I watched your video, and it's an admirable idea, but I'm sad to say I don't think $15.000 is even close to the amount you'd need to make this a viable business. Speaking as a gamer, the only reason I'd visit a video game museum was to see the ultra rare collectibles, stuff like the first Pac-Man machine, Stadium Events and so on, stuff that I wouldn't be able to get my hands on. And to get that kinda stuff, you need a lot more than $15.000, Stadium Events alone is worth more than that. You also need housing, advertising, insurance and so on.

Save your money. You are what, 16-17? I promise you, that if you do this, you'll regret it when you're older.

There is already a video game museum. It's called Gamester's House.

I didn't watch the whole video, but museums by nature are not huge money-makers. They receive funding from donors and the government to exist; and when they're private museums, it's literally just from donors. They're non-profits, generally the money that goes into them is just to keep them running, breaking even and on rare occasions being a little bit in the black; oftentimes they have to shut down. I would strongly suggest you not do this as you're young as lol_pc pointed out and don't exactly have a large collection; even if you're going into it with multiple people, it just is a lot more trouble than it's worth.

What about souvenirs? Don't they make money off of that?

I enjoy going to Museums to see not only rare and beautiful things, but to be educated. For Example, the Mercedes Museum in Stuttgart is one of the best museums and it is for a product.

Nintendo should make a Museum in Japan. Nintendo World was one of the biggest disappointments. A video game museum needs to be made, but it will cost a hell of alot of money to do it right. The museum needs to represent the product. A bright arcade vibe and high quality displays/plaques would be amazing. Pre-recorded guides as well as on sight guides are generally the quality standard.

Sort of, but getting that stuff made has production costs in and of itself, and oftentimes that just helps keep the museum afloat.

Also, getting souvenirs made is clearly not in the budget here, considering they're estimating $15,000 on costs to get this done.

If you are going to do it, you had better do it well. With that budget, you aren't going to be doing it well. Sorry guys. Nintendo could afford one and make it intensely good. I'm not sure how much money it would generate them though.

Its a bold idea and possible. But your still quite young and still have much to live. Wait until your much older (like when your completely bored and your kids are a lot older), have a lot more money (like a considerable income), and enjoy life a lot more.

I would say have every system in glass cases in order of release with information about the system. It would be awesome.

You should keep doing youtube and show off your collection there. Take everyone's advice and do not go through with this.

I'm with everyone else on this one. Continue saving your money and do not make any decisions about this until you are older and fully see the cost of living.

If you can't make a museum, take solice that there is a video game museum in Rome. I just discovered this and I thought I'd share. Maybe you can learn something from it:

Okay, bear with me a second here.

I like your motivation for doing this, but as everyone's said, it's going to be a losing proposition from a money standpoint. I look at it like this:

Fact: Physical copies are on the way out. We collectors might not like it, but it will happen within the next decade or so. Many physical copies will probably be disposed of in the ensuing years, and those left will disappear into private collections. We're already hearing about Gamestop field destroying the artwork from PS2 and DS cases and only keeping the discs or carts. This sort of thing will continue, and a lot of these loose games will eventually hit the bin along with all the CDs, DVDs, and BluRays that will then be readily available digitally. Digital will be cheaper or equivalent in price and will occupy no physical space. People will flock to it in droves just to un-clutter their homes.

This *might* make physical copies into very sought after items that a museum, say one focused on old technology, would be interested in years from now. Yes, there will still be a large number of physical copies out there, but they'll be mostly hoarded by collectors--and those who sell to collectors--because of their value, whether monetary or senitimental.

Leave your collection in the hands of someone that you trust won't liquidate it and maybe it can someday be donated to a worthy instituion or organization that will dutifully curate and display it. Then you could contribute to preserving the history of these pieces without going into the hole yourself, and you'll have some motivation to keep on collecting.

Or your kids will have one hell of an inheiritance.
