I have a tough time beating games...

As the topic title suggests, I have a tough time going through, and trying to beat games. I don't know why, I just have a severely hard time doing it. I get distracted with other games, and wind up not returning to certain ones after a long time. What are some good ways to fix this, and actually play through my games in full that you all could recommend?

I also have this problem, I get sidetracked alot especially with rpgs. I find that it helps to focus on one console; Say focusing on the DS for a week or two and then switch it up. ( I tend to switch between games alot but generally only play one or two on a single console at a time.)

But really my advice should be taken lightly since my back log is currently at...132...135...136 (damn you steam sales).

I'd be interested in what Aero has to say because if i remember correctly he also had a massive backlog that he somehow managed to whittle down considerably.

I should also mention that with school and my job, I don't have as much time for gaming like I used to.

Ds Games!

What works for me is being incredibly strict with myself. I'm only ever playing one game on ds and one game on 3ds at any given time, and will not start another until they're beaten. Another thing to do is space out your rpgs. After beating an rpg, I generally play 3-5 non rpg type games before I delve back into any type of game thats going to take a long time to beat. If you can manage to be strict and stick to one game, you'll find it's not too bad once you get used to it. I do the same thing with buying games, being strict about making sure they're at a specific price drop or less before I purchase, this way I don't just buy every game I want as soon as I see it.

I'm gonna have to do something similar to this then. I have so many games, and I honestly just need to beat them all.

I do this too much always switch, my backlog is huge, over a 100 probably, I'm just not going to buy any more games, until I finish what I have, is enough good titles.

I also have the theory of breaking up RPG's with shorter action/shootem up/survival horror/platformers in the middle. That way I find stories don't run together and it keeps me from getting burnt out on the second or third RPG in a row. Also I go with the rule of 1 gamer per console at any given time. Really want to play Tomb Raider? I better beat Borderlands then...

Hope that helps.

For me, video games are like books and TV shows. I'm quick and eager to pick them up, but I'm just as quick to put them back down. It's either ADD or I get bored quickly, likely a combination of both, and it often means that I have a ton of games that I've only played half of. RPGs tend to suffer the worst with me, as I rarely finish them due to their length and complexity. However, when a game hits me the right way, at the right time, I have no problem finishing it. I have to be in the mood, I guess.

I have problems finishing games on consoles and PC, i have to really dedicate my time to those when i'm at home, but with portables i can play wherever and are just more convienent. My backlog is very skewed twords consoles, but i think i'll just buy less console & PC games from now on.

I have the same problem. I probably beat 1/3-1/2 of games I start playing these days. Don't really know the solution besides kicking yourself in the ass, but I have also realized that forcing yourself to enjoy something isn't the best route. We all have limited gaming time, so use it wisely.

a year and a 4 months, and 500, but it will probably be 600 by the time it is 2 years :D

and you are right, but still I barely play more than a few hours of some most of my games, or I play them once (even though that once might be a long once) and never play them again.

I'll have to take some of these tips into consideration. Thanks guys!

Also, another question since it somewhat has to do with this: How do you all keep track of your backlog?

Pretty sure I've said this before, but I am of the belief that Zaven and Thanous are the same person. Or at the very least they are twins that were seperated at birth in an evil plot to drive me mad.

As far as keeping track of my back log goes.

I think it's a pretty common thing. If something doesn't grab me after the first couple hours I probably won't play much more of it. Though it doesn't mean I'll steamroll through games I DO get in to either... I'll put a LOT of time in to something I like, but it will be over a long period. I actually don't remember the last time I just sat down over a whole day and finished a modern AAA game start to finish, there and then. For example, I've been playing Bioshock Infinite since Jan 1st, and at a guess I'm just over two thirds of the way through (planning to get it done this weekend, not much time left to put in to it I don't think).

I don't know if that's me wanting to prolong something I am really enjoying, if it's the fact that i've been putting time in to Civ V (screw Inca, frsrs) and FFXIV, or both. I know that both of those reasons have been factors in the past. But the long and short of it; if you really want to get through something and you think it's worth your time, you will probably find yourself making the time :)

Agreed! I have a bunch of games that are only 6 hours long that I have yet to beat, but I've put in 45 hours into Assassins Creed Black Flag and it's the only game I've really played the last three weeks. I don't really like forcing myself to complete one game before moving onto another. If the game is your cup of tea and worth your time you'll keep powering through with little effort :)

Good choice on Sleeping Dogs!! That game is so great :D

Also if you happen to have Sleeping Dogs on Xbox 360 all of the DLC is 50% off right now!

Yeah, I have a hard time beating most of the games I have. Either I lose motivation, get bored or distracted when a new game comes out. Or I have no time. It sucks... :-/
