Back then 4:3 was what it was made in and anticipated to be seen in. 16:9 stretches and crops the image out resulting in images being cut off, such as characters heads. This has been the issue for the new DBZ blurays coming out as well as the Orange Brick DVD sets already released. For old anime, 4:3 gets the whole picture as it was meant to be seen and if you get it in bluray you get an enhanced picture.
