Do you think Final Fantasy 7 is overrated?

I'm 15 and I played this game all the way through for the first time earlier this year and now working on a second playthrough. I hear from so many YTers and people that this game is overrated. I personally think the game is great. Honestly I've never heard a legitimate complaint about FF7 except the graphics which I will admit are bad, but I think the FMVs make up for it. I also hear that the sequels mess up the story and Cloud as a character, but that has nothing to do with the original game. What do you think? Sure it may not be the best FF game in the series, (the only other FF game I've played is 9, which I think is just as good if not better, but I've only played through that game once too, so maybe once I beat it a second time I'll be able to pick one) but I still think the game is fantastic.

I think people claim its overrated because other people say its the best in the series. I was about 11 when this game first came out so people my age have a very nostalgic felling about it. Many claim its the best simply because it was the the first they ever played.

The main reason why people consider it overrated is because it really catapulted Final Fantasy to the mainstream, even more so than any previous or succeeding game in the series. A large majority of people who grew up with the Playstation have strong nostalgia value for the game. It was the third best selling Playstation game, only topped by Gran Turismo 1 and 2. I think Final Fantasy VI barely made the top 10 for the Super Nintendo, and the only next FF to closely mirror the same success was X.

If ask me, the vocal minority (such as on GameFAQs and NeoGAF) really consider IV, VI and IX to be the best. It usually goes back and forth as to what is the best. That being said, there's still many people who do hold VII to be their personal favorite. It really comes down to preferences though as none of them are truly 'flawed' over another, as some contrarians will suggest.

My feelings exactly. I believe I was in 6th grade when my brother got it and I thought it was great. I think VIII is great as well (despite what seems to be a majority of people stating otherwise). Haven't played IX yet, it's on my to do list lol

Great game? Yes.
Greatest Final Fantasy? Not for me.
That would be FFIV, FFIX, FFXII and Tactics

It is the one I haven't played yet so I won't say it is or isn't the best game. But from what I saw as a young adult when it came out didn't really make me want to play it. My best friend and roommate played the shit out of it and I watched occasionally. I wasn't really into JRPG's other than Shining Forces 1 and 2 back in the day. I would really like to go back to it and give it a fair shake, but its really rough on the eyes.

I think too many claim that its overrated as I probably could having what contact I had with it and not actually playing it. Happens all the time. Does it really matter if it is overrated? Does it really matter if it gets an unfair shake? Like what you like and fuck the rest.

Not overrated, just extremely popular and for that fact people are bitter towards it.

Short answer = yes.

The emphasis placed on Cloud as being this ultimate protagonist is really irritating to me.

in a way yes. I was 13 when I first played it and it was just like the best out there at that time (1997)
well, 15 years later, it's not the best anymore I suppose

Well, considering I've...wait for it...NEVER played the game beyond the opening 10ish minutes growing up, I can't personally say one way or the other. However, I recently and FINALLY got another PSP (the 3000 Assassin's Creed Bundle), I definitely plan to be loading it up with PS1 Classics including FFVII. I'm making it an absolute priority to play through the game! As it stands, FFIX and XIII are my favorites in the series...giving a slight edge to XIII!

No...

I don't think its the best Final Fantasy game out there for me that would be FFIV with FFVI being a close 2nd. The reason I don't think the game is overrated is because of what the game did for RPG's and the genre in general. Its one of the top selling games on the console and the reason places outside of Japan started getting more obscure RPG's. For that reason alone I think FFVII deserves the praise it gets wither you like the game or not! Just imagine what the RPG library on the PS1 and PS2 would be like if Final Fantasy VII wouldn't of came out and showed everyone that JRPG's can be a successful!

Those are my thoughts exactly Majin and couldn't have said it better. Also lots of people bash the graphics of not just FFVII but lots of PS1 era games and base the majority of their opinion on a whole game by 'it's dated and hasn't aged well'. JRPG's are great because of the stories and gameplay and should be judged by such and not graphics.

FFVII was/is a great groundbreaking JRPG that all RPG fans should play at least once. Is it the best or overrated or underrated? I can't answer that for everyone; but I can say it's an outstanding game to play.

Honestly I agree. VII was overrated. The best was definitely X, the characters, and gameplay was just overall better. when the HD edition comes out I can guarantee you that it will have sold better than VII HD

I think that pretty much says it in a nutshell for me. I'm not going to defend it as the best FF because I've only completed three of them over the years (4, 7, and 12), but I really think a lot of people bash it without having any reasons to support their arguments because they like being contrary to everyone else. It's classic hipster: Now that it's popular, I universally hate it.

Personally, though, I like it quite a bit. I was in high school when it came out and had just gotten a PSX. It got me into RPGs more than ever before and spurned my interest in the JRPG subgenre, so maybe that makes me a bit biased. But beyond nostalgia, I still think it's a very good JRPG even by today's standards, though probably not the best.

If your only gripe is the graphics (they were cutting edge in the era of the PSone), check out the Final Fantasy VII release on Steam for PC. They updated the graphics to HD resolution, as well as adding Steam Achievements and cloud saving (pun not intended, but appreciated nonetheless). It's been on sale several times, so check it out there. :)

I believe the beginning is one of the best experiences gaming has to offer, but the 2nd disk kind of drags. Personally, it's my favorite FF, but i'm not a huge FF fan.

Final Fantasy VII was a huge innovative leap from VI. However, when you play the games together today they share more similarities than differences in style and gameplay.

At the time I think it pretty much delivered on the hype, but I doubt it has held up well over time. I haven't played it since my original run through back when it came out.

It was a good enough game and innovative enough for its time that it caught the gaming world by storm at a time when there were a LOT of gamers. It was and is very popular, and my personal favorite also. For a lot of us it was our first JRPG even for the older crowd. As soon as you have enough of a crowd to make a voice that they love something, you will ALWAYS have that anti-crowd full of haters as well as those that just don't care or simply say "meh". To me it's the best game ever made. To someone else maybe it's trash, but those are all opinions that can't really be disputed. It's only over-rated if that is your(generalized "your") opinion and I definitely don't share that opinion. Apparently there is a rather large crowd of us that don't share that opinion, and that, also because of the numbers, can't be disputed. :D

Am I the only one who's favorite is VIII? u.u

As for the overrated question I think that just comes from the general populous raising it up on a pedestal like its a gift to mankind...

Final Fantasy VIII is not my favorite but I really enjoyed it. I don't understand the dislike for VIII either lol

Final Fantasy VII is my first RPG that I've played as well and for that, it's amazing. Just thinking of the memories makes me want to play it again

I've got a few friend who stand by VIII as the best. The new PC version of VIII on Steam looks really nice, I'm considering it :)

Anything that popular will have its haters. It's a brilliant game (and my favorite in the main series behind VI) and it deserves the high regard it has. Is it a flawless game? Of course not, there's no such thing, and while the main storyline might not strike all the right chords the sheer depth of the world and secrets buried (sometimes deep within the ocean) within really helped to boost this game into the "instant classic" category.

Let's not forget that FFVII was the first FF game to be released in Europe. Also, the only Squaresoft game that I recall that had been released in Europe up until that point was Secret of Mana. Needless to say, the hype for FFVII was massive as we had been drooling over import reviews in video game magazines of FFIV, FFVI, Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG for years, hoping for localizations (at least, I was :P ).

Having that said, my favorite FF game is V.
