With the year drawing to a close, and most movies have been released, it's time to reflect on which were your favourites!

My list, in no particular order:

World War Z: Probably my favourite movie of the year, I thought it was a unique take on a zombie apocalypse, and you really get the sense of the scope of the infection, because it isn't limited to a few news broadcasts. And lastly, this is one of the only zombie movies where you aren't questioning why the military couldn't contain it, because you see how agile and manueverable the zombies are. Excellent movie.

Pacific Rim: Loved this movie, mostly because of the sheer awesome battles

Gangster Squad: Great movie with talented acting and a good story.

The Last Stand: I loved Arnold in his 80s and 90s action movies, and IMO this is another great one to add to the list.

Monsters University: Loved the original, loved this!

R.I.P.D: Funniest movie of the year IMO

Man of Steel: Without a doubt the best live-action Superman film to date

Despicable Me 2: Just as funny as the original

NOTE: Have not watched The Hobbit part 2 yet, but I suspect it's gonna be up there with the rest of them

Some of my favorites would be the same, but a few differences:

-You're Next (my goodness, I thought I had lost nearly all hope in horror movies, as I think it's fair to say that in the last decade its been more about gore and guts than actually trying to creep people out. Well, while You're Next didn't necessarily scare me, it was one of THE most intense thrillers I'd seen in a long while. Reminded me of the earlier Scream movies, which I also love. Definitely a must-see for any horror fans out there!)

-World War Z

-Gravity

-Thor 2: The Dark World

-Despicable Me 2 (Not as memorable as the first, but still had me laughing hysterically multiple times!)

-Monster's University

-Star Trek: Into Darkness (every bit as good as the first, if not better!)

-Fast and the Furious 6 (yeah, these movies are crazy, over-the-top insane, but they're an absolute blast to watch and I'll continue to give them my dollars to see them in theaters! RIP PW!)

-The World's End (quite possible the funniest movie I've ever seen in my life, not even kidding)

There are still SO many from 2013 that I still need to see too!

Oblivion - Great scifi movie, one of my favorites of 2013. Definitely recommended, but go into this blind without watching any trailers or looking at the cast or you will be spoiled
The Place Beyond the Pines - An interesting movie split into 3 acts, kinda long but I really enjoyed it. I'll say the same about this one, try not to watch any trailers
Pacific Rim - It's giant robots fighting giant monsters, what else can I say? Good visual effects and action
Fast & Furious 6 - relewis2011 said it best
Now You See Me - Some people didn't like this but I thought it was entertaining
Star Trek Into Darkness - Loved the first one, this one's pretty good too
The Great Gatsby - Never read the book but I found it was a good movie, odd choice in music though..

Looking forward to watching Gravity after all the praise it's getting

Man of Steel!! The pacing was a bit off at times, but damn that movie was awesome!

Loved Monsters University <3
World War Z was enjoyable. I wasn't expecting it to be very good but I was surprised :)

Honestly that's about it for me. I didn't see too many movies this year, and the other ones I saw were pretty dumb.

The Wolverine was OK.
Fast and Furious 6 I was pretty drunk for this and it seemed okay, but I mostly just remember the 45 minute runway scene, Gina Carano getting killed with a spear, and stuff not relating to the movie lol.
Pacific Rim was really stupid but I enjoyed the CG in it.
Iron Man 3 was boring.
The Conjuring sucked and wasn't scary at all.
I watched Oblivion on my flight to London, and I want those two hours of my life back. That movie was fucking awful. I was hammered on never ending wine on my flight and I still hated it.

Personally I thought Gravity was one of the most boring movies I've ever seen. It has some of the best special effects I've ever seen, but it was so BORING.

Hoping to see Anchorman 2 and The Hobbit this week :)

in order from best to worst of what i saw:

the hunger games: catching fire; this was an amazing adaptation of the greatest book in the series, and it got almost everything from the book in it (it even did some parts so much better) and it way surpassed the first film.

kick ass 2; huge kick ass fan, and I was so happy when I saw this and that it was not dissapointing at all, again miles better than the first.

gravity: I was really surprised by how much I loved this film, and how good it was, but the commercials it seemed like it could happen in 5 minutes, but they showed us, they made a amazing film out of such a simple concept. Bravo whatever your name is who created this, bravo.

star trek into darkness; what can I say? I am a huge star trek fan and these recent films are amazing, I just really hope we get another show next.

iron man 3; not as good as 1, but better than 2, and it definitely had the best 3D of any film I saw this year.

the heat: definitely the funniest movie of the year, and it had great casting, acting, everything, an overall amazing movie.

despicable me 2; and yes another example of the sequel being miles better than the original, this was a very good year for sequels. (of course the originals for all of these mentioned were amazing too)

white house down; I was very entertained by this one, not amazing but still a great film.

the lone ranger; why so much hate, this film was an awesome revival to one of my favorite childhood heroes.

man of steel; greatest action in a superman film, but that is the only good thing about it. I had to watch it twice just because I couldn't accept how bad it was. I'm sure most of you know just how hyped for this film I was, I bought 3 man of steel posters, 2 tea shirts, 4 plastic cups, and a mug. Lemme start from the least worst parts, to the most worst parts: the 3D made everything so blurry whenever the camera moved it hurt my eyes so bad, and when it was standing still there was always something that was supposed to be popping out at you, but it just ended up being super blurry, I watched it in 2 different movie theaters so it wasn't just the theater that had a bad tape of it. The whole film was all just a huge flashback, the whole movie felt like what would normally be that first few mins of the movie that set you up for the main premise of the film, but this had to do it the opposite, it ended right after the film started to enter what felt like the main premise of itself. All that you saw in the commercials of when he was a kid, is literally all you see in the film of it. The trailers and commercials were all focused on him being a kid mostly, so naturally like any human being with any logical thinking skills, I figured the movie would focus on him being a kid, but nope. literally all the footage of it they showed you in the commercials was all the footage they had in the film. Only the first 2 minutes of the film, seriously no, unacceptable. and lastly, it's not superman! if I wanted to see a more dramatic, baddass, dark superhero film I would go and watch a batman movie, sure I expect a bit of this in a superman movie, but he is still supposed to act like superman, nope not in this film. He was basically acting like a dumbed down batman in a superman suit. I love batman don't get me wrong, but I want superman to be superman and batman to be batman.

sadly I still haven't seen fifth estate because it wasn't in any theater within 3 hours of me and it has not been released on DVD yet, and I just haven't gotten around to watching grown ups 2 yet even though the first was like one of my favorite movies ever.

I'm sure I will remember some more movies I watched this year later, but for now that's all I can remember.

From Up on Poppy Hill: Technically, came out a year or two ago, but the theatrical run in the States was the first film I saw in 2013 (with the exception of seeing Django Unchained twice, though that was a 2012 release). This was a great Ghibli film, more intimate in scale than a lot of their larger films, but a very nice story nonetheless. A tearjerker at some points, even. Excellent film, highly recommend a watch.

Star Trek: Into Darkness: I heartily enjoyed this Star Trek film, unlike some of the haters out there. Though it wasn't incredibly shocking that they reused story elements again, Benedict Cumberbatch was pretty incredible as the villain and did an excellent job. It wasn't quite as good as the original reboot film, but I felt it was a worthy follow-up and am excited to see what they do next...though I guess it'll have to wait until Star Wars VII is done. :-/

Man of Steel: Not a very good movie. While I do enjoy some of the things this film did (everything with young Clark was great, though was pretty much ignored thematically for the rest of the film), there was so much wrong with it that it just didn't hold together. Also, the overindulgence in excess basically ruined the film. A big, stupid 45 minute ending where we see characters we don't care about move out of rubble while thousands of people in the city die and Superman doesn't save them, instead punching a big laser...ugh, it was just bad. I've seen it twice since I saw it in theaters...and I really don't feel like watching it again any time soon.

Monsters University: A return to form for Pixar. While I loved Brave and found it to be an excellent, praiseworthy film, it just didn't have the typical Pixar magic about it for whatever reason. MU was great from beginning to end, with laughs and heartwarming elements aplenty. They did the origin story of Mike and Sulley very, very well, and this makes me optimistic for their next release...and they deserve a year off, they've been coming out with releases every summer since 2006.

Despicable Me 2: It's hard for me to say whether or not I liked this film more than the first one. It was tremendously funny but had the sort of heart Pixar has had over the years. This blend of the slapstick/emphasis on humor that Dreamworks films tend to focus on with the great characters and heart of Pixar has led me to really enjoy both these Despicable Me films. To be honest, though, I've only seen these films once...I really need to change that so I can be a better judge. Still, quite a fun film overall.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire: Got me incredibly interested in this trilogy. I had not seen the first one (now remedied) before I saw this film, had not read any of the books, and knew little about anything it was about. However, this film was excellently acted, scored, and shot. The story is incredibly captivating and interesting. I've heard very mixed stuff about the last book, so I find it really interesting that they're making two films out of it. Should be interesting. This one is great, though, deserves all the praise it's gotten.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug: In many ways better than the first film, especially because it has a great pace to it. Everything feels a little more connected in this film than it did in The Unexpected Journey (though I also hold that film in pretty high regard). The creative liberties taken in this film, while I'm sure will be disappointing to some, were organic and fit the universe well enough to be acceptable and even laudable at times. Sure, there's a new character shoehorned in for there to be a woman among the central cast, but she adds an interesting tension that keeps the film engaging and will continue into the next film, I'm sure. Smaug himself did not disappoint, as Cumberbatch again showed through his voice (and mo-cap) why he has captivated audiences so.

I want to see the last two again, though Catching Fire is probably out of theaters already where I am back home. Definitely going to see the second Hobbit again, though. Film was excellent.

Films I Regret Missing:

The World's End - Seriously, really bummed I never got a chance to see this. Me and some friends had planned to go, but nothing ever worked. Sucks, but there you go.
Iron Man 3 - The only Iron Man film I've seen in theaters is the second one...it's an okay film, but certainly not of the same caliber as the first one.
Pacific Rim - I don't even need an explanation. I wish I had seen this. Never got the chance to. Bummed.
Thor: The Dark World - Though I haven't even seen the first Thor yet, so...whatever. Will see eventually.
Frozen - Thankfully, still in theaters. Will have to give it a watch over break.

Ds Games!

Haven't seen any of the movies that came out this year, as I wait to pick them up cheap on blu ray, the same way I wait for games to get cheap. There are a bunch I'm looking forward to purchasing in the future though, including the marvel movies, the hobbit, star trek, gravity and maybe pacific rim, still hearing a lot of mixed things about that one.

As far as hunger games goes, I'm still hesitant on this series as it seemed it was made for a younger audience. As someone that has read and enjoyed the more brutal battle royale, would hunger games be enjoyable, or feel like a teenagers version?

Iron Man 3-Better than the 2nd one but not as good as the 1st. Enjoyed it nonetheless.

Star Trek Into Darkness-Not as epic as the first but very enjoyable. This was actually my favorite film of the year.

Fast & Furious 6-Just some awesome brainless fun (RIP PW)

Monsters University-Not as epic as any of the early epic pixar films but still good

The Wolverine-Not my favorite x-men film but enjoyed it

Thor Dark World-It was ok, to me it was one of the worst marvel films in the cinematic universe since the incredible hulk. It wasn't bad and I somewhat enjoyed it, but not up to par as the others and I was disappointed.

The Hobbit Desolation of Smaug-It was good. As someone who read the book, there was a lot of extra stuff added to milk this book.

These are the films that I enjoyed. Ive watched some that I didn't like all that much like Man of Steel, The last stand, etc. Overall, out of the ones I watched, this year was a little weaker than past years but still a good year.

The only movie I actually went to see in theaters this year was Fast & Furious 6, but I'm gonna go to bat for that series because I genuinely enjoy it. And I'm not even a car guy.

What I really like about them is that they often recall the glory days of classic '80s action movies, but they manage to do it without being self-conscious imitations. They're exaggerated and over-the-top, but they're stylish and don't take themselves too seriously. They're filled with excellent action set pieces that are coherent and well thought out, and aren't just random scenes of violence and hyper-active editing (a la Michael Bay). Personally, I think 2 Fast 2 Furious feels the most like an '80s action movie, and that's why I enjoy it more than most fans.

Perhaps most important of all, though, is that they center around memorable and likeable characters. I think that's why Paul Walker's death has had as big an impact as it has. We got to know his character, Brian O'Connor, over the course of the series, and we already feel his absence. While each movie is a self-contained story, the characters have evolving lives from one to the next. Corny as it may be at times, I care about them, and that makes me care more about the situations they get into.

And yes, they're total bro movies, but they're good bro movies.

I've seen some good flicks this year, you guys mentioned a lot of them so I'll just mention the one that surprised me the most.

Sushi Girl

Watching Mark Hamill chew up scenery while Tony Todd just sat there being a bad ass... I don't know, I guess I wasn't expecting much and I ended up really enjoying it.

These aren't the droids we're looking for.

In no particular order:

Pacific Rim - I got so hyped for this film, and it lived up to all of my expectations. I absolutely loved it. Sure, it's not a smart sci-fi movie, but it's not supposed to be - if you're gonna complain about giant robots fighting giant monsters... what's wrong with you?

Man of Steel - I really enjoyed this new interpretation of Superman (who is one of the most boring superheroes in existence, in my opinion). The cast was great, as were the effects. I'm not really one of those people who constantly hate on Zack Snyder. Is it The Dark Knight? No, but I wasn't expecting it to be.

Star Trek into Darkness - I got really hyped for this one, mainly because of the way they teased Benedict Cumberbatch's character in the trailers, and it was pretty damned epic.

The Wolverine - I wasn't as super impressed by the film as some, but I still enjoyed it, especially Hugh Jackman's performance. My biggest complaint (other than the boss battle-esque ending) was how toned down the violence was - I really wanted to see Logan covered in blood. I'm looking forward to picking up the extended cut on Blu-ray in a few weeks.

The Wold's End - I was really, really, really looking forward to seeing this one when it hit theaters, but for some reason my theater never got it in. I picked it up on Blu-ray day one and absolutely loved it. I could really relate to Gary King (Simon Pegg's character), and all of the actors turned in excellent performances. It really was a standout comedy and is a suitable close to the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy.

The Place Beyond the Pines - This movie was really hyped up for me by people who had seen it in 2012 at a few film festivals, and, while it turned out a lot differently than what I was expecting, but it was a fantastic, touching film. It lived up to my expectations.

Oblivion - I know this movie got a lot hate, but I actually really enjoyed it. It was intriguing to me, and I loved the design aesthetic they had going for the film. It really reminded me of Mass Effect in some ways, which probably explains my adoration for the film.

Iron Man 3 - This is a love-hate movie for me. I loved watching Stark dealing with his post-traumatic stress disorder, and I loved seeing all of the Iron Man suits flying to the rescue at the end, but I really didn't like how easily Stark was knocked out of his armor time and time again, especially after all we've seen him go through in the film and the rest of the Marvel films he appears in. Also, the plot was very bouncy - they're covering mishaps up by blaming them on terrorists... but then they just decide to take over the country? Come on. Robert Downey, Jr. is great as usual.

From Up on Poppy Hill - Since CronoLink9 put it on his list, I felt I could too. The animation was beautiful (especially the backgrounds - oh my god, I'm a background nut), the story was great, and the characters were wonderful. The overall aesthetic of the film was incredibly charming and warm - I just loved the entire experience.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug - My most anticipated movie of the year, and, for the most part, it didn't disappoint too much. I'm a huge Tolkien fan, so my level of expectation was probably higher than most, but my film-loving side was alright with it. For more in depth thoughts on my opinions (positive and negative... but mostly negative - sorry! xD), watch my overly long and overly boring Thoughts & Ramblings video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQZKU0rgDbA
