STEAM CONSOLE: SteamOS, Steam Machines, Steam controller

I'm kind of surprised no one made a thread on this thus far. Basically steam made three separate announcements within the span of a week. They unveiled their new Linux based operating system, information on their console(s) that will release in the coming year, along with a trackpad controller.

The consoles will be pre-built devices composed of parts from different manufacturers. From what I've gathered, it's basically for performance of varyingly optimized games. Also, certain consoles will be more beefier, more costly than others.

I know some people are cynical of this controller, as many are with touch oriented gaming devices. I'm personally excited for this and think it has alot of potential. Of course, I doubt Valve has any incentive to prevent people from using the 360 controller, as it has been confirmed that you can still use mouse and keyboard on this console.

I'm going to load Steam OS on one of my older machines, this will be amazing. Great idea.

Steam Machines, will be great for the average consumer, i just hope they don't get too loose and confusing. Personally, I'm not interested.

The controller... idk how it will work bit it looks awkward. I'm sure it isn't too bad and touchpads seem like a good step up from analog sticks, but no DPAD and the buttons....

I've been busy so I logged into steam for the first time in about a week last night and saw all this. I came to the forums today because I knew there would be a thread about it. I signed up for the beta. I want all of this. Well, the controller looks a little funky, but I want a little Steam OS console. I just hope that other things such as Netflix and web-surfing will remain available on the consoles they make, but I don't see why they wouldn't, after all, its just an optimized Linux console, right? Steam's improvements over the last few years have been great.

Wow this is great! That controller is beyond fugly and I will be using my 360 controller most likely, but I have so many Steam games that I can't play currently due to my PC breaking and me only having a Macbook now. I'm going to play the hell out of Soul Reaver 2 and Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines when this launches next year! :D

Its good that valve is finally putting out a console type system so that people who bitch at PC gaming can finally try it out themselves on their couches and shit. Play all dem indie games and stuff. Enjoy :D

The OS? I'll probably either try it on an older machine or a partition of my current machine. Its also good that they're making this, for the Steam Machines of course. It also sounds like a viable HTPC OS if it does run on Linux.

I'll hold my final judgement on the controller since this is Valve, and nobody has used it yet. Just from looks though I'd give it a meh. You never know though.

I am excited about this as well. I am very curious to see what the hardware tiers will be for the Steam Machines. I have heard rumors that the lower tier will be a streaming device that can stream your whole library, whereas the upper tiers will have dedicated GPUs, but will only be able to run nativelyt hose games released for the OS. The controller...well, I'll withhold judgement for now. Overall, though, this is a very smart move on Valve's part. As the Desktop PC wanes in popularity, they needed to figure out how to extend their platform beyond this particular type of hardware, and I think they've done it here....at least on paper. Price will be key though, both on games and the hardware itself. Steam sales on the couch! That will be fun.
