suggestions on acquiring the taste of alcohol

This seems silly to put this topic in this forum but I want some responses and advice from users.

So I just turned 21 on october of last year and I had a small birthday party with my friends. Since I'm legal now (at least here in the states) my friends brought a lot of heavy alcohol (rum to be specific). They all pressured me to at least take a full shot of rum. I gave in and took a full shot of Captain Morgan's dark rum with a tab of flat pepsi. I only took one gulp and I HATED THE TASTE!!! It was one of the worst things I've ever tasted and I never understood how people could enjoy alcohol. I was able to chug and finish my shot but I felt a huge burning sensation in my stomach and felt a little dizzy. I never had any alcohol ever since then.

But now I want to give alcohol another chance. Why? No ones pressuring me to drink? Whenever I go out with my 21+ friends to a bar (or pub), I'm the only one out of my friends that's drinking a pepsi. In fact, I'm the only one in the crowd at every bar thats drinking a pepsi. Everyone in the bar that passes by and stares at me and my soda giving me a weird look thinking "wtf is he under age?". It's quite embarrasing. Hell, there were a few times that the security doorman passes by me, stares at my pepsi, and asks for my id just to make sure I was 21. I can't just not hang out with my 21+ friends anymore. I feel left out. They love going to sports bars and enjoying beer. I can't just tell them to stop drinking and go to bars for my sake.

So like I said, I want to give alcohol another shot. Everyone says that they don't like it at first but its a taste that you eventually get used to and enjoy. It's an "acquired taste". Any suggestions on what alcoholic beverages I should try first? I turn 22 in a few months and it would feel kind of weird if i wasn't a social drinker by then.

Have you drunk yourself shit faced yet? That's the first thing I did when I turned 18 (Finland). Gotta know your limit if you for some reason want to be a social drinker.

As far as handling the taste goes you just have to power through it I guess. I don't understand why you'd want to force yourself into becoming an alcoholic/"social drinker" though. Did you also smoke as a teenager to fit in? Growing up sticking passed out people with sticks and raised by a chain smoking parent your kind boggle my mind.

I don't understand this need of alcohol when you really don't. If your friends smoked weed or smoked crack, would you want to do it too? My advice is to NOT become an alcoholic.

@jr you probably didn't read topic fully. First of all, doing illegal drugs like weed/crack/heroin is NOT in the same nature with drinking alcohol. Second of all, I never said I wanted to be an alcoholic, just a social drinker.

I think Mamonuth hit it on the head really. I don't think anyone should learn how to drink to get drunk, but there is something to be said for knowing one's limits and tolerance if you plan on "going out" often (which I don't recommend). That having been said, I can understand the desire to develop a taste for different alcoholic beverages, which I think is different from tolerating them. You might take a wine tasting class so you can learn the basics of different wines, figure out which, if any, you like, and order intelligently in a restaurant (sounds silly, but this has been helpful to me in a variety of situations). You could also try making a different mixed drink a week, or go to a liquor store that allows you make your own sampler six pack and taste different kinds of beers. Once you do things like this and your tastes develop, you'll know what you like and the anxiety at bars and restaurants will pass. Then again, you may find out that you just don't like alcohol, and that's fine too.

Next time you have shots try out a kamikaze and see if you like it. Most people tend to like kamikazes at least, and it doesn't taste too booze-ey. Fireballs, Jägerbombs, and liquid cocaine are pretty good too (as well as previously mentioned Irish Car Bombs).

Try ordering an AMF. It tastes good and sneaks up on you later if you have a couple :)

For vodka I like Grey Goose, Stoli, Van Gogh, Ketel One, Belvedere...tons more but any of those are good. Just mix it with simple shit like oj, red bull, etc and see if it's to your liking. Doesn't have to be fancy! Beer on the other hand took me awhile to get accustomed to. I love beer now, but it took a good year before I developed a taste for it.

Single Barrel Jack & Coke is also good. Manhattan's. Old Fashioned, etc.

For wine try out Syrah's. They tend to be good. Stay away from ports...95% of them are shit and overpriced imo.

For next day's hangover get a bloody mary :)

I dont care for alchohol, tried when I grew up, don't like it. Too awful taste and I dont see the point in going out.

Don't give in to society, if it is not for you, dont force it.

Ds Games!

It's already been said but if you don't like it there's no reason to take part in it. People do it socially because they enjoy it, and if your not enjoying it, it defeats the purpose all together.

Yep, there may be some stuff you REALLY enjoy but if there's nothing you like then stay away from it. One suggestion I have is to make sure when you're trying stuff you stay away from cheap crap and you might try some wines too, especially stuff on the lighter side like a Moscato or a Riesling. Personally I try to do scotch, wine, and beer tastings whenever possible as I enjoy the history and subtleties of those three. If you can't do an Irish Car Bomb (some people can't drink it fast enough and it just ends up bad) then try a Stout instead of a beer, you may find you like the malty, smooth taste (with a little bit of a bitter finish) to the hoppy characteristics you find in a pilsner or IPA.

Definitely not true... If you want some good alcohol it's gonna cost ya, good quality rum, whiskey, vodka or scotch are pricy. On occasion I drink a glass of whiskey, the best I ever tasted was a 20-something year old Bushmills, that costs around the equivalent of $100, and that's typically the case with alcohol, you want something that tastes good, you have to pay for it. You really can't compare the mass produced brands of alcohol to a brand that produces maybe less than 10.000 bottles a year, because they usually take a lot more time to make it, which definitely improves the quality.

So bottom line, you want some good alcohol, you have to pay.

I also have to disagree with you, amb3Rly, I enjoy the taste of alcohol and actually have never gotten drunk. Of course, this automatically indicates the case that I have very little experience with alcohol. I have enjoyed beer quite heartily, though I haven't really broadened my tastes much (Samuel Adams Boston Lager/Summer Ale, a local beer known as UFO, Alexander Keith Red, and that's about it, really), and outside that...some wine, sake (which I loved), and a Captain and Coke. So I have yet to really test my limits, though I actually kind of have to be careful since alcoholism runs in my family.

I have to say, I'm intrigued by this super-limited stuff, though I'm not sure I'd be willing to pay for it....>_>

Also, to the TC, don't force yourself. Really. I have friends who just plain don't like alcohol, and they just get soda; who cares what the others say? You really shouldn't force yourself, it's really ultimately not that worth it. Keep drinking Pepsi.

I agree with a lot of what people have said. This thread seems like a "How do I give into peer pressure?" topic, when you think about it. I understand you might feel left out at times when you don't drink alcohol but from your perspective, it probably feels worse than it actually is. They probably don't actually pay any mind to the fact that you're not into alcohol, but if those people genuinely ostracize you for not doing so, they probably don't deserve your company to begin with. You don't have to do the same things as them to enjoy yourself.

Just a thought!

I actually really like Mojitos.... I'm a MAN darnit x')

I turned 23 about 2 weeks ago myself, and i've been an occasional drinker since 18 (legal age in the UK). In my experience you can ALWAYS find a drink someone enjoys, but once you ARE drunk you can pretty much power yourself through anything you might not like the taste of lol.

Have you tried drinking any Ciders? A lot of them actually tase great. Good pear cider tastes 1000x better than normal cheap apple cider. My favourite is this stuff:

Posted Image

Each flavour has a great taste, I personally recommend Mixed Fruit ^^ Though I have no idea how available it is in the good 'ol States lol.

If you want to try beers, give Corona a shot (make damn sure youy get a lime with it too). It has a good taste to it, but like a lot of alcohol you might have to just get used to drinking it first lol. I also developed a taste for Budweiser and Guiness(since a lot of my ancestors on one of my parents side were Irish, I felt compelled to love it :P)

If you wanted to go in to what kind of shots/cocktails taste good, I can think of a couple from the top of my head:

Jägerbomb - a shot of Jägermeister in a glass of Red Bull. I don't really like either individually but together? They ain't too bad :P
Refresher - I have NO idea if anyone in America would know how to make this (or what it would be called there) but it is really great tasting.

But like others have said, don't force yourself to enjoy drinking if you don't want to do it. And if you do, just keep trying different things, eventually you will stumble across something you enjoy :) Being drunk can be fun once in a while! Just learn your limits :P

Shots aren't supposed to taste good they are just supposed to get you drunk/buzzed faster. If you want something that tastes good then try mixed drinks or malted drinks. Beer on the other hand is an acquired taste. Domestic beers almost always taste like piss especially the first time you try them. If you drink them long enough you will grow a taste for them (I think it tastes kind of like apple juice). Now specialty beers taste way better. Some are made with hints of raspberry (my favorite), chocolate, orange zest, etc. They still take a bit to get used to but taste way better than the average Bud, Coors, etc.

Hahaha, yeah this is definitely me. I do not like the taste of straight (college affordable haha. maybe I can taste the good stuff someday) alcohol, but if you doctor it up with a lot of fruit and sugar and ice I can tolerate it. Once I get a couple down me I can take on pretty much everything else.

It's a relief to have a few drinks after a couple month's hard work.

Kopparberg really is a good place to start if you aren't into the taste of alcohol, its almost like juice and goes down really easily. Cocktails are good too, but they cost a lot and can really mess you up if you mix a lot of them. I'm a beer and dark rum & coke man myself these days. Nothing beats either of them in my opinion.

Way to lump weed in with crack too guys haha.
