Hey guys just wondering what the best consoles for shmups and RPG's are? Just looking for the widest variety that aren't majorly expensive. |

Thanks, majin! I didn't know that it was on the second Milestone Shooting Collection I'll definitely pick that up! I generally don't like modding my systems but Illvelo is currently the only Japanese exclusive Wii game that I want so I think that I will go with your suggestion! Also, I already have two Wiis and one of them has hardly been used ![]() lol, maybe so majin already has a MAME cab setup so he is probably the better person to ask. But basically, you have a version of MAME running as a backend and then you run a front-end, such a the Hyperspin (I think that's the front-end gamester used on his MAME cab IIRC). My advice is that you make sure that your back-end version of MAME has lagless drivers for the shmups that you want to play (and that it supports the games that you want to play ofc ). I'd recommend that you take a look through the different versions of ShmupMAME that are out there and get the one that supports the games that you want to play. Each version usually adds support for specific games so newer versions may not be compatible with games that previous versions support. For example, ShmupMAME 2 supports DDP DOJ (among other games), ShmupMAME 3 has lagless Raizing drivers (but doesn't play DDP DOJ), ShmupMAME 4 supports Mars Matrix (among other games) (but doesn't have lagless Raizing drivers nor support for DDP DOJ). Of course, you can always run a vanilla version of MAME instead. There are plenty of pre-configured MAME setups that you can get where most things work out-of-the-box. I'm not 100% sure on this but it seems to me like vanilla versions of MAME have better overall compatibility whereas ShmupMAME has better compatibility for a select few games. |

I run Hyperspin on my MAME cabinet and you can configure it to run as many different versions of MAME as you like. I have it running ShumpMAME for specific games and also SlowpokeMAME with the Cave drivers to run games like Pink Sweets. I also will add new versions of vanilla MAME as there are fixes for games just swapping out the ones that was updated so I don't have to redo the entire machine. Really the skys the limit so long as your willing to tweak everything in Hyperspin you can get almost any game working 100% @pestro modding the wii is very easy and since you have 2 of them I would say go for it. There are a few other import games worth your time especially from the PAL region. Be sure to check out the import section of the Wii thread I made for some more import recommendations. http://petesgameroomforum.com/topic/4300602/1/ Edited by majinpowers, Jul 18 2013, 09:57 PM.

Interesting! I do already have MAME, ShmupMAME and EVIL MAME MUAHHAHAHA (which has the CAVE drivers so I can play those games). Hyperspin seems very interesting, that would be great to have running, never knew about that. How hard is that to set-up in conjunction with MAME and other emulators? ...dont answer going to watch some tutorial videos on YT. I envision having an old notebook set-up with this Hyperspin which is able to run; - MAME (and ShmupMAME and CAVE MAME) - NEO GEO - NES - SNES - Genesis Then have my custom arcade stick which runs on PC to use and control that all. Also have that MadCatz SF IV arcade stick for a second player. If that runs flawlessly, I might look into building a unit for it. |

hyperspin is very simple to get up and running but if your like me and want videos and artwork for every game then it can be time consuming if your making these things yourself. If you start a hyperspin project feel free to hit me up with any questions you may have. Also I can share some of my custom themes I have made for games that had none if you want them. You can also add other emulators very easy... I have non arcade games like Streets of Rage 2 and Annette Again running on mine. Edited by majinpowers, Jul 19 2013, 03:56 AM.

Alright thanks! Might have to look into this sometime soon. Watching this tutorial right now, seems good enough: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnHEhe4lz1U EDIT: So which version specifiacally are you guys running for the CAVE shmups so they are in the best available condition (lagless, or close to it)? And yes, we are talking about the SH-3 ones. I have the vanilla MAME version with the drivers before they took them out. I remember Mushihimsama en Ketsui not working 100%, ones didnt have sound I believe. Edited by Aerodynamisch, Jul 19 2013, 05:36 AM.

I'm using s special build of Slowpoke MAME made just after the Cave drivers were took out of MAME. It dont run them 100% as far as slowdown is considered but it was optimized so the music plays correct and most all the games run great just need slowdown tweaks. Pink Sweets is the only one that acts a tad bit strange but its still playable. I'm running them on a Core i3 PC with 4 gigs of DDR3 1333 and Intel HD graphics I built for my cabinet. Mame is almost 100% CPU based for performance so running the Cave games with the unpolished Drivers on a lower end CPU will cause some problems. Pink Sweets still runs a tad bit off even on my Core i7 PC. Also in general running MAME x64 will give you a boot if your running a multi-core CPU. If there is a newer MAME build anyone knows of that works better for the newer Cave games please share. Edited by majinpowers, Jul 19 2013, 11:06 PM.

I immediately bought the Collector's Edition of the Dreamcast port of Neo XYX after watching some gameplay footage of the MVS port on youtube that one of the admins on the shmups forum put up: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ug5Uq0AUm-k Hoooly shit, I am so ridiculously pumped for this game! It looks like it could be NGDev Team's best release so far. It looks like it might even surpass Gunlord. Anyone else picking this up? Edited by pestro, Oct 31 2013, 08:46 PM.

I also got the Collectors edition coming for the Dreamcast! The game looks bad ass... reminds me of Genesis / PC-Engine era shooters like Tatsujin or Grind Stormer with cave style bullet patterns. Cant wait to get this one! Edited by majinpowers, Nov 1 2013, 03:54 AM.

That's awesome, majin! Have you heard any news on when the DC port is going to be released? I've heard rumors of December but I'm not sure how accurate that is. |

I found this on their facebook page:
Not sure what "the extra screen mode" is but I look forward to it. I hope that it's tate for people like me who can't rotate their TVs and have to play Battle Garegga in squashed tate mode...

I hope it does release before Christmas that would rock. Seems like I remember reading that it would have Tate mode being one of the few Neo Geo carts, if not the only one that has this feature. |

Glad to hear! I realized now that I had accidentally put Karous under PS2 in my recommendations list when it should have been under DC so I fixed that... There are plenty of amazing shmups on the Mega Drive as well. I'd recommend checking out Battle Mania DaiGinJou (aka. Battle Mania 2), Undeadline, Thunder Force IV, Musha, Elemental Master and Twinkle Tale to name a few. Edited by pestro, May 2 2014, 10:21 PM.

Genesis, TG16, and Saturn are my picks. I like the Genesis because most of the titles are a great fit for using controllers opposed to Joysticks. This could be system limitations, but the Genesis will fill any casual shooter fans appetite, plus you can snag some great games cheap in comparison to the other systems shooter selection. As far as RPGs, I got nothing for you I don't think the SNES would let you down though

So since no one answered the rpg portion, ps2 and snes are your best bet. Those two consoles are known for their great and abundance of RPGs.
