Every night I leave the office at work, there's always a spider that's made a giant web outside outside my door. So every day I take sticks and rocks and throw them at the spider until I break the web completely and kill the spider.

:l

I'm also becoming a home owner in less than a week. I'm not terrified of spiders or anything but I'm tired of seeing them and walking through webs. Does anyone have some advice to keeping them away?

I live in a really rural area and my dad uses some kind of spray inside the house/on the porch/in the doorjam. Every now and then when I'm visiting from college I'll spot a monster in the tub, but not too often. Probably get some type of insect deterrent for your porch or something.

They're still evil eight legged fiends though, so it may not stop them.

Ortho Home Defense

Once it dries it's safe for people and animals but does a good job keeping spiders away.

Gotcha. We live in Florida and it doesn't help that our house has a wooded area behind it. It's just going to attract all kinds of bugs. That stuff looks like normal bug spray though, is that stuff better than the norm?

Be grateful that you got spiders, I had spiders in my apartment and got an exterminator to take care of them. Now I have a fly problem, what I wouldn't give to have the spiders back.

Ortho Home Defense max is a good idea, as it contains a chemical called Bifenthrin, which is an excellent insecticide. If you really want an effective solution, look online for product called Bifen IT, which is a professional grade version of this chemical and what pest control people use. Spray it on the door and the ground in front of the door and you'll be fine. If you want to, you can treat the whole outside of the house with it. Spray out a few inches from the foundation, and then treat any areas in the home that have insect problems. You will have to buy a pressurized insecticide sprayer (found at any home improvement store for $20-40) and mix it yourself, but doing so is not much of a hassle. It is non-toxic to humans, but extremely toxic to most insects. Do it on a sunny day, let it dry, and it will last for 4 months. I learned about this when living in the Southern US, where bugs are major problem, and I saved a lot on profession pest control (which I then spent on games ;).

And nothing is worse than playing some SNES on your old school CRT and seeing a roach running across the floor!
