Favorite Tales Games?

This forum seems to have a fairly strong Tales fanbase. Accordingly, I was wondering which were the favorites in the series. I have a feeling most people are going to say Tales of Vesperia, but I'm curious. More specifically, I'm curious as to why you like a certain title over other titles. Be as specific as possible with your responses in hopes of sparking some discussion.

My personal favorite is Tales of Vesperia. While it's not exceptional by any means, it feels the most polished out of all the Tales games since Symphonia. Furthermore, I'm fond of Yuri's character design. While he's an asshole, and is driven by superficial character developments, I find that Yuri is a fitting protagonist to the game. The combat was also solid, feeling like a natural progression from Tales of Symphonia and Tales of the Abyss. It wasn't anything revolutionary, but it was a lot of fun.

I take issue with Tales of Graces' combat system, citing it as the weakest in the series. However, I find that the plot in Graces is one of the most interesting in some time. Arguably, it's the best plot next to Tales of the Abyss. While Tales of the Abyss, like its brothers, had gratuitous padding, it's story was actually pretty solid. Also, Luke's character development was the most substantial out of all Tales protagonists I've encountered. It was definitely forced but wasn't as superficial as Yuri's vigilante modus operandi, or Asbel's thirst for strength.

To date, I've played Tales of Vesperia, Abyss, Graces, Xillia, Legendia, Symphonia, and Knight of Ratatosk. Unfortuantely, due to accessibility, I've been unable to get my hands on other titles in the series. Out of all the titles, I wish to play Tales of Rebirth the most.

I've played every U.S. released Tales game, and a few of the import titles. Tales of The Abyss is still my favorite, but I can't decide between Tales of Vesperia and Tales of Graces f for the number two spot.

I really can't say. I've only completed Eternia, Vesperia, and Graces F, but I have played through a bit of Symphonia and Abyss. Right now I'm playing Xillia, so I'd have to say overall I'm enjoying that one most so far.

Sadly I've only played through one Tales game and that is Tales of Symphonia. I bought it on a whim based on cover art alone at a Sam Goody. I also bought Sudeki on xbox based on cover art. I started Sudeki, wasn't impressed, and popped in Symphonia. My favorite part of the game is the awesome soundtrack and my girl Sheena. It was a huge game with about 80 hours to keep you busy and I loved every moment.

I've played through a couple of Tales games, but not my favorite series by a long shot. My favorite is Phantasia. A really fun and interesting game from back in the day.

I did enjoy Vesperia, too, but it felt a bit too long and there were way too many false endings. It builds up and you think that's it, but nope here's 10 more hours to go.

I didn't mind Destiny, but I think I like Tales of Innocence R more.

The only one I have played is Tales of Graces F for the PS3. That game is actually a great multiplayer game.

While I've had very little exposure to the series, only playing enough of both Tales of Vesperia and Abyss to warrant a valued opinion, I absolutely loved Vesperia.

Tales of Vesperia:

In my opinion is one of the defining and standout JRPG's of this generation. From the anime-inspired graphics and incredible cut scenes, well-known Tales of action/RPG battle system, memorable characters (a pipe smoking dog, people!!!), to excellent story with twists and turns like no other RPG I've played. Tales of Vesperia is definitely an absolute must play for not only Tales of fans, but anyone and everyone who has ever enjoyed a JRPG.

Did you think I was joking? :D

I must admit, Repede is the one cool sidekick character out of all Tales sidekick characters I've seen. Especially because he's playable. Must love dogs.

Out of all the titles, I wish to play Tales of Rebirth the most.

I think they should make an HD collection of Tales of Destiny and Tales of Destiny 2 for PS3 (the updated versions on PS2). They should also put Tales of the Abyss, Rebirth, and possibly Legendia in an HD collection as well. It would be an awesome way for the Tales fans in the West to play those Tales games we missed.

I have played Graces, Vesperia, Phantasia, Rebirth and Tales of Rebirth is by far the most interesting of those. I found the others to range from mediocre to good. Rebirth on the other hand borders on great.

Vesperia for me. I just like the story and the characters more. Though I've only beat Eternia, Destiny, Vesperia and Graces f. I'll play more tales when I beat Rune Factory for the PS3.

*sigh* if only I could speak Japanese. Although, I've played through Xillia when it was in Japan and I didn't struggle with it too much. I wonder if the PSP version of Rebirth is as accessible.

To date, I have only played Phantasia, Symphonia, Abyss, Vesperia, and Dawn of the New World. I can say easily that Symphonia is my favorite of all of them and will probably stay that way for nostalgia's sake. It's a spectacular game with a great narrative and fun, quirky characters. Abyss would be a close second. Although the more political nature of the story didn't captivate me as much, the characters and world mechanics were possibly the best I've encountered in the series so far. Vesperia was also quite wonderful, with characters good enough to rival Abyss and Symphonia, especially Raven and Yuri, who I consider possibly the coolest, most grounded Tales protagonist. Phantasia is really good itself, though I played the inferior GBA port of it, I really liked the progression of the plot, though I admittedly never finished it.

I have picked up Xillia, even though I don't have a PS3, but I'm looking forward to playing it as well as Graces f at some point soon, hopefully!

Awesome response. I agree with alot of what you said, especially about Yuri being a grounded protagonist. However, you might find that Jude 1 ups him in Xillia. Who knows :P hopefully you'll get around to playing them soon.

Sega Does What Nintendon't

So far out of the Tales games I have played I liked Vesperia the best. The Story and combat are what made it stand out to me when compared to others in the series. I liked Graces f but the combat was lacking for me compared to Vesperia. Tales of the Abyss would be my 2nd pick out of the ones I have played.

I own and have played through most of the Tales games that were released in English...

Tales of Phantasia - GBA
Tales of Destiny
Tales of Symphonia
Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World
Tales of Legendia
Tales of the Abyss
Tales of Vesperia
Tales of Graces f

I have Tales of Xillia but I haven't played it yet... I'm hoping its more like Vespera then Graces f was.

When you do, the PS3 is bursting full with RPGs now. ToX2 is confirmed for the west on PS3. Tons of games from NIS to keep you busy. I wont even want to purchase a PS4/XBO til next year. PS3/3DS has been very generous as of late with new games.

I would have to say Tales of Symphonia, but it has to be said that I have a lot more Tales gaming to do before my opinion holds any weight.

Am I the only one who likes legendia the best? I thought it has the best story out of the tales! Not only that but the combat was fun, I know a lot of people hate the combat but I thought it was a throwback to the first tales of games. Legendia will always be my favorite, so much that I'm bold enough to say it's my second favorite Jrpg next to Persona 3 fes.

So far I've only played Tales of Vesperia and I didn't make it too far.

How are the hand held games? Are they basically like Tales of Vesperia but on a handheld because I think that'd suit me much better.
