of the most sought after classics like Radiant Silvergun, Battle Garegga and Batsugun. The Japanese 360 has the best modern STG's thanks to Cave. If your wanting to play STG's and RPG's its a toss up really on what system to pick. The North American 360 has the better RPG selection for people that cant speak Japanese but without importing a 360 you will be missing out on a lot of the Japanese exclusive shooters. The 2nd thing I have to say is unfortunately collecting STG's is going to be expensive. The best of the best never came out anywhere but Japan and on some of the more obscure systems. So your going to have to import and pay marked up prices due to the demand and rarity of these games. Those in my opinion are the best three consoles but the PS1 and the PS2 has some good STG's as well and nothing can beat the PS2 for RPG's. But again the STG's are mainly going to have to be imported causing you to have to mod or use other methods to play them.

Here's my list for shmups along with the essential games for each system (imo). If you love STGs, I'd highly recommend that you get a Japanese version of each system: 1. Xbox 360 Exclusive to Japan: - Cave: Deathsmiles II X, DoDonPachi DaiOuJou Black Label Extra, Ketsui Kizuna Jigoku Tachi Extra, Ketsuipachi (this is the Arrange Mode that's on the DoDonPachi DaiFukkatsu Black Label disc that was only released in Japan. However, you can download the Black Label as a DLC on the localized version but NOT the Arrange Mode), Mushihimesama HD (I'd highly recommend that you get the LE as it contains the v 1.5 aka. the Matsuri version which is simply outstanding!) - Moss: Caladrius - Triangle Service: Shooting Love 200X - Milestone: Radirgy Noa Massive - Arc Systems: Shikigami no Shiro III Region-free or localized games: - Cave: Akai Katana, Deathsmiles, DoDonPachi DaiFukkatsu, ESPGaluda II Black Label, Guwange (XBLA), Muchi Muchi Pork & Pink Sweets, Mushihimesama Futari - Qute: Eschatos, Ginga Force - Moss: Raiden IV - Gulti: Raiden Fighters Aces - G. Rev: Strania (XBLA), Under Defeat HD - Tachyon Inc: Bullet Soul DoDonPachi SaiDaiOuJou and XIIZEAL & ΔZEAL are coming out soon (I caaaaaaan't wait!!!) and they are both region-free. 2. Sega Saturn Exclusive to Japan: - Cave: DoDonPachi (and maybe DonPachi as well but I'm personally not a big fan of it) - Raizing: Battle Garegga (best shmup ever made imo!), Kingdom Grand Prix, Soukyugurentai - Toaplan: Batsugun - Success: Cotton 2 - Taito: Gekirindan, Layer Section II, Metal Black - Technosoft: Thunder Force V - Irem: Kaitei Daisensou (this game was developed by the team who later went on to create the Metal Slug series) - Warashi: Shienryu - Treasure: Radiant Silvergun - Psikyo: Strikers 1945, Strikers 1945 II, Gunbird, Sengoku Blade - Konami: Gradius Deluxe Pack, Salamander Deluxe Pack Plus Region-free or localized games: -Taito: Rayforce (known as Layer Section in Japan), Darius Gaiden 3. Sega Dreamcast Exclusive to Japan: - Psikyo: Gunbird II, Zero Gunner II - Milestone: Karous, Radirgy - G. Rev: Border Down - Warashi: Triggerheart Exelica - Capcom: Giga Wing, Giga Wing II, Mars Matrix - Treasure: Ikaruga - Triangle Service: Trizeal - Success: Psyvariar II 4. Playstation 2 Exclusive to Japan: - Cave: DoDonPachi DaiOuJou, ESPGaluda, Ibara Black Label, Mushihimesama - Psikyo: Psikyo Shooting Collection I (Strikers 1945 I & II), Psikyo Shooting Collection II (Sengoku Aces & Sengoku Blade), Psikyo Shooting Collection III (Sol Divide & Dragon Blaze) - Success: Psyvariar - Sega: Thunder Force VI - Milestone: Radirgy Precious - Skonec: Homura - Warashi: Double Shienryu - Compile: Chaos Field: New Order Region-free or localized games: - Capcom: Giga Wing Generations - Irem: R-Type Final - Treasure: Gradius V (yeah, it was actually developed by G. Rev and Treasure although it's a Konami franchise), Silpheed: The Lost Planet - Alfa System: Mobile Light Force 2 (known as Shikigami no Shiro in Japan) - Moss: Raiden III 5. PC Engine Exclusive to Japan: - Data West: Rayxanber, Rayxanber II - Hudson: Gate of Thunder, Lords of Thunder - Irem: Mr. Heli, R-Type - Compile: Spriggan - Kaneko: Nexzr, Super Star Soldier - Konami: Gradius II, Salamander - Taito: Super Darius, Super Darius II Region-free or localized games: - Hudson: Air Zonk, Blazing Lazers, Soldier Blade - Irem: R-Type - Namco: Dragon Spirit I'm probably forgetting a couple of ones here and there but I think that I've covered the essential ones in any case

Wow, thanks guys. I'll definately be checking some of those games out. I loved Deathsmiles for Xbox 360, but seeing as Deathsmiles 2 hasn't been ported over to PAL yet I'm very tempted to buy a japanese xbox. Think I might stick to 360 titles as I don't want to have to pay a premium for some of the older titles. But again thanks guys, those are some lists

I have to agree with pestro on Battle Garegga being one of the best STG's ever! I just wish they would of ported Armed Police Batrider and Battle Bakraid over to the Saturn as well. Battle Bakraid is probably my favorite Raizing shooter! |

Just checked some of the prices for japanese 360's, very pricey. I have a spare 360 so I might just try modding that instead |

Deathsmiles II is very different from the first one. It has a really complex scoring mechanic and it doesn't look at all like the first one (it's actually in 3D but you move on a 2D plane, of course). The 360 HD mode is not that great (I actually managed to clear it on one credit on my very first attempt :S ) and the same goes for the Arrange Mode but the Arcade Mode is loads of fun and pretty challenging! It's definitely worth getting for the Arcade Mode alone. Also, if you get a Japanese 360, you can use the power supply for your own country with it. Oh man, I would've loved to see a Saturn port for Batrider and Bakraid, especially considering the high quality of the Saturn port for Garegga (the only thing that the port is lacking is the slowdown but I've played the arcade PCB version quite a bit (and I've also played it a lot on shmupmame 3b with the lagless Raizing drivers) and there's not much slowdown in the game so there's nothing to worry about in regards to that)! I really want to get the arcade PCB for Batrider at some point ![]() I don't have any experience with modding 360s but I wouldn't recommend doing it based on what I've heard. I'd recommend that you start off by seeking out the region-free ones. Also, just wanted to let you know in case you get Ginga Force that I have translated all of the dialogues along with all of the menus in the game (you can find the link to my translation in my sig)

I'm glad to see the Raizing love here! The Advanced Course in Batrider is seriously hardcore, haha. I've played a lot of Garegga but I haven't much of Batrider tbh. But that's going to change once I've gotten a letter score in Garegga with Golden Bat (my current high score is around 7.2 million so I'm getting there but it'll probably be a couple of months until I get a letter score ). Batrider is just one of those games that screams awesomeness! I also can't think of another STG that has as many secrets and small details as Batrider. Those aspects have always been a staple of Raizing's games (along with the dynamic rank/difficulty system that you need to manipulate by avoiding certain power-ups, suiciding and so on) but I really think that they outdid themselves with Batrider by even adding secret bosses.Sorry if this is slightly off-topic, but which characters do you guys play as in Batrider?

Naw I live in North America in North Carolina I just think I was Japanese in a past life (●´∀`●) I almost always use the Saber Tiger for Battle Bakraid just because I always do the best with it and I mix it up on Batrider just because of all the characters you can play! I do love the genre as you can probably tell from my Cave girls sig but there is no doubt that pestro would kick my ass playing these games after seeing some of his high scores in the PGRF High Score Challenge thread! Some of the main reasons I built my MAME cabinet! Edited by majinpowers, May 25 2013, 11:56 AM.

For shmups, your absolute best options include the Sega Genesis (wider variety and a greater amount of high-quality shooters than its competition of the time), the Sega Saturn (few stinkers here, and again, a lot of variety as this is when the bullet hells began appearing, but they hadn't dominated the genre just yet), the Dreamcast (lots of flawless arcade conversions, and it still seems to get new shooters to this day), the PS2 (can play all of the PS1 shmup library--which is great--and it lays host to lots of Japanese compilations and Cave arcade ports), and lastly, these days, the XBOX 360 (decent support here in the US, a nice chunk of region-free titles from Japan, a boatload of XBOX Live Arcade shmups.. oh, and, Raiden Fighters).

pestro did you pick up Sturmwind for the Dreamcast? I had the collectors edition pre-ordered for a long ass time and had forgot about it until it showed up like 2 weeks ago. I played it some this weekend and its a great side scrolling STG. I didn't get to play it too long but the graphics are unbelievable and the soundtrack is nice also. |

That's awesome! I haven't picked it up yet but it looks pretty sweet! I watched a couple of youtube clips and yeah the graphics look !!! I've only heard positive stuff about it so I might have to check it out Did you get the kraken plush with the collectors edition? ![]() Btw majin, I highly recommend that you pick up SaiDaiOuJou if you haven't already. It's really good! The Arcade HD and 1.5 modes are pretty tough though compared to most other Cave games. I'd say that it's about as difficult as Ketsui and DaiOuJou if you select the shot or laser type. Expert mode on the other hand is absolutely ridiculous. I think that it's harder than the second loops of Ketsui and DaiOuJou :/

No I didn't get the plush with mine because I had it ordered before they had the plush package. You can still get just the plush from there webpage just not the collectors version of the game. http://www.redspotgames.com/shop/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=35 Yes I will for sure be getting SaiDaiOuJou as soon as I get payed this week! Man its harder than Ketsui!!!!!!!!!! that is brutal! Edited by majinpowers, Jun 10 2013, 04:16 AM.

Does anyone know if it's worth picking up a Japanese Wii for Illvelo? I enjoy most of Milestone's stuff but the game looks really over the top. It seems like it could either be really fun or really confusing ![]() http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjqXzVsqII0 |

I liked the game myself but I would recommend modding your Wii rather than getting a Japanese one. Also you can get Illvelo in the Milestone Shooting Collection 2 for just as cheap and it has 4 other games. |

So majin and pestro, you guys are probably the most knowledgable shmup fanatics on the forums here, I have been wondering if you guys have set up something like an arcade cabinet. I am looking to delve into myself (not the physical arcade cabinet but just a PC with a shitload of MAME etc). Any ideas which software to use? |
