Best Final Fantasy

There was a thread about this topic from back in 2010, but it's been long dead. With all of the necroing recently, I thought it might be nice to start a new topic instead of reviving the old one.

What's your favorite Final Fantasy game? It's a question that almost every gamer has been asked countless times throughout their gaming career. For the hardcore JRPG fan, it's like choosing your favorite child; near impossible (but not impossible). Sometimes your answer depends on your mood, or the day you're asked on. Other times it depends on whether or not you've played a particular title recently, or have been listening to a soundtrack from one game. Either way, we all have our favorites. What are yours?

For me personally, I have a soft spot for Final Fantasy X. While some of the older school gamers are critical of X, the game isn't without its charm and magic. I think the world of FFX and its surrounding mythology are really special. The characters as a whole are solid. Some might not be as flushed out as other characters in the Final Fantasy series, but the ones that are done correctly are crafted skillfully. The infamous laughing scene aside, I think the story in Final Fantasy X was really touching. I think that Tidus was a really interesting protagonist, and enjoyed how the focus was mainly on Yuna.

FF V is my favorite. The job-class system in that game is super addictive.

IX really had another underrated story. Not so much the main conflict between Zidane and Kuja, but more so Vivi's existential crisis; that's really what drove the plot for me.

Top 3.
1.) X, I just love the battle system, swapping out Characters,Sphere Grid,Story. I just really love everything about it.

2.)VIII, Whenever i go back to play a PS1 Final Fantasy, this one is it. There is something about that keeps bringing me back. This game gets to much hate IMO.

3.)X-2 Dresspheres , and changing jobs on the fly. The story never bugged me like it did some many other people.

II(US) could be in there as well.

I'm going to be controversial and say Final Fantasy XIII. Everything that game had to offer clicked with me. The story, characters, music, graphics, battle system, enemy design, world mythos...it's all so wonderful, I think, and very few games have had as much an impact for me than XIII. As for second? Ehhhh, it's really gray there...VI and VII are both so good in their own right, it's hard for me to put one over another. IV is also really good.

Sega Does What Nintendon't

Picking a best Final Fantasy is a double edged sword...

Final Fantasy IV is without a doubt my all time favorite video game. FFIV opened my eyes to the genre and showed me how good these kinds of games could be. I own every version of this game and have played and beat it so many times its embarrassing. Nostalgia plays a huge role in FFIV being my favorite game of all time but out of all the Final Fantasy games I think Final Fantasy VI is truly the best! I'm a huge Final Fantasy fan and even my least favorite game in the series would easily stand above most other RPG's.

Final Fantasy VI is without a doubt the best game in the series and would be my number one pick of best RPG of all time. First off FFVI has a huge cast of 14 playable characters that you will meet and have join up with you as you progress through the game. The Story telling in FFVI is so well done that even with a huge cast you still will bond and become attached to the characters. Final Fantasy VI has unforgettable events in the game such as the opera house and some of the best music from any video game ever. For me the best part is the games antagonist Kefka. He is in my option the best villain from any Final Fantasy game and one of the best villains of all time. A lot of people will say Sephiroth is the best villain from a Final Fantasy game but he at least had reasons for being the way he was. Kefka is just genuinely evil! He more or less becomes a god and kills millions of people just because hes bored! Really I could go on and on about Final Fantasy VI because its such a great game and for anyone that hasn't played it because its a 16 bit game your missing out on one the best RPG's ever made.

I'm going to be the one and only person to say Crystal Chronicles. It's a personal favorite, and a very misunderstood game (as most of Kawazu's games are), IMHO.

Although VI is great, too. :)

Where Crystal Chronicles fails is in its forced use of the gameboy advance for multiplayer. I understand the benefits of pulling up those miniature menus as to not bog down gameplay, but it doesn't quite work. Even if a player opened their menu to change their gear while the other players continued to fight, that player would either be attacked or fall behind the miasma barrier. This being said, I did enjoy Cyrstal Chronicles back in its day. Fortunately I had someone to do coop with, otherwise my opinion might be different.

Actually, when someone in multiplayer mode accesses their inventory on the GBA, their character on-screen automatically follows the bucket.

Interesting. It's nice to know that such issues were taken into consideration. It's been a while since I played the game, so maybe my cynicism is what tainted my memories :P. Not that I dislike the game or anything; its actually one of my favorite gamecube games.

Oh, I totally understand that the game isn't for everyone. If someone doesn't like it, I'm not going to try to to convince them that they're wrong. I've played all the way through the game twice in single-player mode, and it definitely requires some patience (a little more than I think most gamers have). It's just one of those games where you either "get it" or it's not for you.

But I think a lot of players tend to focus on its little quirks rather than recognize the many things it does extremely well, and in some cases, it's the quirks themselves that are actually quite brilliant.

I have never really ever beat any final fantasy game, but of the ones I have played I liked Final Fantasy XII on the PS2 the most. The story was complete garbage, but the gameplay was so addicting and amazing.

FF9. Besides the obvious reasons why I love this game (prerendered graphics with beautiful backgrounds, fabulous soundtrack via Nobuo Uematsu, great battle and ability system, and excellent mini games) I love this game because of the interactions between the characters. I mean EVERY character interacts with each other. Quina and Zidane are forced to coexist and seem to have nothing in common, Quina and Vivi find out they have a connection, Amarant and Freya, Eiko and Garnet, Steiner and Vivi, Amarant and Eiko it just keeps going. You truly feel every character has been brought together for a reason and that includes the side characters you control including my favorite: Beatrix. The game is just flawless and timeless in my eyes.

PS I love Quina. I think he/she is a very underrated character and I often use him in my main party for buffing/healing plus a powerful attacker.

My favorite is Final Fantasy X, though I don't necessarily think it is the best.

FFVI is the best traditional final fantasy, while FFVII is the best of the ps1 trilogy in my opinion. FFX just has one of the most touching stories in a game, jaw dropping music, stunning visuals for its time, and probably the best ending in any game(MGS3 coming close).

Final Fantasy X for me! I fucking hate JRPG's but this was the first one to ever win me over, and was the first JRPG I ever completed. The soundtrack especially was really memorable for me, but I liked damn near everything about the game. Still have my copy on PS2 but sadly my system broke so I'm so stoked to replay FFX again in HD soon :)

Having started to replay FFIX this week, the fond memories are rushing back to me. I'm on Disc 3 now, and I have to say its a criminally underrated installment in the franchise. Perhaps I was too young to fully appreciate it upon my first playthrough, but now revisiting it as a highly seasoned JRPG player, I can really appreciate all that FFIX accomplishes. It's easily in the upper echelon of the franchise.

Probably underappreciated by the masses, but the hardcore final fantasy fans tend to favor it.

Final Fantasy 4 is my favorite story wise. It was my first RPG and the first game that immersed me and showed me that games could have deep stories that could tug at the heart strings. If FF4 was a movie I probably wouldn't have cared but because I was so young when I first played it I felt like my party members were my friends and we were in this together, so when something awful happened to them it really effected me and jarred me much more than if I was watching a movie. The worst thing was when you go back to Baron and that "thing" happens to the Twins (no spoilers.) Tellah says something along the lines of "It's no fair..." That was the first and only time I cried at a game because the twins were so young and I was young I related with them a lot. It was a massive "Oh ****" moment and I realized nobody is safe.

Gameplay wise though FF5 is the best. I always love playing FF5. That job system baby!
