Hold on...I'm NOT supposed to play video games to complain about them? What do they expect me to do, actually have fun? Who cares about having fun? Not me, no sir. If I was gonna have fun, I'd sit at home and watch the grass grow while listening to white noise on the radio. Or jerk off. One or the other. |

I get accused of hatin' on Nintendo unfairly. But pull up a chair, and lemme tell you a story guys and gals. I don't know what it is with the people I've come across online, be it due to Nintendo's rich history in America, or just a plain old spate of bad luck. But people just seem to go apeshit over Nintendo. Nintendo seem to have the lions share of fanatics when it comes to our little collecting community we have going on. While SEGA has a few, neither Sony nor Microsoft have anywhere remotely close to the amount of people popping relentless hard-ons over every single offering. One thing you may have noticed about me, is I like stirring shit up. It doesn't matter if I don't have a single foot to stand on. I will stir that shit right the fuck up. Even if I don't agree with what I'm saying, I'll say it anyway just to invoke a reaction. I get bored easily, and it's entertaining to me. Don't judge me. So, given the rabid fanbase, and how easy it is to wind them up and get a reaction from them, it's like shooting fish in a barrel. Endless hours of entertainment. But, that's not to say that I don't stand behind what I say about Nintendo. Lemme just bullet point some shit, for posterity n shit. Mario. That fat fuck and his relentless cast of shittarded lazy ass characters. This is a textbook definition of when flooding the market meets lazy whoring of your product. In the past 2 years, we have had 13 "Mario" titles released(1). (Discounting the Arcade only Mario Kart, but including the Green colour palette Mario known as Luigi) That's a Mario game every 2 months. This includes:
Nintendo fans are keen to point out that CoD, Fifa, Madden etc release a new title every calendar year. But even Nintendo have both EA and Activision beat on this one. Releasing so many games in such a short amount of time proves only to stagnate the franchise, and eventually burn out even the most hardened of fans. I don't think it's unfair to say that with each new installment in such a short period of time, it dilutes the franchise that tiny bit more. Mario games haven't offered any significant depth in a long while. And, with Mario's main selling point being a cat suit nowadays, I don't see them offering any real depth anytime soon. And Nintendo fans dare complain about annual releases of Call of Duty.... The Wii-U. God damn. What an absolute shit wreck this console is. Main selling points include: an emulated version of a cult classic from yesterday, a bunch of games other console owners got a couple of years back, and a handful of other titles that range from good to mediocre. Games that wouldn't necessarily stand out on any other platforms. See: Lego City Undercover, Zombie-U. Good games include Wonderful 101 and Pikmin 3. The outlook doesn't look that positive either. With 3rd parties ditching their support for the ailing console, we're left with more Mario titles, Super Smash Bros, Project X, and Bayonetta 2. While these games have the potential to be significant heavy hitters, that's the extent of the games to look forward to. There's very little else that carries any real weight on the horizon. Which really does not bode well. Couple this with Nintendo's current trend of focusing entirely on the 3DS, and re-re-releasing 1000's of SKUs and limited edition designs for their handheld console. You gotta wonder when their priorities are gunna fall back on their home console. But, leave it to the Nintendo fanboys to vehemently defend their beloved Nintendo. Gobbling down any offering, and calling it candy. Nintendo fans. These are the number one issue I have with Nintendo. These poor, misguided souls honestly think that gaming begins, and ends entirely with Nintendo. Innovation? Nintendo. Graphics? Nintendo. Storytelling and writing? Nintendo, Nintendo, Nintendo. Gaming has SO much more to offer, but these kids refuse to break free from Nintendo. They literally do not know how good everyone else has it. I challenge these people to skip the next regurgitated Mario 2D platformer, and instead use that 60bux on Steam and some Indie titles. See what the rest of the world is up to, and see how good people really have it. Still unwilling to get over the idea that PC gaming isn't just for the die hard fan anymore? Then I challenge you to pick up a 360, or PS3. Grab PSN Plus, spend some money on XBLA, play better Platformers for a fraction of the price. I'm not saying that Nintendo can't do some good shit, cos when they get it right, holy shit do they get it right. See: Xenoblade, Fire Emblem, Pokemon X/Y, etc etc etc. But, Nintendo get far too much of a free pass, and they're been resting on their laurels far too much. Stop buying the same shit year in, year out - and challenge Nintendo to work for your money. Put out some deep shit, inspire them to do another deal with Mistwalker for anopther Last Story-esque RPG. But, if you keep on buying the same regurgiated Mario platformer/sports/party/wankathon, that's all they're ever gunna do. (1)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_video_games_featuring_Mario |

Well, you know what they say, great minds think alike. XD In all seriousness, Nintendo does need to get their act together and get us pumped for some games that don't have Mario as the selling point for their new console. Bayonetta 2, Smash Bros., and the new Xeno game isn't enough. That being said, the Mario games ARE still pretty fun regardless of how samey they are. Mario can't sustain them forever, though! |

Said I'd do this a while back but I've been busy and I'm pretty lazy in my spare time, so it's taken some time. I wanna start by saying I don't hate Nintendo, i just don't think they are all that great. In fact, i think it is the rabid Nintendo fan base that throw me off more than anything. Secondly, some of my opinions may actually echo Andsy's to some degree. Being from the UK, growing up with far more selection than Nintendo consoles and having experienced a far more varied library than just what Nintendo and Sega offered may contribute to this. He made some good points in his post and as he said, be bash the shit out of them via Facebook etc, but it usually is just for a laugh or to counter balance the amount of rabid Nintendo love and almost religious zealot-like defense of their current day mediocrity. With that out of the way i can explain a few of my main reasons for "HATING" Nintendo, or not thinking they are all that special. Also, those Nintenbro's... "Nintendo Saved Gaming!" It's a very common misconception that Nintendo "saved" gaming after the arcades started to crash in the US and made them popular again. I'm sure this may have been true in the US but i can assure you that no-one was calling the death of games here in Europe. While we did have the Atari and arcades here we also had the ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, IBM PC, Amstrad CPC and a bunch of other machines including the Amiga and Atari ST in the 2nd half of the decade. Quite a lot of homes had one or more of these machines due to the fact they could be used for word processing amongst other things and parents saw them as a worthwhile buy. All the kids wanted them for was games games though, and at prices ranging from £5.99-£20.99+ this could be as expensive or inexpensive as you wanted. As well as buying games these machines gave you the ability to code your own games put them onto disk or cassette and give them to a friend, or if you were lucky enough then maybe a publisher. This happened more than you would think and i think it really helped construct some sort of bond between the user base and the companies publishing the titles. Games were cheap, plentiful and were in no way showing signs of "DYING" before Nintendo barged into the scene. "Nintendo has/had all the best games!" Nintendo had a nice friendly little clause in their contracts that restricted game developers from making their games for any other console on the market, except for other Nintendo machines. Could you imagine that today? Imagine if Microsoft or Sony tried something like that now, the outrage and the backlash would be incredible. Given how much Nintendo fans are crying about 3rd party developers not supporting them so much now...the hypocrisy is so potent it makes me want to be sick in my mouth while i roll on the floor laughing. The only reason they dropped the clause is because Sega forced a little legal pressure and Nintendo knew it probably wouldn't work out well for them in the end. Cause Nintendo hate courts, wait a sec... "Nintendo are the Good Guys of the Gaming Industry!" The above section explains one big reason why they are not "good guys". Hell, that's not even good business! It's worse than anything EA have ever done and is worse than the current trend of big publishers buying out smaller dev teams. More reasons: Screwing Sony over hardware being designed for the SNES They didn't even tell them that they were going to turn around and go with Philips and they eventually found out through other sources. More bad business! They cited that the reason was because Sony wanted some royalties on games made for that hardware...and Nintendo doesn't like to share it's cake, just like spoiled brats at their own party. Trying to sue Codemasters for inventing the Game Genie. This doesn't even make sense! They claimed that it would damage hardware and software, all lies of course(lets face it, the 72pin connector is more notorious than the RROD). I'm sure they just weren't happy that some people might actually get some joy out of some of the shit games they slapped their "Seal of Quality" on. Staying with Cartridges on N64. Piracy is usually the excuse given for this decision, but i don't personally buy it. Nintendo made a lot of cash making their own carts and were too stuck in their ways to make the necessary advances needed to keep what 3rd party support they did have. It cost devs a fortune, cost you a fortune but as long as Nintendo are happy, eh? Completely shafting PAL Regions of all the major RPG titles on NES and SNES. What the fuck was this about?! Look at any top NES and SNES games and i bet the RPG's there were not released here, look at any top 10/20 RPG's for those consoles and i bet only 1 or 2 made it here to the UK. Think how upset people get over Terranigma or the Mother series of games and just multiply it by 10. They have probably done more dickish stuff but i'll leave it there. "I'm sick of all these sequels and goddamn rehashes!" Nintendo are the kings of rehashes and re-releases and reselling you the same shit over and over and over again. Read Andsy's post about it, i'll just get angry and pop a blood vessel. "But Nintendo make quality titles!" Yeah, they have quite a few good games. Most of which never really glitch or feel broken etc which is really nice, but if you have been making the same game for 20years then you have no real excuse to fuck it up. Many Indie developers are making quality platformers, puzzle games, RPG's and Shmups and selling them at budget prices on a regular basis, many of which more than compete with Nintendo's offering these days and are available on almost every platform you can think of. Just because they make a "few" nice games does not give them the right to be high and mighty or even justify splashing out £250+ just to play Mario and Zelda again...for the millionth time... Andsy hit the nail on the head, go out and look at what is available! The selection of top quality titles available is phenomenal and is so damn cheap too, it's a wide wonderful gaming world out there and it's possibly in the best shape it's ever been as far as a gamer and a consumer is concerned. POSITIVES!!! OK, I've had my rant. Like i said, mainly it's the uber zealous fanboys that know nothing about gaming other than Nintendo that fuck me off. Nintendo itself are awesome in a lot of ways too... Their games are consistently well polished. They make the best goddamn handhelds, apart from the Game Gear. Game Gear is King. They have some fricken awesome controllers and i like them all until the Wiimote...that thing is junk in my opinion. The NES has one of my fav sound chips, i could listen to that thing all day. More than made up for the shitty color palette and awkward screen resolution. ![]() They are generally consistent and really stick to their guns. I can bitch all i want about them but they are consistent at what they do. I say they are consistently cunts, fans think they are consistently awesome, Gamespot thinks they are consistently 8.0 Conclusion I don't hate Nintendo, i just don't think they are the biggest fish in this massive ocean that we call the gaming industry. I get that some people are in that Nintendo bubble and are scared to try something new, just like MS and Sony fans, but the industry contains a lot of passionate developers making fantastic games for you to enjoy. They love making them, they love hearing the feedback from happy/unhappy gamers, they are the people that grew up like we did playing Nintendo/Sega/C64/DOS games like we did and now they are bringing that fun gaming experience to us all over again. Not everything is touch based mobile phone crap and not everything feels like a cheap ass copy of something else. It's not all retro Pixel art and it's not all Angry Birds. Look at the whole of the gaming scene and you will see that there is a reason Nintendo consoles aren't really all the captivating anymore. |

Gamegear > GB? no. Game gear basically was a Master System that ate batteries like the 1/2 ton man eats potato chips. Also, none of them work anymore 0.o I still need to get a cap kit for one of mine. |

I haven't really been looking for Nintendo love hate material, so I haven't really had anything to post. I did stumble upon this, which resembles my sentiment, and isn't really on either side of the fence, just more ambivalence towards 3D World:

I used to hate Nintendo because I was a sega/Sony fanboy ( even though sony killed sega) but I've opened my mind and have fell in love with Nintendo and Mario. I don't get why people hate on Nintendo when they are probably the least greedy and most innovative of the three competitors. |

I can say that the Wii was the first time Nintendo ever really disappointed me with a console or it's library of games. Thinking back it mainly was due to the hardware not feeling next gen at the time like the PS3 and Xbox360. It's almost like it was the GameCube 2.5 only with motion control and an ungodly amount of shovelware. However my eyes were opened on the system by our very own Majinpowers. Go read his pinned topic in the Wii section where he pretty much wades you through all the crap to show you the GREAT games that are to be had on the system. Eventually my entire Wii collection will pretty much be those games he recommends. It's a great read. I'll link it below when I have a chance to get on my laptop. |
