Gamer newbie needs help; Where to begin learning how to play games

I am a mid-fifties female, Apple lover (MAC, iPhone 5, iPad2) and have never used a forum or played a computer game. So if I screw-up my first forum post I hope you'll understand.

I want to play RPG's but don't know where to begin. What games would help me to learn the basic skills of computer games? Do I begin with RPG's? Or is it best to learn the basic moves from another type of game? I need to begin with baby-steps and my playing time is limited because of my hectic life.

Anyone out there with advice to help me get started?

Well, in my opinion RPGs aren't too hard to get into, you don't need other things to teach you how to play games, they all have tutorials so it shouldn't be too hard to get into. If you want to get into RPGs, iOS isn't a horrible platform, but it isn't the best either, so you might want to get a DS or some other system that has a lot more RPG's.

In my opinion, Pokémon, chrono trigger, and the mario&luigi games are the easiest ways to get into RPGs.The RPGs I'd recommend for iOS are: The World Ends With You, Final Fantasy 3&4, Swords & Sorcery, Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, & Zenonia. If you have a powerful enough mac, install windows via boot camp, then install steam.I'd recommend skyrim, fallout 3&4, all of the Ys games, and Deus Ex Human Revolution.

Btw can a mod move this to general gaming?

If you haven't already I'd suggest watching videos of gameplay before getting into any particular rpg. That way, you can get a feel for things before actually starting. If you need any help installing anything don't feel ashamed to ask. This is a pretty friendly community, I don't think anyone who knows how would mind helping you!

RPGs are great, story driven games. If you only have iOS and a computer, I'd recommend any final fantasy game to you. I know that Final Fantasy VII on the PC now has a beginner mode too. I hope you keep us updated!

I have started with the 90s Final Fantasies as well and have never looked back. Surely played and finished over 250 RPGs now.

On iOS, I definitely recommend the Final Fantasy games. A good start might be Final Fantasy I as one of the first in the genre. Not a lot of handholding though but that is part of the fun, trying to figure it all out! If you have the patience for it!

Good luck, always great to see new gamers!

Ds Games!

I think finding a cheap ds would be a great place to start because of the wide array of rpgs from unique to famous to western to jrpg to turn based to real time, plus it's real easy to carry around with you to suit a hectic life.
