Now a few of you might know I am a huge anime fan and one of the series that got me into anime was Dragonball. And I am a bluray collector.
So Now I just found out about this but Funimation is finally releasing seasons sets of DBZ on bluray.
I was excited as shit because I have the Level 1.1 and 1.2 on bluray and they look fantastic in their native 4.3 aspect ratio. So by reading more on it I come to read this,

Quote:

The Saiyans are coming! These ruthless, intergalactic villains carved a path of destruction across the galaxy, and now they're headed for Earth! The evil Saiyan warlord Vegeta will not rest until he's seized the wish-granting powers of the Dragon Balls for himself! For the first time ever, the Dragon Ball Z season sets are available on Blu-ray! This epic collection presents the first thirty-nine episodes of the legendary series in remastered, high definition quality and 16:9 aspect ratio using frame by frame, pan and scran technology. An elite team of Capsule Corp. scientists worked around the clock to put the greatest anime in history on the cutting edge of modern technology. You may think you've seen all there is to see in the DBZ universe, but you're wrong. Take home this thirty-nine episode collection today, and fire your next Kamehameha in the brilliance of Blu-ray!

Right there pretty much made me wanna stab someone...why the hell is Funimation doing this shit again..I don't even know if I will pick these up. Unless they really freaking wow me.

The problem is that DBZ is an old anime. Older anime was made in 4:3. Making it stretch to fit widescreen TV's means you have to crop the image or cut off important parts of the picture. Doing so results in heads getting cut off etc. Funimation was in the works of making DBZ blurays in the form of the Level sets but unforunetely they were cancelled with only 2 sets released. Those Level sets were HD quality but in 4:3, the way the original animators anticipated. They also made Yu Yu Hakusho blurays in HD 4:3 which is how that original old anime was made. If you own the Orange Bricks of DBZ you notice that those DVDs are in 16:9 and thus cropped. Hardcore fans hated this since there are numerous scenes where pivotal things are missing or cut off. Now if you are a casual fan than the Orange Bricks and these blurays will probably still be a good buy. An annoying thing is that Funimation asked the fans in a poll what they would rather have. 16:9 or 4:3? I'm guessing the casuals outvoted the hardcore because 16:9 is what we will be getting. They stated that even thought these blurays will be cropped they will be implementing a new "pan and scan" feature which should prevent important things from getting chopped off. We will have to wait and see I guess.

Dragon Ball was animated in 4:3, so to get it into 16:9 they had to crop the footage. FUNimation destructively did so with the Z season sets by setting the cropping to the center at all times, then running it through the whole episode, leaving many important details and framing elements removed or obscured, and even reached the point of having entire heads of characters cut off at times, whereas Kai was done with select "pan and scan" framing, which is a step up, but you still lose significant vertical framing, which goes against the original intention, and still messes with the overall visual balance of the framing at times.

A handful of Kai's "reanimated" frames were extended horizontally for widescreen though, but I can only think of a few at the top of my head.
When going to 16x9 you lose 20% of the vertical picture, and gain I think 5% on the sides, which was never intended to be viewed anyway.

Thank God I own the Dragon Boxes. Beautiful 4:3 quality and excellent product presentation. The hardcover guides they come with are great also. The only flaw is that it doesn't include the Faulconer score. If you can live without that score, then hunt down these sets.

Funimation should release the Dragon Boxes for the original Dragon Ball also and the movies. I don't give a shit about GT.

It is a shame they are doing this. I guess they are trying to attract a mass market by making it somewhat modern. I heard the original Blu-Rays were great from all but the most picky of hardcore fans. Maybe they can pull it off and make it look decent? Or they could just end up releasing a slightly upgraded version of the orange bricks.

Dragon Ball Z has a massive fanbase and I am pretty damn most people don't care if it is 16:9 or 4:3. The hardcore care, so I don't understand why they wouldn't just make it 4:3 and make everyone happy. It isn't like someone will go to the store and read the back and be like OMFG THIS IS 4:3 NO FUCKING WAY I AM GOING TO BUY MY CHILDHOOD SHOW I LOVE IN ITS ORIGINAL FORMAT!!!!!!!!

Moral of the story? Just get DBZ: Kai. It's better anyway.

Haha, sorry, I just never really watched DBZ as a kid and going back to it now, there's no way I could slog through the overly-prolonged fights of the original series. Kai cuts right to the action and the story, which I appreciate. That being said, I'm not really the biggest DBZ fan out there, and the main reason I will watch it is because I love Akira Toriyama.

I'd take black borders over cropped video any day of the week. I hear a lot of people bitching about 4:3 ratio's on thier fancy new TV's, i think some would prefer they stretched the video just to fill it up. Madness i tells you, just leave it at 4:3 and be done with it.

God I would love to have the Dragon boxes but they are so damn expensive and some of the boxes are extremely rare.

True. Box number 2 goes for insane money last time I checked. I got really lucky when I got mine. Originally, I refused to get the Dragon Boxes because I wanted the Falcouner score but then I decided to give them a go. Now I am a huge fan of the Japanese and the original score.

Then I checked on ebay and I saw the prices for box 2/4 and I decided to see if I could hunt down the sets in the wild. I ended up going to a shop that buys and resells dvds and they had the entire series there for $35 bucks a set and they were having a buy one get one 50% off sale. I got very lucky.

That's a great deal. If all else fails you can just keep the Orange Bricks for the Falcoulner music.

I will not touch them. My little bro is not a fan of the Japanese, so he will be buying these blu-ray sets regardless if they are widescreen or fullscreen. He wanted the orange bricks, but I stopped him from getting them. I will just borrow his if I ever want to bring back the memories.

Japanese>English, so I don't mind anymore.

I was going to but I just decided against it since Ocean only did what like 53 episodes and I already have the first 3 movies on bluray ...but you never know I might get it later if I have extra money I don't care about spending.

But still Ocean Vegeta> Chris Sabat (Funimation Vegeta)

And No DB Kai is not better than the original I can't stand Gohan's voice in Kai at all it makes me wanna hang myself. and plus you don't get this awesome scene in kai

Chris Sabat was brilliant as Vegeta. It's the only voice I can imagine for Vegeta now.

Chris Sabat is the manliest man who works for Funimation. Only Travis Willingham could possibly compete, and even he doesn't come too close.
