As the title says what Game(s) have you picked up on a whim and enjoyed the hell out of?

I would have to say Bioshock back when it came out back in August '07

I fell in love with the story and all the characters.

I picked up The Last Express for super cheap last year during a summer sale on GOG.com, and it ended up being one of the best adventure games I've ever played. Highly recommended if you're looking for a unique twist on classic adventures.

Tales of Symphonia. I picked it and Sudeki on XBOX up because I wanted to play some rpgs and they were cheap. Needless to say, I played for Sudeki for 10 minutes didn't like it and popped in Tales and it turned out to be one of my favorite gamecube games ever.

Yeah, it's a cracking game. I bought it as it qas one of the few games the local toy store stil had for the NES, I was not disappointed!

Got Thunder Wolves on steam a little while back and really liked that. Reminded me so much why there should ve another Strike game made. Will never happen though. :(

pretty much any game I bought before 2010, and golden sun dark dawn. I usually do extensive research on any game I buy before I buy it.

As soon as I saw this topic coincidentally enough, the first game I thought of was Locks Quest. Much more to that game than I ever expected. Another one would be Might and Magic Clash of Heroes, as described in the community poll tournament. Didn't know anything about it other than what the box tells you and found it a ton of fun and really addicting. It;s always a great feeling to take a chance and be rewarded.

I bought Conan for the PS3 for 2 dollars at EB games and it was surprisingly fun. Also I bought Vanquish just because it was Platinum Games who developed it and ended up adoring it!

Definitely Metro 2033. That game is so immersive and great, and I never would have tried it without play-asia selling it for $30 the week after it came out. Gave it a shot and now it's one of my favorites series to come out of this gen. Very talented developer and the sequel is even better!

The Witcher and it ended up becoming my favorite game of all time. I heard about this great PC RPG from 2007, but I didn't know anything about it. When I built my gaming PC I was looking for something to play and show off my hardware. I just decided to get it one day after I played the standard high end FPS games and I couldn't believe how much I loved it.

long time ago, I was in a gamestop with money to spend in my pocket. after an hour of pacing back and forth, looking at the same games, I was finding nothing. then my mother comes in the store (long time ago) and tells me to hurry up. then I see this game with a cool looking cover and I was like that's the game I am getting. Gamestop was doing some promotion at the time so I got this $60 game for like $30. the game was Fallout 3 GOTY.
HIT ME UP ON XBOX LIVE.
AWWWW SHIT!!!

I really enjoyed Alpha Protocol as well. But it took me 3 times trying to play this game before it stuck. The first time I played it I couldn't get over the fact that when you shot at someone sometimes you would miss. Because of the RPG elements you have to put more points into your aim before you're deadly. I quit playing and months later I tried playing again and I was really turned off by the boring environment. The first area is a middle eastern type of setting and it's all brown. I quit playing again.

It wasn't until the 3rd time I played it and got past the first area that I enjoyed it. There are some really off-beat characters and I enjoyed the rpg aspects of the game and the fact that they put a time limit on how long you have to respond using the dialog wheel. You have to make decisions quickly so you can't just sit there all day thinking about what you're going to say. It's an underrated game if you can just get past the first unappealing area.

I went for the stealth route so the weapons never bother me.
And yeah the first area is really boring but after that its a blast.

Title basically sums up the game in its entirety...and it's absolute garbage. TURRIBLE! Avoid at ALL costs. I wish I could go back and talk some sense into my younger self...worst spending of my allowance possibly of all time :(

Didn't quite read the whole thread title. Bought on a whim, but hated lol...oh, and 400 posts! :D

Singularity and F.E.A.R. 2. I was at a point where I was sick of first-person shooters, but these two games caught my eye and I decided to buy them sight-unseen when they went on sale. I am very glad I did. Neither game reinvents the wheel in terms of FPS gameplay or mechanics, but they are part of a dying breed - quality, single-player shooters that are more concerned with atmosphere and storytelling than cinematic firefights and cookie cutter multiplayer modes. Whenever I'm asked what overlooked games to seek out, those often get mentioned.

The other, which may sound odd at first, is The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. I say this because I had resolved not to buy the game after not liking Oblivion, but the peer pressure of my friends loving it compelled me to go out and spend $60 on it. I'm pretty sure I was drunk at the time. I sat down one night and decided to start playing, and the first 30 minutes or so were unexciting, but somewhere along the way I got hooked and kept playing for hours. It then struck me that this game is fantastic and I absolutely love it. Almost 200 hours later, and currently in my second playthrough, the feeling has stuck. Lesson learned: Be open to new experiences, even is past experiences sometimes dissuade you from venturing into known territory with certain games.

I still need to get Singularity since I've heard alot of comparisons to Bioshock and I'm also a big fan of story driven FPS games.

I was really impressed with Xmen Origins Wolverine. I kind of just wanted a Hack n Slash to play and it was cheap used and fit the bill so I picked it up and it was way better than I ever thought a comic or movie licensed game would ever be. It was up there with Dante's Inferno for me, which I considered a very good Hack N Slash. Maybe it was just how I was feeling that week, but I swear it was a really fun game.
