What do you think is the best JRPG of all time? This isn't your favorite game necessarily, but the overall unbiased best game.

I would give it to Chrono Trigger hands down. It is a very accessible game with an awesome world, great characters, a maverick in storytelling for its time(still holds up), and stunning visuals. It nearly perfects everything you want out of an RPG and it managed to give you everything you want without being overly complex.

It isn't my favorite RPG of all time, but there is a reason why so many people consider it the best. I don't think a game will ever top it, as it was the complete package.

EDIT: How could I forget about the music? That was great also.

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind.

Fallout 1 and 2 are my favs but Morrowind to me is the definition of a fantastic RPG. Freedom to go where you want, steal what you want and kill who you want. The freedom to complete quests in any order you see fit and to level your character in any manner too, increasing your stats in acordance to how you use them is still the best method in my opinion. You are never made to attach yourself to any handful of characters and the main emphasis is actually on the many quests and people, not just one main group or quest. I find this to be a far more immersive world than most and is why i start a new game at least once a year.

It's main fault is the initial understanding of how things work in the game, it may take many re-loads and restarts before you fully grasp the games mechanics but it really pays off in the long run.

Just realised this said JRPG, not just RPG hahaha. Must have read that a little quick. Dumbass...

Maybe Secret of Mana for me, i love the Co-Op play and the music is just phenomenal. I much prefer the action RPG style to it over turn based battles as i think it breaks up the usual monotonous gameplay that ends up boring me to tears in most JRPG's.

PS. Morrowind is still the best... :P

I also considered TWEWY, but when I think of a "pure" JRPG I think of turn based battles, and TWEWY's battle system is just insayneee.

It's close but I'd say Final Fantasy 4 or Chrono Trigger.

I agree with the OP, Chrono Trigger is as JRPG as you can get. That or Final Fantasy IV. It best represents turn-based JRPG combat that many series have used and perfects it. Perhaps it best showcases the 16-bit era.

For the PS1 era I would go with FF VII and for the PS2 (sixth gen) era I would go with Persona 4. Jury is still out on the best and most accessible current gen JRPG...

I would probably say the best JRPG I have ever played but is not necessarily my favorite JRPG is Final Fantasy VI. That game is a masterpiece. The graphics and music are outstanding. The gameplay is old school traditional turned based JRPG gameplay goodness. It's just an all around great game. So if you haven't played the game, the cheapest way to play it is to download off the virtual console on the Wii. On their it's called Final Fantasy III though....
