Hi All,

I recently made a list of my picks for the top ten environments in gaming, as I always thought this was a fascinating topic. For the purposes of my project, I considered an environment to be a level, area, or world that has visual and narrative consistency. I then tried to find environments that combined visual beauty with narrative importance and historical impact. For example, 5,7,8 below were chosen for their visual appeal, whereas 2 and 10 were chosen for historical impact on the medium.

My List:

10. Super Mario Bros. World 1
9. Sonic 1-Green Hill Zone
8. Game Center Stage-Capcom vs. SNK Millennium Fight 2000
7. Ding Dong Dell- Ni No Kuni
6. Onett-Earthbound
5. Dragon Quest VIII Fields
4. Zelda-A Link to the Past-Light World
3. Midgar-FF7
2. Super Mario 64-Level 1-Bob-omb Battlefield
1. Cyrodiil-Oblivion

This is, of course, all very subjective, but I would be curious to hear what others thought.

I thought of some off the top of my head, don't judge these as final :P IMO they are all beautiful in their own right. I've tried to add at least one image of each :) (sorry if I don't stick to 10 lol)

Mass Effect: Citadel Presidium. The whole design was supposed to be an idyllic, peacefull area with subtle futuristic design. I'd say they pulled it off fantastically. So relaxing :) Infact the series as a whole has some amazingly designed areas, honourable mentions include the Illusive Man's room, Palaven, the Ilos Archives and Illium.

Sonic 2: Casino Night Zone. Green Hill may be the quintessential Sonic zone, but Casino Night is, and always will be, my favourite. It's just fun. Fun to look at, fun to play through and fun to listen to.

Catherine: The Stray Sheep. It's one of the two main areas in the whole game, and it looks like a place I would actually love to go to relax with some friends irl ^^ Minus all the strange happenings and whatnot.

The Last Of Us: Cityscapes. No area in particular, but the whole idea of nature reclaiming the land has always been interesting to me. It's downright beautiful.

Persona 3: The Velvet Room. I love the design of Persona 4's Velvet Room too, this was a toss up. It's such a pivotal room, both in terms of mechanics and plot. Not to mention the design is freaking cool.

The Legend Of Zelda, Ocarina Of Time: Hyrule Field (sorry, can't find a good picture :P). I don't think I need to explain this, it was such an important moment the first time you explored it. The most amazing thing was all of the landmarks you could actually see from the field itself, Hyrule Town, Death Mountain, Lon Lon Ranch etc...

Fallout 3: The Capital Wasteland. There is beauty in mans own self inflicted destruction.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Morrowind had beautifully alien environments, but in all honesty I never liked how much they clashed with the areas of (boring) Imperial architecture. Yes, there was story significance there, but it just never seated with me for some reason. And Cyrodiil was always just a bit to idyllic and high fantasy for me. Skyrim hit the nail on the head. Not just in terms of architecture, the natural environments look amazing too.

Diablo: Tristram. Eerie, haunting, badass. What more is there to say?

The World Ends With You: Shibuya. I just love the art style soooo much in this game.

Alice Madness Returns: ALL OF IT

Resident Evil: The Spencer Estate. The original version is quite difficult to enjot (graphics wise) these days, but the remake is still beyond beautiful. It remains one of the most haunting locations for any game I have gone through.

This is likely a WIP, I may add more :P

I love the first level in Crysis, its open and there is a ton of interactivity with the level itself, some pretty crazy shit can go down on that beach.

Singapore Sling, Medal of Honor: Rising Sun. Something about using 1 shit kill pistols with only one shot to stealthily kill enemies, and if you miss, it gets messy.

Areas 5 & 7 on Blaster Master, the music compliments the surroundings very very well.

Flying stages on Kid Icarus Uprising, with the 3d on they are absurdly cool to be flown through.

gm_flatgrass on Garry's Mod, so much chaos, that's the map I've spent the most time on causing tons of explosions, building random contraptions and all that.

Everywhere on Just Cause 2, so much to explore, destroy and collect. it looks really good too.

Half Life 2, City 17. The scene where you're going through the apartments and the combine end up chasing you. The first time I played that, That shit had me all kinda freaked out just how they were coming from everywhere, no need for suspensful music or anything, just straight up immersive.

Every level of Mirror's Edge. I don't even need to explain it.

For two people who like to clash heads, you and I see see eye to eye on some of these.

Zelda in general needs a vote.

The original Citadel in Mass Effect was absolutely amazing. They butchered it in the other games.

For some reason Catherine's bar comes to mind lol. It was so simple, yet how many games have a modern bar where a bunch of guys just vent and drink.

Final Fantasy XIII amusement park area was stunning.

TBH this would take hours to think about.
