I've recently started playing Chrono Cross and I thought it would be fun to have an open discussion about it. It's bringing back some really good memories for me. I don't really have a ton of memories of it but as I've been playing they're coming back to me. It feels like the story is simple yet has some slight complex elements. I'm not really following it a whole lot but I'm getting the basic gist of it. I'm really interested in seeing how it ties into Chrono Trigger, story-wise, as I am a huge fan of Chrono Trigger. The music is awesome. My favorites so far are Fossil Valley, Hydra Marsha's, "Another" world map, and the boss music. The opening sequence music is incredible too. They just all really capture an awesome vibe of each area. I also like how the battle system is pretty simple and easy to get into. I'm only around the level 4-5 on the element grid so far but using elements always feel cool. I like that you can only use them once per battle too so it really keeps the battles on the shorter side and also makes it so I have to plan and keep the grid balanced. Anyone have tips on the best way to play this game? Due to the large character roster, it feels a bit hard to get attached to characters but I decided to play with just a few select characters and switch out if needed. I also took Kidd into the party as I always have a thief in my party in almost every RPG. I also like how the game does not appear dated much. I tried playing Wild Arms recently and had to stop about 30mins in. I just could not deal with how dated it looked. I'm having a bit of a hard time believing that Squaresoft stated this was the perfect RPG. I may be too early in but the story is not capturing me a whole lot. The best points of the game for me are the music and battle system. Feel free to post your thoughts, opinions, or feeling on the game, story, music, whatever! Lets have a good discussion

I'm not the biggest fan of chrono cross. It's a great game, but I find it difficult to connect with the game's characters. Music is nice, and combat is solid. The graphics for it's time were also very nice, but I find that the art style isn't as charming as Akira Toriyama's classic style. Overall its a great game, but not for me. |

Even if you only watch the opening, that would still be acceptable lolI played through a bit more of the game and got to the "temporal vortex." I don't believe that's any spoilers but the entire world was a hand drawn painting. It looked like the main character was literally cast upon a painting in a museum. It was pretty wild. I do agree that it's hard to connect with any of the characters. Luckily one of them that I picked, "the fairy," has a tie in and with a minor part of the main game. I also chose the rocker's path for breaking into the manor but he slowly has absolutely no relevance at all, despite the reasons he's joined. I'm trying to find some characters that I like their battle style and also have decent stats as that redeems some of it for me. |

The music for this game is astounding. Yasunori Mitsuda did a phenomenal job with the sound track. I remember the first time I played the game. I had to stop playing on the overworld map for the 'Another' world theme and sit there and listen to that song for about 45 minutes or so. I then turned off the game and went to bed. A good plan to focus on only a few characters. You'll have to adjust for certain parts of the game and there will be some very tricky parts in the latter half of the game. One boss battle in particular, if you are not prepared, you will have a frustrating time. However, it is a very powerful scene and rather depressing, but really greatly done. I wouldn't focus too much on the connection between Trigger and Cross. It's kinda weak and there are a few interesting connections. Wild Arms is a bit dated in the battles, but I really enjoyed the game. The element grid can be tricky and there's something about it you should keep in mind, but to say more would be spoiling. Glad you're enjoying the game so far, and hopefully, you will continue to do so. |

The opening theme song to Chrono Cross is one of my all time favorites. I also think the turned based combat engine is the best of that era. I really enjoyed it! |

HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA....Chrono Cross... If you know my gaming tastes, you would know i have an undying love for Chrono Trigger, and a hatred that burns stronger than the sun for Chrono Cross. The plot is just horrible, if you liked any of the characters in CT, Chrono Cross is a big FUCK YOU. They pretty much piss on everything that was amazing in Chrono Trigger. They screw over all the charecters from CT, they make the battle system slow as hell, they make so many charecters that the most character development in the game is a different accent, the world sucks, nothing is memorable, etc. CC does a lot of things that pissed me off and I can't stand this game. I'm not an idiot though, and i know it does well in certain aspects. It looks great, the music is fantastic as always. A lot of people sing praise to the combat system, but im not a fan... Too slow. The Opening is a stellar song. I've never finished the game so maybe i should give it another shot... If it doesn't annoy me as much as it did the first time. I stopped a bit after the 2nd disk started. Edited by RockmanDash12, Jul 30 2013, 01:05 AM.

Chrono Cross is by far my favorite game of all time. I played it so many times as a kid, and have it downloaded on my Vita. Sticking with a select group of characters is your best bet (some people complain about the sheer amount of playable characters in the game, but it makes replaying the game that much more fun). I hold the game in higher regard than Chrono Trigger (though I really do love Trigger); they're different games, and that's what some people have a hard time accepting. It takes place in a different part of the same world. Sure, it has overlapping characters and plot-points, but they're completely different games. Oh, and Yasunori Mitsuda's soundtrack is to die for :| |

I had a similar moment with the Another world theme. I actually left it on while I slept and I slept pretty good lol I'm moving into my new house at the moment so all my game systems just got packed up but I'm not a huge fan of the new main character and the characters you get shortly after. I never liked any of the darkness class characters or magic and focused a lot on wind based magic. Also miss my thief ![]() @NostagiaKing: I'm not a fan of SNES era RPGs but I loved Chrono Trigger. It's a toss up on which is better to me, I don't think I can choose honestly. I don't care that they are so different as they both have their charm. @Rockmandash: I think the game is definitely worth a playthrough but I definitely can understand the points you made. I do feel that the battle system, music, and some of the graphics overshadow the weaker points of the game. I still think it's great though lol. From what I've read the game ends shortly into disc 2 so if you made it that far and didn't like it, it's probably not worth it. If anyone thinks differently, please post it! |

Yeah, the change up is pretty difficult to manage at first and you'll have that pesky boss battle I was referring to earlier before too long. As for the thief, there are others out there, well, if you chose a certain path, if I recall correctly. |

Cross is a good game, but I do think it falls a bit short of Trigger. The combat is good, but a bit on the easy side (save for a handful of boss fights). The plot won't make sense unless you're on a second play through, and it's ties to Trigger are spread to thin. The only aspect the Cross truly outdoes Trigger in is the music. I guess my consensus is that Chrono Cross is a good game, but not a very good sequel. Take that however you will. |

What a sad tale from me it is. Even though I never played Chrono Trigger, I still wanted to play Chrono Cross. I remember back in High School when I got my first taste of internet, I looked up info on Chrono Cross. Then years later my bro bought a PS2 and eventually I got Chrono Cross from EB Games. I played that game until the very end and suddenly...the credits rolled. That's right, I beat the game and the credits rolled and I was disgruntled at this. I was expecting a conclusion and I didn't get one. Then I learned that you could get multiple endings if you play it again but I was so dissatisfied with the first outcome that I didn't care. I wanted to conclude the first gameplay. I wanted to see it to the very end but the game just cut me off, like it didn't care about all those hours I put into it. And that's my story. |

The opening to Chrono Cross is rivaled in excellence only by Final Fantasy VIII's opening cutscene. Liberi Fatali and Time's Scar are two of the greatest single pieces in video games, and it's quite spectacular that they both appeared in Squaresoft JRPGs on the PS1. Gotta love Mitsuda and Uematsu! |

Honestly, I have never heard of that website. Sounds pretty spiffy though. I think the game would have been received better as a whole if they didn't try to make it connect to Trigger. I mean, that's a hell of an act to follow. I think if the game was titled differently it might have helped, but might have doomed the game to PS1 RPG obscurity. And as ChronoLink said, Cross has one of the best openings for a PS1 RPG. Awesome awesome stuff:D |

I'm finally settled into my new house after a week a moving. Haven't had any time to come on the forum or play any games but that will change soon! I want to get back into Chrono Cross and finish it. I checked out that compendium and it cleared up a lot of questions I had during Chrono Trigger but I got a little ahead of myself and read some of Chrono Cross's. I spoiled a bit of it for myself :l but not enough for me to have the story ruined. I'll be reading it in full once I finish it though, the site was awesome |

Time for resurrection! I beat Chrono Cross about a month ago and it has now joined one of my favorite games of all time. It originally was a replay but I had almost no concrete memories of playing it originally. I had a blast playing through it and it just had a ton going for it for me: Follow up to one of my favorite super nintendo games, even if it's not a direct sequel Some of the best music I've heard in a video game Battle system - I love unique battle systems, keeps RPGs interesting for me Other dimensions and time travel elements in the story I may be a bit weird for liking the story, since it is hard to follow and doesn't really explain much until more towards the end, but damn. |

I still have to play Chrono Cross, but I look forward to it. I have heard some great things and some not so good things, but at the end of the day we all have to make our own opinions. I doubt it will match Chrono Trigger, but I will not expect it to. |
