Though I play and collect a wide variety of games, I often find myself coming back to systems from a certain generation in particular. This generation for me, is the sixth generation consoles. Why this is I think I mainly put down to the fact that it was during those years that I really started to pay attention to games and for me, this was the generation I bought (for myself) my first game console - the Gamecube. I had of course played games and had systems before, but the Gamecube was the first I bought myself. I went on to buy an Xbox and recieved a Gameboy Advance as a present, and the family bought a PS2 (it had a DVD player, what a revolution!). As I browse the internet, watch videos, read through magazines and the like looking for games, I am often drawn toward this generation in particular and some of my happiest gaming memories come from this era of gaming. In particular and again I don't really know why, my favourite systems from the era are the Nintendo ones - the Gamecube and the GBA - with the addition of some of my all-time favourite games coming from other systems (primarily the Xbox, I don't know how many times I've completed Fable...), and as such the Gamecube and GBA tend to be the focus of my collecting and, I suppose now, time spent playing 'retro' consoles. What is 'your' generation and why? Is it the one you grew up in? Thanks for reading ![]() |

Probably the third generation, I think it's more a case of rose-colored glasses than anything. I have so many fond memories of the NES and the time me and my brother/friends spent playing on that thing.

Ds Games!

This is a tough one. The ds is currently my favorite video game system, for which I own the most games and enjoy playing the most, however I owned an NES as my first console and have great memories playing it with my dad and friends. The Genesis also holds some great memories for me, as I often played it after school at a friends house, playing games like Sonic, Streets of Rage, X Men and Jungle Strike. My nostalgia for those two systems and the way videos games made me feel back then is strong enough to make me question which generation I feel myself tied to the most. I don't think I can choose. |

I agree with OP. i love my GC and I always seem to go back to them, and I love a ton of dreamcast games. The games were just more fun :). Best platforming, great RPG's and good amazing action/adventure games. I got a ton of GBA games also. |

Definitely N64's generation! Such great times going over to friends houses and a group of us staying up all night playing stuff like Mario 64, Mario Kart, GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, Pokemon Stadium, etc. Some of the best times I've ever had gaming since the majority of my friends now just play COD, Madden, or NBA 2K across town which is still fun but not the same.

What I really liked about the 6th gen compared to 5th (N64, PS1 etc.) was that though there were some amazing 3D games in the 5th gen, it was the 6th gen (for me) where they became truly amazing. Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, you'll hate me, but Mario Sunshine I loved... I love 2D and the SNES/Mega Drive games, but I love my GBA more... and it has the added benefit of having some amazing ports from the SNES it was labelled the handeld SNES after all

My favorite generation was the gamecube/ps2/xbox generation. I love me some NES and SNES, I owned those older consoles before the gamecube, but it was the gamecube's generation that was the most memorable. Playing Halo at friends' houses, shooting up the bots on NightFire with my cousin, Medal of Honor Rising Sun, Burnout 3, Metroid Prime, Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, Super Smash Bros Melee, Pikmin.... mothafockin Animal Crossing, oh shit I could not begin to tell you how much time I spent on that game... |

I think my main generation is the ps2/xbox/gamecube era. This is when I really got into gaming and some of my favourite games come from this time. I know someone has mentioned before but I think I probably completed Fable more times than any other game (Although Jade Empire, LOTR Return of the King and Onimusha Warlords give it a rund for its money). For me this generation was the last real social experience (i.e. playing in THE SAME ROOM as your friends). God I miss those times |

The frustration I find nowadays whenever I get a friend over and next to none of my current gen games have local multiplayer... it's dire! |

Yeah I know that is so frustrating. If my best mate is coming over I will always get the ps2 out. We will play either Timesplitters: Future Perfect or go through the co-op campaign on LOTR Return of the King. Both are so much fun and just packed full of nostalgia for me |

For me it probably has to be some time around the 8-16bit generations. I can't pin it down because there was so much going on around then that it would be a crime not to consider most of it. I loved there being so much platforms available around in the 80's-90's. Master System, C64, Amiga, Megadrive, Spectrum and DOS etc...they span across a couple of generations that i just couldn't pick between. All machines had their strengths and some were better at some types of games than others. C64 has some of the most amazing music I've ever heard in video games, the Amiga has some of the most interesting and impressive graphics and sound available at the time too. Both of which had massive underground indie support which is only just being relived today on PC. The Amiga also shared many properties with the Megadrive in terms of hardware/software and the vibe of it in general. Both had amazing arcade ports and really supported what was going on in Europe too, not just in America and Japan. The last few years have been phenomenal for games too, as i mentioned earlier there is this wonderful indie scene that is really showing the big developers what people really want from a game. They want enjoyable experiences with a lot of character and for an affordable price. No one want's to pay £40+ for a game very similar to another game, no matter how shiny the graphics are. Again it reminds me of why the home computers were really popular in Europe, selling great games at budget prices over selling games at £40+ on a machine that only uses cartridges. So in short, Love the 8-16bit timespan and what we are being offered now. |
