How are your experiences at conventions? Met any really cool people? With Magfest happening and a whole bunch of them happening right now, I thought it would be a good idea to make a thread. I just went to an anime convention near where I live called sac anime, and i got a bunch of gaming merch and anime merch. I got to try out the retron 5, see a bunch of cool cosplays, see Vic Mignogna (best panel ever), and tommorow I'm hopefully going to get vic's and Charles martinet's signatures.

I've been to PAX Prime the past two years. Damn good times! Everyone is really friendly and it's fun chatting with developers and cosplayers. Plus you have Game Works and numerous bars and restaurants in walking distance from the convention so everything there just works out perfectly! Love Seattle and PAX.

I met some of the GiantBomb crew (Vinny, Drew, Jeff, and Ryan) randomly at Dicks a few blocks from the convention but aside from that no one I really recognize. Still haven't seen any of the AGG crew there! lol.

Almost every year, I make it a point to attend the Toronto FanExpo, which is similar to other events like Comic Con. While gaming is one component, it's really a celebration of all things nerdy. Horror, sci-fi, comic books and anime are all represented, and they have a selection of celebrities visiting each year, doing panels and signing autographs. In addition to the attractions, there are hundreds of vendors selling all kinds of wares. Nerdy t-shirts, games, comics, books, clothes, trinkets and other doodads are all things I like to pick up when I go.

I love that place, I saw a lot of great (well, that's debatable I suppose haha) movies there and met a ton of awesome people. I still have some pictures around here somewhere that showcase some of those great cosplayers.

The movies part is perhaps my favorite. They have booths for independent studios and distibutors set up and they market all kinds of indie horror movies, of varying degrees of quality. I always make it a point to swign by the Troma table and see what they have on offer.

In terms of celebrities, I've met a few there. Being a big horror fan, meeting Robert Englund was definitely the best of the lot. Others I have met include Heather Langenkamp (Nightmare on Elm Street), Tom Savini, William Forsythe (Halloween remake), Tony Todd (Candyman) and Doug Bradley (Pinhead from Hellraiser.) I also got to meet John Barrowman, and he was a class act.

The only downside of these conventions - you spend WAY too much money. All the merchandise and impulse purchases will empty your wallet in short order.

Yeah, if you're a horror fan you NEED to go once. One of the movies I had signed was Texas Chainsaw Massacre and it was by accident, I ended up sitting down next to Tobe Hooper and talking to him, he didn't have a booth set up at the time (he may have been taking a break) and he offered to sign the movie. Then Lloyd Kaufman came over followed by a guy who showed all three of us a magic trick. It was odd. As far as class acts go Sid Haig was awesome and Henry Winkler was very friendly to the fans in line waiting for him. It's settled, I'm going again next year (and maybe even this year if I can pull it all together in time...).

Go to two conventions this year: Portland Retro Gaming Expo & PAX Prime in Seattle. Both are very different and yet worth your time. You'll meet tons of great people, eat amazing food and wish you could do it all again next year :)

Hell I went to the Toronto Fan Expo last year and easily blew $250 (that does include beer). If I didn't hold back at all I could have spent a good $500 just on random crap that I wanted. So note to self bring moar money next year.

I've gone to a couple of fur cons throughout the years. One in SeaTac, and I been up to Vancouver BC a couple of times. They're not bad. Can't say I met a lot of people due to my shyness, but I enjoy them.
