So these are two series that I would personally love to get into but quite honestly just don't have the faintest idea where to start. For Tales of: -Are the story lines continuous or is it more along the lines of Final Fantasy? -Where should I start? Is it worth it to go all the way back to the beginning or should I just start with something like Xillia? Atelier: -I don't even know where to start, There are so many games and I can't pronounce half of their titles. Any input would be appreciated; I know there are alot of hardcore rpg fans lurking around these parts. |

I am not very familiar with the Atelier games, so you'll have to rely on someone else to answer your queries with that one. As for the Tales of series, it's more in the realm of Final Fantasy in that they're all, for the most part, not related to one another. Like some of the Final Fantasy sequels (The After Years, X-2, XIII-2, etc.), there is a bit more tying some of them together. For example, Tales of Symphonia is a loosely-related prequel to Tales of Phantasia, while Dawn of the New World is the sequel to Symphonia. As for other cases, there is going to be a Tales of Xillia 2, and I think one of the earlier games got a direct sequel which never came out here, that being Tales of Destiny 2. To add to the confusion, the US port of Tales of Eternia was named Tales of Destiny II due to some licensing issues, even though it had no relation to the original Tales of Destiny or its eventual sequel. As to where you should start: I would suggest Tales of Symphonia. While the battle system has since been improved through multiple iterations, it's a good starting point. The new Symphonia HD collection that comes out next month would be a great place to start playing it unless you can find the Gamecube version somewhere cheap first. Other highlights of the franchise for me have been Abyss and Vesperia, which both can be found at modest prices. While I own Xillia, I don't have a PS3 to play it on yet, and I also haven't gotten the chance to try out Legendia (which apparently isn't all that good), Graces (which I've wanted to play since it was Wii exclusive in Japan), or some of the earlier ones. It's a very enjoyable series all in all, I find. Edited by CronoLink9, Jan 20 2014, 02:53 AM.

ok I am a huge fan of the atelier series, so depending on which system you want to play on check these out: all right so if you want to play on modern (blah I guess it is last) generation, there are many good options, their is the arland series and the chronology of which you play them doesn't really matter, you won't really be confused at all with the story so if you wish to take this route, definitely play totori first (also on vita :kirbyhappy:). but if you do wish to go in chronological order that would be recommended. and for last last generation I would recommend atelier iris, I have only played the first in the series but it is pretty fun so check that out. avoid the mana khemia games though they are not nearly as good as the other games and not much worth your time, in my honest opinion. again though my first was totori and that got me wanting to play other games in the series as well, so that would probably be the best place to get an introduction to the series. or since the second game in the dust series is coming out soon you might wanna play ayesha, also a fun one. and if you realllllyyy want to play a DS game check out annie, it's alright but save it for later. |

I'm on the same bandwagon. Haven't played either of the series so info would be nice. I'm probably going to pick up xillia because of the sale. |

The Atelier Series is all about alchemy! You will have to find and farm for materials to create weapons, armor and stuff yourself. The games are broken down into different series depending on where the protagonist is from. So If you start a game I would start with the first game in that series. Atelier Rorona: The Alchemist of Arland would be the first game in the Arland series Atelier Ayesha: The Alchemist of Dusk is the first one in the Dusk series I think the Mana Khemia games are just as good personalty. They are different because of how your in a school and the game is broken into chapters and these games focus heavily on alchemy even more so than the Atelier Series. Overall I enjoy the games and if you like turn based RPG's that's heavy on creating and upgrading your stuff you more than likely will enjoy them. The series has been very popular in Japan with over 15 games in the main series and a bunch of side games as well. |

Well, the tales of series is the more traditional and higher regarded of the two. I would really recommended waiting for Tales of Symphonia Chronicles. I think that would be a perfect starting point of the series. You can see where the 3d games all started, but at the same time enjoy the modern touch ups. |

I 2nd everything Majin just said but I would say in addition to the PS3 series get the 'Iris' trilogy on PS2 and for sure get Mana Khemia 1 & 2 as well. The most controversial NIS series that continues from PS2-PS3 is Ar Tonelico but I think they are equally as entertaining. I just love ALL the NIS series. They are so light hearted and use almost self deprecating humor to make fun of themselves and the RPG genre and gaming industry as a whole but are in fact really great games to boot. It's all about having a good time. Atelier, Ar Tonelico, Mana Khemia, Disgaea and the Sidequels Makai Kingdom/Phantom Brave are all really really top notch stuff imho. |

I'm not well versed in either series, but I did love what I played of Tales of Vesperia and it's only $4.94 on Xbox Live Games on Demand. Steal of a deal! |

Tales of games play a lot like the star ocean games for good reason as iirc the original tales deus left to start tri ace. The alchemy games are good, I have all the ps3 ones and a few ps2, but they are more time sinks than the tales games and not for everyone. The dusk series is a good start if you are into pretty art style. Also don't forget to try out eternal sonata. Folklore might also be something to look into. i personally think the atelier series is awful, so understand that it's most definitely a niche series and not for everyone. tales on the other hand is far more accessible and enjoyable in my opinion. i would begin with tales of graces f or with symphonia. if youd like to try the 2d games first, i say begin with tales of destiny (first one i played) as that one really started my love for the series. |

Atelier series sure is not for everyone. it's lighthearted, funny, cute and straightforward, but I guess that's why I like it. Tales series however is more open to a variety of audience. it has its cute moments but also has its serious and dark moments. depends on the system, but I think Abyss, Vesperia and Eternia are good ones to start with. Graces f is too lighthearted IMO. Haven't played Xillia yet, so can't comment on that. waiting for Xillia 2 so I can have a Xillia marathon. |
