Criticisms towards JRPGs

I want to hear some of your criticisms towards jrpgs.

For me, one of my criticism is some dungeons feel like generic labyrinths which you're just going around to get to chests or the end point.

Another is some games, the random battles are so frequent, you can't go five steps without going into a random battle.

One of my biggest criticisms, and the reason I stopped playing JRPGs altogether since FFX, is that there has been very little evolution in the genre, specifically the combat systems. If you take a look at WRPGs, there has been drastic changes in the time since FFX, not only just to the WRPG formula, but now we're seeing a lot of hybrid games that contain both elements from WRPG, FPS, TPS and even RTS. You just don't see the same level of change in JRPGs, and a lot of JRPGs where I hear people claim they have a whole new combat system, all I'm seeing is marginal changes. There has been a few exceptions to the rule, NIER, Ni No Kuni and Dragon's Dogma, and while those games are great by themselves, you just don't see that evolution in the rest of the genre.

I use to love JRPGs, and I want to again, but before I do that they need to reinvent the genre.

They're just too long and repetitive for me. Also bad stories and horrible characters that often do nonsensical things for no reason but to advance the story.

edit: And extremely annoying little brat characters and I just don't understand why. Why are they in every jrpg?

It's definitely the frequency of random battles. This is why I loved chrono trigger and lunar so much. Seeing the enemies and allowing me to decide if I want to battle or not is the best way in my opinion.

Ds Games!

I generally like the story and characters in them, especially the dragon quest games. The things I dislike have already been mentioned. The frequency of random battles in certain games is ridiculous, and certain games stretch on a bit long, or at the very end at least. I don't mind a bit of grinding here and there in games, but it annoys me when I make it to the end without any abnormal amounts of leveling, then all of a sudden I need to put an extra five hours in grinding to kill a final boss.

I definitely agree with everyone before me who has pointed out the annoying frequency of battles in many JRPGs. Not only does this slow down the pacing of the game, but it discourages people from exploring, which is usually my favorite part of any RPG. Additionally, developers seem to believe that every JRPG has to be an arbitrary, excessive length. Often by the end of the countless hours, I have no desire to go back and complete optional goals or sidequests when I otherwise love doing as much as possible in a game. Other than that, JRPGs have this charm about them that I just can't resist, and they're still among my favorite genres.

The frequency of random battles in some games/areas of JRPGs gets on my nerves at some points, but if the game is good enough (Lost Odyssey or Golden Sun, for example), I am pretty forgiving of this, especially because I understand that every battle I fight earns me more and more experience so I don't get stuck.

Also, missables in JRPGs can be pretty disappointing, mainly because of the overall length of the games. Sometimes there are really excellent items or interesting sidequests that are only available for a limited time, and I'll go past them not knowing they exist whatsoever. Then when I find out about them through conversations outside the game or guides, I get disappointed because that sidequest in question recently became unavailable, and I am like 40 or 50 hours into the game.

I've really gone off Jrpg's over the last 10 years, i find myself being entertained for maybe the first 10hrs or so and then i just want to stop playing. I'll explain few of my main reasons for it.

Forced Linear Progression

I always find that i'm being funneled down a path in Jrpg's, having been spoiled by open world rpg's from a young age i always found the linear paths a little constrictive and it directly effects the joy i get from the game. Sometimes i want to spend a bit of time walking around just soaking up the environment without being fenced off and having to endure...

Random Battles

Not in all Jrpg's but most of them for sure. It's a really annoying delay when you are trying to work through dungeon or just get to another town, yet at the same time i feel they are nver common enough when you are trying to grind exp and raise your levels. It just seems like a very archaic method of having battles in a game.

Massive Tedious Stories

This is more of a personal grudge than anything. I'm sure a lot of people like the plots and stories in most of these games but i just find them unbearable most of the time, usually based around a bunch of people i don't like trying to achieve a goal i don't care about. I think that says more about me than the games themselves to be honest but i always find myself just getting bored of massive twisted and convoluted stories.

Milking Extended Game Time

Could have come under the tedious story section but i felt it warranted it's own explanation. Quite frequently what should really be a straight forward mission or objective ALWAYS gets derailed by some ridiculous event and inevitably draws out the game in a way that isn't enjoyable at all. Some games out there require 90hrs to finish up the main story, if you took out all the needless story twists then I'm sure it could be cut down 25% and would actually feel like a stronger game. Given that the good titles usually have side missions and optional mechanics like cooking/alchemy etc there really is no need for that amount of time investment.

I can spend 70-100 hrs in a game like Morrowind and never feel like it was arduous or feel like my mission was being artificially extended. I prefer having the option to do the main quest or one of the hundreds of side quests, or even just go for a walk and explore without being funneled down a path. I like some game mechanics implemented in Jrpg's like alchemy or card battles but generally the overall experience for me is just frustrating and never actually very fun.

Personally, I don't hate JRPGS, I most of the time love them. However, probably my biggest criticism is that some JRPGs take forever to get anywhere.

tedium in any genre really bogs it down for me. jrpgs for me turn me off sometimes because the progression isnt gradual. once a good, seemingly, tutorial system if available is done there is a large tendancy for intuitivity, is that a word?, to fall off a steep cliff and impale the gamer while sliding razor blades up and down the their tolerance level.

some games have exceptions or make it worthwhile. ill take a game like demons souls any day over a final fantasy-esque meat grinder.

mostly the battle system though there are some exceptions like legend of dragoon and shadow hearts
repetitive battles? maybe
yes, brats as heroes.
still i prefer jrpgs. i'm all up for the cuteness and the narrative.

I am kind of surprised that so many people are complaining about random battle system. This isn’t to say I like random battle system, in fact up until this gen I was in the camp that didn’t like JRPGs and I am fairly positive that random battles are the reason why. However I don’t see that many JRPGs with random battles any more. I now they are still out there but they seem to the exception and not the rule.

Length would probably be my biggest complaint. 50 plus hour on a game is a daunting task. If they want to make 50 plus hour of content that is one thing but to require 50 plus hours is another. Even if I loved the game usually by the time I am done with it I am glad to be done with it. And what is with that 3 hour dungeon at the end of the game, just let me beat the game already.

I will have to agree that there are some JRPGs have to character type that I am not fond of, the whiny emo teenage boy being on the top of my list. I still remember when Hope first came on the screen in FFXIII and crossing my fingers that they don’t make him a playable character.
