  In this long overdue thread I will scrutinize on the Nintendo love/hate relation that exists within the gaming community. I will quote people, from the apologists to the haters; the defenders to the offenders. Some of the quotes might be controversial, others will be comedic in nature. The comedic ones will primarily include Kharnivore's day to day on-liners about Nintendo over here and at facebook. I will state now that some of my comments are totally just taking the piss, but some are genuine opinions. Don't want people thinking I'm just hating for the sake of hating haha. Given the irrational outcries due to Nintendo game reviews this year it might actually be a good point of discussion, in terms of quality games being put down by mainstream media over zealous fans demanding their favourite company gets higher votes just because they think it should. As long as it doesn't get out of hand it could be quite interesting. |

I've been observing this battle for quite some time, and the conclusion that I've reached is that Nintendo haters will continue to hate Nintendo regardless of what happens, and those who love Nintendo will follow them to the ends of the earth. There is rarely a middle ground in the debate. To be honest, I don't agree with either side. It's become fashionable to hate on Nintendo and I keep hearing the same arguments recycled over and over again: "They don't make games anymore", "their hardware is crap", "they've been screwing over the fans for years" and "They keep re-releasing the same games." One point I'll disagee with is that they keep screwing over their fans. Nintendo fans love their Mario, Donkey Kong, Kirby and Zelda games, and Nintendo definitely delivers with those franchises. Is Nintendo resting on their laurels? Absolutely, but Nintendo fans don't seem to mind. As for the rabid fans, I don't see their side completely either. I understand brand loyalty, but you can't deny that Nintendo has made their share of missteps. The exhaustive wait times for the really desireable titles is unforgivable given how many Mario games they have been shoveling out. The hardware is also placing Nintendo a generation behind, so they aren't really maing an effort to appeal to the more seasonsed gamers who want to play the AAA titles. During the Wii era, this was less of a concern because the console practically printed money, but we're a long way past that now. The Wii U is a good console that is slowly picking up momentum, but not fast enough to make me want to buy one. Some of the arguments against Nintendo can also be said about other platforms. Shovelware? The PS3 and 360 have more than their share. Re-releasing games ad nauseum? How many HD collections have we seen released in the past year? Crap hardware? How many 360's have died on you? You can't deride one system for these sins without applying them to others. Nobody has really done a perfect job. So yeah, I'm kind of in the middle. Nintendo doesn't have the midas touch, but they certainly aren't the turd in the punchbowl of the gaming industry as some might have you believe. |

I love Nintendo when they do something original like xenoblade chronicles, but I hate them when they release any new super mario bros. games. I hate those games.

I pretty much hate Nintendo until something like Fire Emblem Awakening is released, and then I love them again for a month or so. Not a fan of the Wii or Wii U (so far). |

Which reminds of the Wonderful 101 vs GTA V threads that popped up on GameFAQ's Wii U board around the time of both games' released. Also Zelda. 8.8 and 7.5?  I'll be sure to post some quotes from the W101 thing next. Sample: Who needs GTA V when we have Pikmin, W101, WWHD, AND Rayman Legends? We are in the middle of a FLOOD of great next-gen Nintendo games. Why are you people wasting so much time thinking about some last-gen rehash?

Here's a quote I pulled from facebook, since I don't have the person added or asked permission to post this, I'll keep their name anonymous. Of course, I can't really say this is 'hate', rather it is a counter-argument I've seen numerous times against the common assertion that Nintendo saved gaming. Nintendo saved gaming? I hear this a lot. The myth stems from a 2009 press conference when a Nintendo spokesman suggested it might be so. Press ran with it and thus we have an urban legend that exists today. I saw the crash of '82. The death of a fad that took up three years of my life. But I also know the crash only happened in North America. I was in England in 1983-84 and the arcades were still going. The rest of the world market was still strong, with the UK leading the way into the future with comp based games. Keep in mind The Crash happened in North America, people. Not the entire world. That is an important fact. Why people say Nintendo saved gaming blows my mind. First off, three years passed after the crash before we ever heard of the Famicom and most of us didn't see an NES until '85 or '86 -a full fours years later, and let me tell you Duck Hunt....Gyromite...Clu Clu Land...didn't appeal to anyone who was used to Tempest, Defender or Missile Command. They saved nothing -but what they DID DO is appeal to the next generation of gamers, roughly around the ages of 8-14, as the previous market of consumers were now entering college age and moving to comp games. Nintendo recreated a market anew for new consumers. That is very different than claiming they saved Gaming. In fact, I would argue that anyone who claims such a thing does not know the history. In a nutshell, I am really tired of hearing it.

It depends. Nintendo will be doing really great for a while, then they'll start doing things like "What the hell are you doing Nintendo? Stop!" So it's like. I dunno. I don't agree with all their decisions, but at the same time I still love 'em. |

I really appreciate Nintendo, and have a love for them. It's just that I don't think their games hold the same intrigue and charm that they once did. I wouldn't even go as far as to say that their old formula went stale - it's just that they're using this phoned in side scrolling style these days. As a huge Zelda fan, I was disappointing with the past 3 installments (Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks, and Skyward Sword). I'm disappointing with Mario, and Kirby as well. |

Thats actually hilarious when you consider the fact that Rayman Legends was released on literally every current gen console besides maybe the 3DS and that it is the second game in the reboot series, Pikmin is the third game in the series which originated on the Gamecube, and WWHD is an over saturated version of a Gamecube game. W101 is the only new game but it just looks like Viewtiful Jow and Pikmin had a baby. Just wanna say that I'm currently playing, and loving, Wind Waker HD so don't hate me. I've not been a big fan of the nintendo consoles as of late. I've had plenty of fun with some wii games, and don't own a wii u but played some and enjoyed it, however the consoles just don't draw me in so much. On the handheld side of things though, everyone knows how I feel about that. Tons of amazing games on the ds and 3ds, both first and third party. Speaking of which, the 3ds has now outsold the wii in Japan, and the 3ds is still early in it's lifespan.
