Hey guys! I have been a total hater of reading books my entire life... I honestly think this is due to the fact that my school forced that reading program "accelerated reader" upon me at a young age. I honestly think I would have learned to like reading a lot more as I got older if I wasn't forced to read as a child.

Well... I have had Stephen King's IT next to my bed for a few years now. I just have never had the motivation to read it as it is quite thick... Well I think I need to change my view on reading. I just turned 26 and i figure I should start on some of the books I have around the house. Why not start with IT? I am a big time horror fan and have been a fan of the Stephen King movies throughout the years so I was wondering if there are any other stories I should check out.

Let me know if you have any suggestions!

Well you can start out with these...

seriously though, my favorite book ever is The Stand. My other top recommendations are Salem's lot, Firestarter, Pet Semetary, Thinner, and The Talisman. Some of his short story books, Night Shift, Different Seasons, Skeleton Crew and several others are all amazing as well. If you want a weird epic series, you can't go wrong with The Dark Tower series... all great stuff...

Oh yeah... If you can't tell, I'm a Stephen King fan...

Pet Sematary is my personal favorite of his, which is an unconventional choice given the wealth of great books he's written. For some reason, this book scared me more than the others, and the idea of how an idyllic family's life can be torn apart by supernatural forces coming from an Indian burial ground struck a cord with me. I remember seeing the movie in 1990, when I was 10 years old, and it scared the living crap out of me. That, and seeing animals die deeply upset me, but I've since overcome that. It's a great book that kept me enthralled throughout.

I've read quite a bit of Stephen King, but my personal favorite is without a doubt Salem's Lot. Been meaning to see the movie for years, but just haven't gotten around to it. But yes, definitely one you'll want to look into!

I think that is my second favorite after The Stand.

Everyone recommends The Stand, always. It's a good indication of what Stephen King is about.

A quick funny story involving Stephen King... In the 90's during SK's height in popularity, my dad looked EXACTLY like him. I mean he could have been his twin. He looked so much like him that people would actually follow us when we would go places and ask my dad for his autograph. It was pretty hilarious to see.

It is long... it is really long... but it is incredibly worth it. It's dystopian-ish, and more good vs. evil than it is horror, but a lot of his books fall into a more psychological horror or sci-fi/fantasy category. Your thread has gotten me back into my Stephen King collection. I've never read IT before and it was the next one on my list so I'm hitting that one up. I'm reading all of his books mostly in the order that he wrote them. I've read almost everything up to IT so far.

Strip the Flesh, salt the wound!

Here's one that hasn't been recommended yet...Misery. It was actually the first Stephen King book I've read and I loved it.
