A question for Americans...

I'm a UK university student and one of my areas of interest is economics and politics.

Something I'm curious about in particular is the cost of some things in America as opposed to the UK - specifically certain (legal) drugs and fuel for your car!

If any of you from the US have a minute, all I'd like to know is:

What is your typical pain killer you'd use for things like headaches? - in the UK we have things like Asprin and what I usually use is Paracetamol, though from what I'm aware the US don't use Paracetamol or most likely it has a different name...

What is the price of a typical pain killer (please include how many you'd get in the box etc.)

How much does a gallon of petrol (gasoline?) cost currently in the US? - at the time of writing (18th December 2013) a US gallon of petrol in the UK would cost about $8 if my calculations are right... (it's about 130 pence per litre which is how we measure it)

I'm only using any information provided for my own curiosity, so please let me know :)

Acitaminophen is the same thing I think. I usually get 500 capsules at 500mg for $15-20ish I think at Costco. Gas depends on where you live really. It's $3.37 a gallon by me.

There are four major generalized over the counter pain meds people use; acetaminophen (Tylenol, Paracetamol), naproxen sodium (Aleve, Naprelan), aspirin, and ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin). All but acetaminophen NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory).

Gas is about $3.23 a gallon here in Michigan.

In New York gas hasn't been that low all year. You'll find gas prices vary a bit all over the US, not sure if it's the same in the UK, but I'm sure the prices peak during the summer over there the same way they do here. I just paid $3.69 a gallon for gas, at one of the cheapest places around.

Fuel prices do fluctuate across the country and at different times of year, but it seems like we're the opposite. I don't notice much difference in the price of petrol but diesel climbs a bit during winter because quite a lot of heating systems run off diesel.

The prices you've said for your over the counter medication are very different... a pack of paracetamol is usually less than 50p ($0.82) and ibruprohen would be less than £2 ($3.27)

Fuel prices over here are very high as you can tell, think they tend to be higher on continental Europe though worryingly...

I use Excedrin which is Acetaminophen, Aspirin and Caffeine mixture for head aches. Nothing else works for me.

Pain medication prices can vary depending on where you get them. Convenience/Drug stores such as CVS and Walgreens are typically higher than a "warehouse" type store such as Wal mart or Costco. Also buying "branded" products is more expensive than buying "generic equivalents". Generics will typically just have the compound listed with names such as equate. I'm not sure if you have these in the UK. The link below has linkes to price listings of pain medication (Tylenol/Advil/Excedrin etc) from one of the larger retailers.

It does vary dependent on store and brand. We don't have huge stores like Wal Mart in the UK that seemingly sell everything, but Wal Mart owns a big supermarket chain in the UK called Asda. Stores like Asda are about as close as we get to 'warehouse' stores (we have stuff like Costco etc., and stores like Asda seem to be heading toward a sort of Wal Mart setting, you can buy quite a lot in them) and do sell their own brand products which tend to be dirt cheap... to be honest I'm happy to be own-brand medication for stuff like that as it seems to be the same stuff in the capsule anyway!

They do have the same active ingredients and can appear to be the same. The difference can lie in the inactive ingredients. Some can be coated in a sugar or other substance that may increase the rate at which the drug absorbs into the body, plus their concentrations of the active ingredient may be different. Since the generics compete on price they may forgo substances like these to give you a no frills pill. Bottom line is that if it works for you and its cheaper then by all means use it. I would argue that they are not the same and results can be highly individual.

Canada here:

Gas was $1.02/L the last time I filled up and I find it crazy that you pay almost double for fuel in the UK.

Yeah prices are crazy... I think most of it is tax but I'm not entirely sure. It costs me about £70 ($115US; $122CAN) to fill up my car which I do maybe every two weeks driving about 350 miles on a tank :(

Thinking of cars; how are insurance prices in North America? A big problem in the UK just now is how much young guys are expected to pay for car insurance which can typically exceed the value of the car quite easily. For example when I first passed my test a £1,000 ($1643) car with a tiny engine would cost upwards of £1,700 ($2800) to insure... is this the same over seas?

I guess again it may depend on your state due to the driving age which I know changes - here in the UK you can drive a car at 17 and small-engined motorbikes at 16

American here! :P

Standard gas is about $3.10-$3.40 here. It fluctuates that much over a period of a month. My car insurance, as a 24 year old, is between $60-80 a month, I don't remember specifically.

As another Brit I do feel like we do get done over slightly on prices. Petrol (or gas to our colonial cousins) is just ridiculous, like has been said £70+ to fill up my car and I do that fairly regularly. My insurance (as a 23 year old) is £900 on a 2ltr Audi with 2 years no claims.

I always here that we get paid a lot more in the UK. The average salary for a UK male is £31,683 ($51,896), does anyone know how that compares to you guys in America? By the looks of things we pay about 2.3x what you guys do for fuel, but I doubt that is consistent across everything
